Why is the USA banning abortion?

516 replies

MindPalace · 08/04/2022 13:03

It is absolutely horrifying that 21-26 US states are actively considering outlawing abortion. There are no exemptions for rape or incest in many of the proposals.

I see lots of news articles on this eg this one

amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/apr/08/oklahomas-move-to-ban-abortions-is-a-prelude-of-america-without-roe-v-wade

But I can’t find one setting out the reasons why. Why on earth would they want to set back hard-won women’s rights?

And Poland as well. It’s quite scary.

Sorry if there is another recent thread on this btw.

@Viviennemary

I think the legal time limit needs to be reduced. Except in the most serious of medical cases. Not just because somebody has changed their mind. Hardly any countries allow abortion for any reason up to 24 weeks. Its the UK who is out of step on this issue.
Why is it okay for medical reasons but not for other reasons? Its the same procedure either way.

Oh hi, Viviennemary. We've been expecting you.
Hospedia · 09/04/2022 18:22

Only 1% of abortions take place after 20wks and almost all of that 1% are done under Cat E (basically TMFR). 0.1% take place after 24wks and are all TMFR.

The vast abortions take place prior to 13wks gestation.

Limiting the system limits choice and increases the risks to women and girls.

@Pendulumface

I've had an ectopic pregnancy and I don't think I'll ever not be heartbroken over it. But my days, how on earth does one be so stupid to think that a embryo can simply be replanted?
These are literally the same people who think women’s vaginas clamp shut if threatened with rape, so all successful rapes were secretly ”not rape”. There is literally no engaging with this depth of misogyny.

Having read this thread I have come to the belief that we have got it about right in this country.

It’s the woman’s choice when she has an abortion - no one else’s. The reason for the abortion is irrelevant.
Viviennemary · 09/04/2022 21:21

You are quite wrong Parker 231. On many levels. Wrong sex is not an acceptable reason in this country for a termination. So your argument fails at the first hurdle.

Parker231 · 09/04/2022 21:58

@Viviennemary - a women can have an abortion up to 24 weeks without a reason (including an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy) and for medical reasons after that.

82chick · 09/04/2022 22:10

It's all about control and punishment. That's why these states also have the death penalty. If they really cared about these unborn babies they would look after them properly when they arrived, but their approach to healthcare just demonstrates how little they do actually care.

Not wanting a baby is an acceptable reason

And what does the personal life of this woman who you seem to loathe for some reason have to do with abortion rights in the US?
MyCatIsAJerk · 10/04/2022 00:46

@SalsaLove

The far right Christian movement has gained lots of power over the past 20 years. This includes coalitions of anti-abortion, gun loving, white supremacist types.
This. Plus they’re only banning abortion in Republican-controlled states.

Abortion is still legal in states like California.

And don’t forget - conservatives are making life harder for lots of people: they’re making it harder to vote, taking free lunches away from poor children, trying to take away medical care, trying to wage war on poor people in general, ad nauseam.

The Republican party just loves to hurt people. I think they must jerk off at night thinking about it.

Even if she's wearing her "I ❤️ abortions" t-shirt and carrying her little "just got back from the clinic" badge whilst tallying up her loyalty points to see if she gets a free gift next time it would still be none of your business.

Her body. Her choice.

I had a discussion with a religious vet a few years ago (in the midwest of the US). He regularly induces abortion on dairy cows for various reasons. However, is very anti abortion in people. When I challenged him as to why this is ok, he said 'well obviously because people have souls, but animals don't.' To him, the answer was black and white.

Religion has a lot to answer for.

Polyanthus2 · 10/04/2022 07:36

We have DNA testing now. Obviously what would help is holding the father acountable for the cost of bringing up the child.

But patriarchy rules.

MindPalace · 13/04/2022 10:31

The Oklahoma ban has now been made into law. A sad day. Although clearly not for the governor.

Wat.

I can't get into a discussion about 'souls'. Its a meaningless term. The question is personhood. (Dolphins and some great apes easily pass what I would consider a reasonable test of personhood btw. Some countries even grant it to them in law).
