Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

Anyone just watching Channel 4 news? Matt Frei"s interview asked the Russian former politician how it feels to be part of a pariah state and he eventually terminated the interview. He was so angry with her.

Genuine question here - what will be achieved by the UN voting to condemn etc etc? Or BJ condemning the barbaric actions? Or every celebrity it seems who is able to get in front of a camera?

My husband is originally from Georgia, he said before Putin went in, don’t worry, the west will make a lot of noise, but they won’t do anything, they never do. They didn’t help Georgia before, or Crimea, and they won’t do anything this time. The important money will have been moved months ago, it’s only ordinary Russians and the west who will suffer the effects of sanctions.

So far it seems horrific to think that he’s right. What are all the words going to do?

I also wonder what UN vote means

There is also provision of weapons.

What would you want to happen? Just out of interest

List of MPs who personally received Russian donations.

Some (to me) surprises in there, like Rory Stewart, who's now tweeting away about 'stand with Ukraine'.

HeadPain · 02/03/2022 19:29

We can't let Putin win.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 19:29

Strichenine

I didn't make my post clear, sorry.

Although Putin has this Wagner group on his pay roll I wonder what other "dogs of war" have funded to go in for Ukraine?

I'm sure some militia groups Go in for Ukraine.

It was similar to his interview a few days ago with Dmitry Suslov, who also took the line that “well, the West has no room to to talk, all the things you’ve done to other countries”. There is no reasoning with these people, they have picked their stance and are not going to move on it. Kudos to Matt Frei for trying, however.
ParsleySageRosemary · 02/03/2022 19:34

I cannot even begin to imagine how horrific this is to those states bordering Russia, but Russia’s excuse / rationale for acting is the presence of NATO on its borders. If NATO intervened directly before now it would’ve been WW3 and it most likely would be nuclear. Nobody would win, most of the world would be destroyed; for all species, never mind ‘just’ all humans. Is that what your husband would want Bunnyfuller?
Much still depends on China and the other powers now.

Personally, as a nobody off the web as well as on it, I wish the small states in that region would create an EU-like confederation of their own. They would be another rival to worry about, but that holds true for all.

@MarshaBradyo

Honestly, I’m like a rabbit in the headlights. DHs sister lives in Moscow, we called her last night. She work in govt. there. No one mentioned the war, Ukraine, anything. Our dogs and kids were chatting to each other as usual, lots of laughing.

Then when the call was finished we put the news on. Utterly surreal.
What do I want to happen? I want it to all stop, I have no idea how, I just can’t believe we are where we are.

In 2019 I had a major heart attack followed by several procedures on my heart. I just got back to work in Feb 2020 and we know what happened next. And now this. I just want it to not be happening. I see Georgia now wants to join the EU. Which will bring Putin’s eye back to them. Dh’s elderly parents live there, they are clueless how to get the ball rolling to get a visa to come here, and the last time he went, border control In Tbilisi airport tried to stop DH coming back, he has a Georgian name but speak fluent English and looked western. I can’t go, same reason only my Russian is really poor.

Do we know who the donors are? Are they all bad, all Putin supporters?
Iknowitisheresomewhere · 02/03/2022 19:37

Surely if Russia wants a ceasefire it just ceases firing? I mean - I don’t think Ukraine is bombing Russia, are they?

youhadmeatjello · 02/03/2022 19:39

@Amnotamug that’s horrific - is it in the rush to get in the trains? Women are still being allowed to leave with children aren’t they?
It just gets worse.

Alexandra2001 · 02/03/2022 19:40

Ukrainian MP in Washington saying West needs to stop importing Russian oil and gas (as this paying for his war) and if the West wont do a no fly zone because they believe Putin would fire nuclear missiles, then Putin would do it anyway.

She has a point.

General Petraeus saying all Russian mansions, yachts etc seized publicly on Tv etc before we do a NFZ.

Criminal insanity to be giving a 30 day notice period, may as well not bother.

I think we are witnessing another Holocaust, maybe in a few years we can have a memorial & a remembrance day?

LawnFever · 02/03/2022 19:40

Genuine question, if Russia succeeds and takes Ukraine, what’s to stop Putin doing the same to all the counties he views as former USSR?

If nobody stops him won’t the rest of those countries be next in his plan?

Postdatedpandemic · 02/03/2022 19:41

Twitter thread with a translation of an article from Komsomolskaya Pravda (Russian tabloid) of what the Russians are being told / are thinking. It is quite horrifying and seems to tie up nicely with Lukashenko's invasion map
twitter.com/DmitryOpines/status/1499071505757614080

It is always good to have a grasp of what the other side is thinking.

Ukraine is subdivided into at least three countries, comprising "New Russia" "Small Russia" and then the Western bits, which they don't hugely care about.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 19:41

Good speech from Whitehouse ( not biden), Antony blinken.
He made a good distinction between Putin and the Russian people.
We must, must must always remember Putin Putin Putin And not Russia.

Of course my husband doesn’t want WW3, no one does, I’m not sure what part of my post made you ask such a thing, @ParsleySageRosemary

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 02/03/2022 19:44

I haven't a clue what is going on behind the scenes but they have asked for ceasefire negotiations several times.

continu you’ve said this a few times now, yes they’ve asked for negotiations talks however never once have they ceasefire, not even when Ukraine asked for immediate ceasefire when the negotiations were being held.

Russia has murder babies, children, teens, women and men!!! They are evil, the aggressions snd absolutely nothing can condone their illegal murderous war crimes.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 02/03/2022 19:45

*Murdering

Inkanta · 02/03/2022 19:45

I sense that no one is going to stop Putin - and that seems to be the world we live in now. The leaders condemn his actions but won't do anything about it and stop him. He can occupy the Ukraine by force and we all have to look on - frustrated but resigned to that fact.

Oaktree55 · 02/03/2022 19:46

Anyone know if a missile at one of Ukraine’s reactors would cause radiation leak? I think that’s probably a more likely scenario given they’re rather indiscriminate at present.

youhadmeatjello · 02/03/2022 19:49

I wondered that @Oaktree55
I noticed iodine has gone up in price already.

I keep seeing comments saying Russia has asked for ceasefire negotiations but haven’t seen it reported anywhere

Sorry, just catching up - are people suggesting that some posters on this thread are Russian propagandists? That's very disturbing if so, and should Mumsnet admin not be able to check / verify? However, I have to say I'm finding the general propaganda- what's true and not - of this war so far very tricky. How can we trust the things we are being told either? When I see a number of posts on other channels like Al Jazeera or even just some more USA based Facebook, the comments are overwhelmingly Anti-west and NATO. And apparently Putin's popularity ratings are higher at the moment than ever. It makes me question if society en masse is seeing things the way we are or not. But surely even those who are anti West can't think this is OK?
