Please everyone don't visit the new Rwanda thread. It's too depressing for words.

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 19:27

At any conceivable cost

Including pulling out of the ECHR

Boris Johnson asked whether it may be necessary to pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights to restrict legal challenges to the Rwanda policy, replies: 'Will it be necessary to change some laws as we go along? It may very well be'

…and I’m back at his cousins open letter posted earlier experiencing something akin to mourning I think. Much like how I felt the morning after the brexit ref.

ECHR is now involved with the Rwanda flight

I heard Johnson the news (radio) talking about doing this as have to deter the people traffickers.

It just astounds me they think this is the answer.

It's obvious they actually beyond getting their dollar - hence why they send families on a risky death boat across the channel.

They won't stop sending them because they don't care what happens once they have their dosh. Surely money would be better spent on dealing with the cause rather than on a solution on sending empty planes to Rwanda.

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 19:57

Wow, not that it will stop him or the rags.

NEW: Bar Council/Law Society issues statement on PM's Rwanda comments: "The Bar Council and Law Society of England and Wales together call on the Prime Minister to stop attacks on legal professionals who are simply doing their jobs."

I know, right?

Did anyone see Tom Peck's piece on Liz Truss? I think it's fair to say he's not a fan:-

Peregrina · 14/06/2022 20:28

I commented on the Brexit mega thread so won't repeat myself here. But the ECHR was promoted by Churchill. Johnson is normally never slow to pretend to be Churchill. But he won't be doing so this time.

This will be music to the ERGs ears because they are desperate to leave the ECHR. They consider themselves a finer clay than the rest of us. I would not be too sorry if when they have completely destroyed human rights and eventually someone comes for them, that there will no-one to speak up for them. It would be justice, or karma.

Notonthestairs · 14/06/2022 20:41

"There is a race to the wire tonight over the remaining asylum seekers still scheduled to be deported from the UK to Rwanda at 10:30pm.

European Court has already pulled two off the plane, leaving 5. We understand a judge is examining the remaining cases. They have 2 hours left."

You can just see the anti human rights headlines being written tonight

"We could have the ridiculous situation of the govt simultaneously trying to rip up the NI protocol allegedly to protect the Good Friday Agreement, while champing at the bit to leave the ECHR thus jeopardising the Good Friday Agreement"

twitter.com/joeltaylorhack/status/1536790653652422661?s=21&t=E3TfuWH6D1txJm65D5_BJw

David Allen Green explains that the GFA expressly requires the EHCR to be directly enforceable in NI.

It makes absolutely no sense until you remember this is all about appeasing the ERG charlatans and keep Johnson in power. It's not a muddle, it's pulling at random levers and not caring at the consequences.

Notonthestairs · 14/06/2022 21:07

Just looked at the Brexit mega thread and realised I am repeating posts Blush

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 21:16

The two threads are starting to overlap. Repeating posts is fine as not everyone on here reads the brexit one and vice versa.

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2022 21:22

Depressingly, Rwanda threads are also overlapping. I need to go somewhere for a bit of a cry in the corner.

Notonthestairs · 14/06/2022 21:24

I suppose Brexit was nothing more than a power grab for Johnson. A means to an end. Now he's on a sticky wicket he has no option but to return to Brexit to stoke up some more fires and distract from the lack of meaningful long term policies. Brexit issues prove useful.
Gah.

I said this on MN prior to the referendum. Brexit was nothing more than a power grab.

There were very few people who clocked it then, and I don't think there are significantly more who get it now.

Notonthestairs · 14/06/2022 21:41

I don't understand how Johnson became the Brexit touchstone. He's no more a Brexit believer than he is a liberal. It's whatever serves a purpose.

Truss likewise.

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 21:58

BREAKING: ECHR has stopped two more people being sent to Rwanda.

Two more have had their tickets cancelled.

We are down to one on the flight.

tobee · 14/06/2022 22:01

Boris Johnson took the leave side purely to be the darling of the Tory party, expecting remain to narrowly win the referendum and then swoop in as leader when the debate didn't go away. He never expected to be leader/pm and actually have to enact Brexit, is that right? If he even looked that far. Brexit obviously was going to be a shit show. Nobody in their right mind would want to preside over that. Certainly hasn't sorted the division in the Tory party around the country. Which would hilarious if we weren't all going to be fucked as well.

tobee · 14/06/2022 22:02
  • darling of the Tory party as David Cameron said.
