All the argument against a no fly zone says it would Hurt Ukraine?

That up hold it would mean NATO jets on Ukraine air space

Maybe Ukraine can be supplied with more jet's...

@Logburning

Can I ask a question, does anyone think we’ll implement a no fly zone? Or intervene in another way? So many people on Twitter seem to be calling for this, including Piers Morgan it seems! To me it would be a catastrophic decision and would possibly end in nuclear war. I want my child to grow up and have a future, sorry if that’s selfish but I don’t think world war three with Russia is the best idea…especially when they have nukes.
I just can't see why they would say no no no and then eventually change their minds. These humanitarian corridors gone me some hope that things may not escalate out of the country as the only other reason I could see nato getting involved is if the civilian casualties really start to mount up.

No I don’t think we will

Twitter isn’t great if you want to keep your anxiety down

Log, I know as much as you, but I seriously doubt there will a no fly zone or that there will be a war between the West and Russia. Your child will grow up, try not to worry so much.Flowers
GrandRapids · 03/03/2022 18:28

Also I don't think NATO is going to be influenced by Piers Morgan or any other celebrity bluster for that matter!

valerianaofficiana · 03/03/2022 18:31

NATO is a defensive military alliance. It will not attack, its raison d'etre is to protect its members.
So to answer all the panicked questions, no, it will not intervene. It will send military aid, humanitarian aid and financial aid but will not supply fighter jets nor create no-fly zone.

katem98 · 03/03/2022 18:31

@Wannago Thank you. You are SO right. I try so hard to ensure my babies grow up to be kind and considerate. My toddler was kicking up a fuss earlier about not having more screen time and I just wanted to shake him and say, if only you knew what other children are going through at the moment. Makes my heart bleed.

I was worried that the mobile crematoria would be to hide evidence of atrocities but if the Russians are planning public executions then they are obviously quite happy to quell resistance by broadcasting their reprisals. It's a bit like using novichok precisely because you want to demonstrate what you are capable of.

Piers Morgan is desperately trying to stay relevant, that's all.

From the BBC

'Nato not considering no-fly zone', says US ambassador
Nato is not considering a no-fly zone to counter Russian aggression in Ukraine, the US ambassador to the bloc has said.

Speaking to BBC News, Julianne Smith said: "We do not believe at this point that NATO needs to be party to this conflict.

"[We are] providing a tremendous amount of both lethal assistance and humanitarian assistance."

Nato has faced calls to introduce a no-fly zone to stop Russia using its jets to support its forces on the ground, but many have raised concerns that the move would escalate the conflict.

Smith did reiterate that Nato was not willing to compromise on its policy of having an "open door" to prospective members in Europe.

"That question rests with the aspirant countries... and with the Nato allies. Russia has no veto power whatsoever over that," she said.

"We’re going to begin conversations about longer term posture changes that the alliance may need to take in the weeks and months ahead.

"Nato is doing the opposite of what Russia wants."

She also criticised Russia's decision to put its nuclear forces on high alert.

"We do not like Russia talking about any sort of escalation… as it relates to their nuclear posture," she said.

"We find this rhetoric to be extremely dangerous and it increases the risk of miscalculation. We’re interested right now in seeing Russia leave Ukraine, call for a ceasefire, and de-escalate this situation.”

Interesting.
In spite of the occasional squabbles I’m finding these threads so helpful and informative. I can’t talk so much about this to people in real life - either they know nothing about it or don’t want to or get overly panicked or there are DC nearby etc.

HairyToity · 03/03/2022 18:45

I might sound mad, but I feel the only way out of this utter catastrophe for Ukraine and Russia is for Putin to be taken out. I think his days are numbered. Someone who has close proximity will turn. Eventually. Tick tock.

Thanks. So maybe it is because i am old enough to remember from before 1991. I will try.

Thank you for this, it has been bothering me for weeks as I was sure I remembered it being The Ukraine when I was a child. Article helpfully explains why it is not acceptable to add the article.

Not mad at all. I was reading earlier that when the Russian stock market fell by 94% in 1998 the government fell within a week. The Russian stock market isn't open at the moment but in the last fortnight Russian stocks in the London stock market have fallen by 98%. If those in Moscow aren't moved by the atrocities in Ukraine they might be by seeing their fortunes dwindle.
ChimChimeny · 03/03/2022 18:51

@timtam23

I have only read part of the thread so apologies if this has been mentioned already. I keep thinking of an interview on R4 Today this morning with a Ukrainian Professor in the UK, he is from Mariupol and his mother still lives there. As the interview progressed it became clear that he has lost all contact with his mum over the last few days. He then said that his mother is 85 years old, immobile, bedbound and is totally reliant on the kindness of neighbours coming in to change her, turn her in bed, give her food. He didn't know if the neighbours were still able to get to his mum or help her. She must be one of so many in the same terrible situation, unable to escape the conflict and completely helpless in her home, totally reliant on others to care for her. To have family members in that situation but uncontactable - must be so awful. The next item after that interview was about the DEC emergency appeal so I donated, it seems all that I could do to help the aid effort in some way
there was a post around page 5 I think about various rabbis & volunteers who are helping to get food and water to the elderly, infirm, bed bound etc. I'm not sure where they are but hopefully his mum still has people looking after her.

The agony of not knowing must be unbearable

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/03/2022 18:52

I know it's different today because it's not so much a government but one person who controls all.

timetochangeusername · 03/03/2022 18:54

Sorry if I'm repeating, not caught up yet, but just saw a tweet from mark austin about leaving Kyiv, sounds like the broadcasters are starting to pull out which is very grim .

The western dilemma is awful. And the nuclear deterrent has been proved not to work. It actually means we cannot act. Surely otherwise we would be at least providing air support.

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2022 18:54

Uk to sanction 2! more oligarchs, Uzbekistan-born Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov and former Russian deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov.

ChimChimeny · 03/03/2022 18:55

@Tuba437

Praying this is true. I know its not huge but much more progress than I was hoping for from these talks.
Not sure if this is a fact question, but assuming this happens now will it be communicated to the Russian soldiers? There have been multiple reports of their poor comms systems, so how will they all know to do this?.
TheSillyMastiff · 03/03/2022 18:57

The mobile crematorium is for Russia's soldiers. It's how Russia get away with reporting less military deaths.

They simply tell the families then that they are POW's and when they never return the family believe their captors must have killed them.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/03/2022 18:57

I cannot imagine the torture of not knowing if your elderly and infirm parent was okay, had enough food, wasn't fallen on the floor. If they were alone and terrified. If they were still alive.

Good. I think Usmanov is one who owns a big country pile in England.

Same, thereisnolight. Probably a large part of why I've spent so much of the last week here on this one thread!
