Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

Greattimestroubledtimes, that's quite a statement, especially 'Russia does not start wars'

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2022 17:58

@Greattimestroubledtimes

Statement from the Russian Embassy in Canada (blue tick account):

twitter.com/RussianEmbassyC/status/1498816008756383744

They are in another entirely parallel universe.

So the claim is Ukrainians are bombing their own schools, residential areas and killing people

I find that a hard read, the awfulness of what’s happening then this on top

notimagain · 02/03/2022 17:58

@RedToothBrush

I seem to recall that the invasion had to be before the spring, because the warmer weather would be harder to move heavy vehicles as the ground thawed up a bit and got muddy. Or was I imagining that one?

No you were not imagining it….the theory was they either moved when the ground was frozen hard or moved once it has dried out…

There’s already some footage around of Russian vehicles, including some armour, that has gone off road in the last day or two and become bogged down and immobilized.

Bowbridge · 02/03/2022 18:04

Sorry if it has been asked before...

Why can't the Ukrainian military blow up the 40 mile convoy of Russian troops/tanks etc? They must have missiles, drones etc.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 18:05

Bow it's been mentioned I can't remember the details

You would need a lot of drones and missiles.

@brogueish

I’ve been following these threads and appreciate the sensible and informed posts. Thank you.

I have a question. The Russian plan appears to be destroy the towns and kill the people. I don’t understand what of value will be left to lay claim to. In separatist areas I realise they’ll be welcomed with flowers, but what will be left everywhere else? Just space between the EU and Russia?

Thank you again for the helpful posts.

Even in separatist areas, the flowers, if any are actually left by then, may be few and far between. There's wanting to be part of Russia and then there's wanting to be part of a failing economy and a pariah state that has caused mayhem and bloodshed and committed war crimes. Even those who might be pro-Russia will probably feel muted joy.
BeyondPurpleTulips · 02/03/2022 18:12

Saw this earlier but have spent so much of today just catching up that I haven't mentioned it til now. It's about the issues fleeing from war or even accessing bomb shelters when you are disabled.

I'm a wheelchair user and the fleeing had occurred to me (if public transport were stopped, my power chair can do about five miles on one charge), but even then the bomb shelter issue hadn't.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

My understanding is that as Ukraine is not a NATO country it’s not easy to intervene under international law. As soon as a NATO country is attacked then that would mean NATO joined the war.

Just as well it's not, because then we're all fucked. This is why we need a buffer of non Nato states around Russia as badly as they do.

But I realise my opinion is unpopular.

A buffer is not going to happen is it? Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are already members, by taking Ukraine, which like Belarus will become a puppet state , he’s then up against Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia

So that leaves the Finish border and a tiny bit of Sweden. And they may just join

Or are you suggesting NATO go to the above and say sorry you are kicked out?

AuldAlliance · 02/03/2022 18:12

Marsha they're not claiming Ukrainians are bombing schools, etc., but that they have placed their defensive weaponry in areas where civilians live, and are therefore using the population as human shields.

Before anyone leaps on me, it's all BS. Video footage of cluster bombs shows that they weren't targeting Ukrainian defenses. But that's what they are saying, not that civilians are being killed by their own soldiers.

TheSillyMastiff · 02/03/2022 18:13

So Russia arrested and detained primary aged school children in Moscow for.laying flowers at the Ukrainian embassy and "no war" placards.

Verified by the BBC.

I mean....children...is there no end to their Draconian ways.

Gingerwarthog · 02/03/2022 18:15

BBC News at 6 showing Lillia and her two daughters (4 and 5) sheltering in a basement.
Lillia says she's keeping it together - except when the National Anthem plays and then she cries. She showed pictures of her children just a few weeks ago at dance classes.
I remember hearing on Radio 4 last Wednesday morning some young people in
Kyiv at a comedy club talking about a possible war.
Unbelievable that normal lives can change so quickly.

ChimChimeny · 02/03/2022 18:15

I don't think this has been posted, apoLogies if it has:

I get what you mean thanks was feeling a bit ill at spin, although still bad
ChimChimeny · 02/03/2022 18:16

Copy from the tweet

Good morning, this is Kyiv calling.

Last night Russia tried to assassinate Zelenskiy, their plot was foiled, their hit squad was eliminated.

The city’s defences have still not been breached.

Air raid sirens fill the sky.

But we are still here.

And we will remain here.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2022 18:17
@RedToothBrush

It's a good rule of thumb that whenever anyone writes anything you don't like on the internet, they're probably a Russian operative Hmm

No one's said anything other than that Russia's actions are evil, illegal and abhorrent.

Explaining is not condoning. Every conflict in history has root causes. If you want to leave it at, "Putin's evil" then no one disagrees with you.

I don't believe that this will help to reduce the possibility of such conflicts in the future though. I think that considering these events on a structural level may.
I don't actually think that. But I do think they have an agenda which involves disinformation rather than trying to understand things.

EsmaCannonball · 02/03/2022 18:27

Abramovich is selling Chelsea. Liquidating his assets and putting them where they can't be frozen or seized.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 18:27

What's Disinformation though?

Presenting any information from a biased view could be said to be Disinformation?

Or omissions, eg Tories are evil Putin puppets but ignoring link's to the Blair/brown era Which seeded and courted much of what we see today?

Biased, disinformation.

And... blindingly obvious and boring to read.

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2022 18:28

Jack Detsch

Ukraine has slowed down Russia's invasion due to four factors, per a senior US defense official

 1. Zelensky still has command and control of Ukraine's military
 2. Ukraine still getting a lot of military aid
 3. Military has managed resources well 4: Ukraine's "will to fight"

I saw the Daily Mail say that Russia has a border with Sweden, I'm not sure of that's what you mean, but can someone confirm I'm not going mad and that the north west region of Russia shares land borders with Finland and Norway but not Sweden.

HeadPain · 02/03/2022 18:32

Are the refugees in camps?

TassimoAddict · 02/03/2022 18:33

Obama said a few years ago the Ukraine (in particular, not other countries) is and has always been a "core interest" for Russia, not for the rest of the world.

Also, bear in mind a lot of the world is seeing this in the context of other recent situations.

(Encouraging people to fight for democracy as it makes cool headlines, then leaving them in the lurch, it would never happen, right! Hmm)

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 18:33

Very noble but I also wonder if that's capital gain's tax move?

Amnotamug · 02/03/2022 18:34

Have made the mistake of watching the 6pm news …seeing toddlers being pushed onto a train without their parents, to go to an unknown destination is absolutely horrific!! As a parent and grandmother I cannot imagine how these poor parents are coping…they are having to do this but it’s 100% against our human instincts .
I cannot see how the world can watch this and not intervene but on the other hand it could cause atrocities in many other places…a very shocking,horrific situation 😞
