Starmer has improved a lot. He’s got the measure of Johnson now, sounds less like a nitpicking lawyer though still asking the right detailed questions, and is displaying nice touches of humour.

I couldn't watch it but just saw this clip of Keir Starmer's last question
twitter.com/LittleGravitas/status/1534519677526888449?t=9gsCiGSurvsK94k2oTfvjw&s=19

Powerful stuff, well done Keir, and I am sorry for the suffering of those he mentioned; genuinely devastating.

It hit home for me because of where we live re ambulances
My NDN had to call one, it didn't come

I think Starmer expresses well just how ridiculous Johnson is. Johnson's answers are just pathetic.

carefullycourageous · 08/06/2022 15:53

I'm catching up on PMQs now - the question from Tulip Siddiq about the 13 year old sent back to Ukraine was actually distressing.

I can not actually describe how much I hate this government, they are simply rotten.

LBC yesterday recognised that BJ is a good orator, today he’s full of splutters and stutterings.

He’s rattled.

The thing is he isn't. I don't think he ever has been. It's part of the public schoolboy mythologisation. He's a dreadful public speaker.

This is a particular sore point for me as someone just informed a family member won’t be cremated for four weeks due to a backlog .

The causes are pretty clear to me, Brexits effect on staffing and lack of clear leadership throughout the peak of the pandemic whether indecisiveness on when to call for lockdown (January 2021 in particular), the ‘unexpected’ demand for tests on schools return in September 2020 or the utterly ridiculous marketing con of ‘save Christmas’.

‘Save the NHS’, we didn’t save anything, just pushed the problems up the road and shockingly the tories still have no plan to deal with it. Apparently not even privatisation. We don’t have a healthcare system to sell off even if it’s an option.

Cornettoninja · 08/06/2022 16:21

I’d agree he’s never really said anything of substance but I also agree with the conversation I heard which concluded that, rather shallowly, the tone of his actual voice and accent does carry an air of authority and commands people listen. He’s definitely got something KS doesn’t, even though KS was a great prosecutor it doesn’t carry over as well to politics where people tend to listen for sound bites rather than details.

Piggywaspushed · 08/06/2022 16:28

I genuinely can't agree with this. The man can't finish a sentence. I lose patience with him the minute he starts one. Starmer is clear and direct. Sturgeon actually beats both of them hands down for public speaking. (I used to compete against her as a teenager... she always bloody won)

Cornettoninja · 08/06/2022 16:35

@Piggywaspushed I get that Grin

I can’t stand his umming and ahhing but clearly this wasn’t an issue for him to talk his way into no. 10.

I've just caught up. The way he handled this question was frankly disgusting. There was no empathy, or even any attempt at saying how he was going to fix the system other than Patel would deal with it.
She was shaking her head as if to say, nope, I'm doing fuck all about this

It's truly sickening.

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2022 16:50

Cornetto yes it's very delayed.

We got mums death certificate 4 days after she died (it was the weekend in tween though). Then it was 9 days before the death could be registered. She cremated tomorrow 3 weeks after she died.
And because she does of cancer there was no delay over cause of death etc.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2022 16:50

The only soundbite I'd like to hear from Sir Keir Starmer is ' get Boris out '
Won't be for a while yet.

Roussette · 08/06/2022 16:55

I find that Johnson plays to the audience, he leans on to the despatch box and peers at his adoring crowd (actually.... not quite so adoring now that 148 voted against him) and if you really listen to what he says, it just has no substance. He attacks Labour, makes up shit, insults Starmer, throws in a few well worn phrases and that's it.

There are good orators in the HoC but - to me - he isn't one of them. Yvette Cooper is a star with facts and figures, David Lammy speaks with such passion,
I think KS beats BJ hands down and has flashes of brilliance. I remember him in January after the first stage of partygate. Tugendhat has given good speeches. But not Boris to my mind.

And if an ill or injured person does manage to get to A&E -

170 patients in this A&E, waiting time of 7.5hrs to see a doctor:

I suspect Patel would prefer to be sending Ukrainian refugees to Rwanda too.

I found this video message to Boris Johnson very moving:

borntobequiet · 08/06/2022 17:18

Really?

I think so.

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2022 17:27

Patel has been very quiet of late. Times listed Patel as most likely to be removed in a cabinet reshuffle. I did wonder whether he'd move Wallace just because he seems very popular.

I see Baroness Morrissey has jumped before she could be sacked as non exec director at the Foreign office. She called Johnson a liability and said he was in the wrong job (I'm struggling to think of the right job given his past).

I hope all goes well tomorrow Itsgettingweird.

tobee · 08/06/2022 17:33

Unfortunately, the general electorate don't give a monkeys about Johnson's ability to finish a sentence at PMQ or whether Starmer has forensic precision in his questions in the House. Too many of them still think Johnson is great because he made them laugh with his shit schtick on HIGNFY or an a zip wire. Further comparisons to Trump and The Apprentice.

I know this has been said many times on these boards but it's just so arghhhhhhhhhhhh!

Cornettoninja · 08/06/2022 17:39

I hope your mums funeral goes well @itsgettingweird , I’ll be thinking of you Flowers

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2022 17:42

Listening to PMQs or anything more than a 20 second clip on the news is quite niche. I'm not sure it has much of an impact on most people.

And yes as ridiculous as it sounds HIGNFY will have a greater impact. Heaven help us.
