Some of the twitter commentators are getting a bit too gleeful about posting tweets full of anxiety that are not actually based in fact. I think these people start off well intentioned and then get a bit too into it and over egg it.

You saw it during covid as well with people like Deepti Gurdasani. Even Devi Sridhar who I very much respect once posted a tweet about the covid strain in minks and the tweet was just something like "this is bad", nothing else. I remember that because it properly sent me into a tailspin.

Jumping in to thank everyone who has contributed to the last six threads. What concerns me now is the humanitarian crisis; how do the Ukrainian defenders feed themselves in cities that are encircled and bombed?

Newrunner29 · 02/03/2022 21:33

@Tigersonvaseline

Nope I'm not buying that.

All sorts of things get thrown up and one thing that's been thrown into Sharp focus is biased/shadowy funding from corrupt sources...

That also I feel applies to Saudi money And all countries with poor human rights record's And no democracy.

Alexandra ,I wasn't talking about specific visa promotions but all politicians being vulnerable to corruption.

That's something I'd like to see going forward but I guess some people just want to target the party they don't likeConfused

No people r mentioning it because its 100% relevant to the current situation why can't u see that?! I don't mean that rudely just genuinely asking

I agree and don’t do Twitter, headlines or TV news only radio, Times or R4. Lowers the anxiety levels still tense though!

IANAE but the wreckage of the MiG being in one burning piece would suggest to me that it crashed - blown up in midair it would be in smithereens
Sorry - the footage is of the search heli not the MiG

Cod. Rug. Earl.
I have much less grasp than some (many?) on these threads so rarely post, but Marshal law would imply that Putin is scared of losing his grip, surely?

Definitely my sense is he wants to further crush dissent within Russia itself.
notimagain · 02/03/2022 21:36

@1Week

notimagain why Scotland in particular, do you know?
In the main it was the Russian/Soviet Long range aircraft (Air Force and navy), and especially their anti -submarine types. They would often come out of their bases up on the Kola Peninsula, around Murmansk, go around the North Cape of Norway and then head down towards or into the UK-Iceland gap area either to start doing anti-submarine exercises ( think hunt for Red October) or sometimes they’d keep just going south west to Cuba.
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/03/2022 21:37

The Germans have seized the $600m yacht of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov. Germany's been meaning business the past few days.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 21:37

New runner the posts are in context of links of Russian influence going back as least as far as Blair and probably before that...

So with no context from the last threads they will be harder to understand.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 21:38

Strychnine

That's great!
Why on earth are we and the states And other places allowing them all to sail away??

Found this an interesting discussion of the situation and what could happen next. It's a long read but more informative than the mainstream news bites. The last section is terrifyingly plausible.

The US Department of Defence says Russian forces have achieved little progress in the past 24 to 36 hours.

In particular, a 60 km (40 mile) convoy of troops pushing south into the capital Kyiv has been slowed by Ukrainian fighters and "remains stalled", spokesman John Kirby said on Wednesday.

"We believe the Russians are regrouping themselves and reassessing the progress they have not made," he told reporters.

Kirby noted the invading troops are generally facing less resistance in the south of the country than in the north.

But he said the Pentagon could not confirm that the southern city of Kherson has fallen, as the Russians have claimed.

In spite of their slowed momentum, he cautioned, Russia retains additional power at its disposal that is yet to be used.

It seems a big deal and I’m wondering if there’d be kick back

FatCatThinCat · 02/03/2022 21:40

The New York Times is reporting that China knew about the plans to invade Ukraine and just asked for it to be delayed until after the winter Olympics. Can't be spoiling their party now can we. Bastards.

notimagain · 02/03/2022 21:41

@Natsku

They regularly invade the airspace in Finland, not sure about Sweden, and not in a legitimate way.

I know, that’s the problem with your sovereign airspace border being coincident with the land border…by the time you realise the inbound isn’t going to turn away…Shock
