@RedToothBrush
Are you a linguist? Really interested in your comments re the use of language.

DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 19:13

I’m beginning to get nervous now.

StormzyinaTCup · 28/02/2022 19:14

@DrBlackbird

So thoughts on the EU offering membership to the Ukraine?!?

Doesn’t this escalate tensions so not a wise move??

Yes, I believe it does but not many others on here seem to think so, I thought it must be just me.
DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 19:15

Zelensky formally applied. News stating EU accepted Ukraine’s application. Was breaking news.

Do you think 15% of the population of Ukraine or 7 million people might be willing to die for Ukraine? Given also that Ukrainians formed part of the same Soviet forces in WW2.[/quote]
Have a look at this video

"For my country I'm prepared to die."

This ex-solider, who we've kept anonymous, tells @lewis_goodall he's leaving Poland to return home to Ukraine to fight in the war against Russia

LadyFlumpalot · 28/02/2022 19:15

This is interesting. A millitary plane has just left Brize Norton and is due to land on the Moldova/Ukraine border. I wonder what it's taking over.

Thought it was Zelenskyy that asked for it, not the other way round.
Player456 · 28/02/2022 19:18

I'm finding FB really hard. I have a few friends who are vehemently on Russia's side and believe this whole thing is fantasy and propaganda.

One shared a screenshot of a tweet, claiming that the Russian tank that ran over the car, was in fact Ukrainian. When I asked for a link I was just advised to look at the Twitter feed and should not believe Western media.

I did look at the Twitter feed, the person is staunchly anti Russian and very pro Ukrainian, who has a strong knowledge of weapons and warfare (they have a tick). So the screenshot was false, yet the people who accept this as the truth, are the ones who see the truth Confused

I've noticed it's the same people who didn't believe in COVID, didn't wear masks, thought vaccines were changing our DNA are the same people who believe that Russia is good and Ukraine are the aggressors.

Igotjelly · 28/02/2022 19:18

Gaining EU membership is a very long and convoluted process.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/02/2022 19:18

Thanks for the new thread.

Seems crazy. Very provocative.

Yes and Zelensky made a video of him signing said application and then posted it to SM.

Zelensky has formally requested. The Independent saying that a motion was published tonight with support of all mainstream political parties and will be voted tomorrow as part of emergency Brussels session. Reporting saying that it’s certain to pass.

Ncwinc · 28/02/2022 19:22

’Seems crazy. Very provocative.’

Russia are currently invading their country and bombing civilians. What exactly would they be provoking?

Motherdare · 28/02/2022 19:22

How can applying for membership of the EU possibly help things right now? Talk about red rag to a bull.

Thereisnolight · 28/02/2022 19:25

I said on the previous thread on pg 40 that some Polish colleagues I spoke to are enraged and heading to Poland to join their reserves. They have no interest in diplomacy - they are convinced that they are next and are vv angry and ready to fight. These are people I thought were calm and peaceful. It’s a tinderbox over there - on both sides. I hope things can be resolved by diplomacy.
Which Ukraine applying for the EU now really isn’t.

DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 19:25

@Igotjelly

Apparently there’s a "new special procedure"? Also what’s being reported… guess we’ll see what happens today. Regardless, this whole discussion does seem very inflammatory. Ukraine still not part of NATO but will be seen as further incursion of West.
Ripepear · 28/02/2022 19:25

That’s what I keep thinking motherdare but I am not very knowledgeable about these things 🤷‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 28/02/2022 19:26

@UKRAINEwearewithyou

Any Russian on here or Russian supporters? Interesting to hear what they think about the madness of Putin.
I’m listening to a moving account from someone in Russia (Times radio) and she says most are against but more likely in Moscow as they have access to other media
DrBlackbird · 28/02/2022 19:27

Provoking a wider European war?

Gingabex · 28/02/2022 19:27

I've been following @YourAnonNews and they've suggested to leave a Google review of a restaurant in Russia (5 stars) with Russian text imploring them to not to believe the propaganda. See the thread twitter.com/YourAnonNews/status/1498337491056836610

Ncwinc · 28/02/2022 19:28

Again, when you’re currently being invaded, what will this inflame? There may have been ‘peace’ talks but the Russians haven’t stopped shelling. They’re carrying on with the invasion.

www.indiatoday.in/news-analysis/story/russia-ukraine-war-news-saint-vladimir-religious-angle-invasion-ukraine-1917721-2022-02-25 Or unherd.com/2022/02/putins-spiritual-destiny/ The religious angle of Ukraine’s invasion hasn’t been discussed yet on these threads. Could there be something in this?
This is so interesting, thanks for posting. From the unherd article:

Into this religious intensity we can add some angry church politics. In 2019, the Ukrainian arm of the family of Orthodox churches declared its independence from the Russian Orthodox Church — and the nominal head of the Orthodox family, Bartholomew I of Constantinople, supported it. The Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, described this as “a great victory for the devout Ukrainian nation over the Moscow demons, a victory of good over evil, light over darkness”.

The Russian Orthodox Church furiously rejected this claim to independence, stating that Ukraine belonged irrevocably to its “canonical territory”. This led to a historic split within the Orthodox family, with the Russian church rejecting the primacy of Bartholomew, declaring that they were no longer in communion with the rest of the Orthodox family. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov denounced Bartholomew as an American stooge. Kirill even claimed the reversion of the Hagia Sophia – originally the global HQ of Orthodoxy – to a mosque in 2020 was “God’s punishment”. The Russian Church then proceeded to set up its own Dioceses around the world, especially in Africa. “They are taking to the streets with posters saying “Thank you, Putin! Thank you, Patriarch Kirill!”” was how the Russian church’s propaganda machine described it.

I had no idea that the Ukranian Orthodox church had split from the Russian Orthodox church - and in 2019. Seems a hugely significant factor to me in all this.
