@Billandben444

I've just watched the 6pm BBC news. They had a section on Berlin families welcoming refugees into their homes - they stood at railway stations with placards saying how large a family they could take and how delighted they were to accommodate them. Every single family on that train was 'taken home'. It made me cry.
I was coming on to post exactly this - made me cry too.

Among the enemy aliens in the territory of a Party to a conflict there may be one category whose position warrants special consideration [p.263] -- namely refugees who have been forced by events or by persecution to leave their native land and seek asylum in another country.

With the caveat that the article refers to events over 80 years ago some may find this of interest:

@Bluebellsunderthetrees Are you suggesting that the war in the Donbass region was wholly one sided ?

Thread 7 now up in readiness of this hitting the 1000 post limit, but I forget to put 7 in the title, sorry.

Thanks all for contributing so much, I shall ge on catch up for a while so I've nothing to add to the discussion right now except unconfirmed reports (by me. Im.onky just awake so haven't checked up yet) from my friend in Poland that Ukraine successfully ran an offensive and cut off Russian troops on the left bank of Dniepr and reports of Belarussian troops crossing the border.

@NebbiaZanzare That made me cry, I was watching my toddler playing and chatting today and I thought the same, what do the next twenty years hold?

I don't know who they are but ...

Anders Ã…slund
@anders_aslund
This is quite extraordinary. China is more than neutral in favor of Ukraine:
"China-based AIIB freezes lending to Russia and Belarus over Ukraine war"

Justanotherlurker · 03/03/2022 21:10

@Headpain

The fact that they was redeployed from 'belt and road' in Africa hasn't quite hit the right Twitter channels is why the focus is just on Azov, give it a few days to get their narrative straight and they will then have an answer how it's the west/Tories etc are really bad

Of course they will be. Cripple Russia now. Then there are strategic and financial gains to be made in future. Disaster Capitalism innit.

Best watch them border bufferzone countries Mr Putin.

Also if you ensure that the war is prolonged, you have Western Eyes and Pockets firmly focused on other things whilst you can slowly advance your influence elsewhere.

Whats not to lose?

Tigersonvaseline · 03/03/2022 21:11

How can we start a tweeter or media thing to stop calling him president

Tigersonvaseline · 03/03/2022 21:11

And Amazon to provide tablets to children?

grannysbay · 03/03/2022 21:14

Bluebellsunderthetrees

Unfortunately, if you look at Chechnia, and Russian action there, it helps to follow the playbook. Some of the issues in Donbas were fermented by Russian actors who constantly inflamed the situation.

Tigersonvaseline · 03/03/2022 21:20

Well it might be disaster capitalism but would a socialist extreme left China government admit that??

RagzRebooted · 03/03/2022 21:23

@Logburning

Is this good news?
I imagine it's so when things like that Romanian plane going down yesterday happen, they can call up and say it wasn't Russia so please don't start (more) war over it?
Furries · 03/03/2022 21:25

Will there come a point when Putin insists that all foreign journalists etc leave the country?

RedToothBrush · 03/03/2022 21:28

@Tigersonvaseline

Its about power and influence. If they see a fatal error by a significant world power especially one who neighbours them, you can bet your life they will do it purely for strategic reasons.

Being socialist is merely a domestic facade for China these days anyway.

Justanotherlurker · 03/03/2022 21:33

In a way, it's more that a globalisation aspect, no one is going to fight over oil any more, this century is over rare earth metals etc, it's why China is making inroads to Africa whilst Russia and China are also flamming the flames from both left and right of first world problems in the west.

Hawkins001 · 03/03/2022 21:39

@AuldAlliance

Thanks for the new thread. I'm curious about the posts saying Zelenskyy is a US puppet. He was elected in 2019, during the Trump presidency - was that the successful outcome of a strategy devised under Obama or Trump? The transcript of the phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy reveals the latter to be a bit fawning, saying he'd stayed at Trump's hotel. But then when Trump tried to get Zelenskyy to incriminate Biden, he stood his ground, leading to a huge freeze on aid to Ukraine and a refusal to invite him to the White House, which would have been a show of US support for Ukraine against Putin. Who was pulling his strings at that point?

I'd like more details on this puppetry.

That's the thing, in General the public never truly know, who really holds the influence with many regions of the world
Hawkins001 · 03/03/2022 21:39

We got a part 7 ?

Hawkins001 · 03/03/2022 21:40

And what's the legal status for all the people that are civilians going their to join the conflict ?

timtam23 · 03/03/2022 21:54

@ChimChimeny thank you, I did read something about that rabbi who is helping the infirm, he is in Kyiv I think? But there must be similar efforts in other Ukrainian cities, hopefully in Mariupol too although the situation there does sound very difficult.
@StrychnineInTheSandwiches - I know, it's just terrible to think about, being so far away and not knowing if your relative is even alive
