Putin still has a hefty war chest and money will still be flowing in inspite of the sanctions whilst they still buy russian gas!

It's 700 million DOLLARS a Day.

Gingerwarthog · 28/02/2022 18:10

News posted on BBC news from the
children's hospital in Kyiv. Kids sheltering in the basement and one Dr interviewed explaining that one of a pair of brothers brought in had died - they would do everything they could to save the other boy.

Roussette · 28/02/2022 18:10

Thanks for new thread Smile

vera99 · 28/02/2022 18:11

The aim seems to be to have gone in, caused the leadership to run like shit and move right in. At the very least leave a power vacuum.

That way they could say "see this regime wasn't ever legitimate, what gangsters and cowards, now it's time for real elections (led by us, your friendly Russian liberators) to put one of Putin's buddies or clients in charge."

A plan that didn't survive contact with Zelensky standing still and saying go fuck yourself, or literally every other Ukrainian doing the same thing.

itsgettingweird · 28/02/2022 18:11

Thanks for the new thread.

Come home from work and watching Sky news.

Those broadcasters are amazing. Out there in there protective gear to bring is the situation and the truth.

The Ukrainians deserve that. They have shown what true patriotism is all about.

MarshaBradyo · 28/02/2022 18:11

Thanks op

Schools have been turned into collection points. I asked at the start of Thread 3 what was happening to schools and this is the answer.

Tigersonvaseline · 28/02/2022 18:14

Extraordinary that shell and BP are severing ties with Russia oil company!

MarshaBradyo · 28/02/2022 18:14

Tigersonvaseline · 28/02/2022 18:15

I wonder where those russian subs are right now!!

CaveMum · 28/02/2022 18:15

If anyone has missed it, there’s the 3rd part of a new series on BBC 2 tonight about the psychology of dictators - namely Hitler and Stalin - called “Rise of the Nazis”.

The other episodes are on iPlayer and I must say there are an awful lot of parallels to draw with Putin and his behaviour - ignoring advice of more experienced military people, utter self belief and paranoia.

Gingerwarthog · 28/02/2022 18:16

Heartbreaking scenes from Lviv train station (BBC). A young Dad saying goodbye to his infant son - both of their hands up to the train window.

NCdBcOuting · 28/02/2022 18:16

@RedToothBrush really interesting analysis, thank you for taking the time to set it out.

Do you think Putin is wholly conviction driven, then, as the “posted in error” article sets out? It crossed my mind that the “error” might have been some sort of tactic to gain negotiating advantage, like “oh look he really is nuts let’s placate”. But seeing your explanation makes me think it’s more straightforward - he is a zealot.

@ILoveAllRainbowsx also interesting about the gold, thank you.

Ripepear · 28/02/2022 18:18

Thanks for new thread op

Thanks for new thread op.

Rise of the Nazi's is a great series.

.. no news on more sanctions legislation, seems there are further delays, MPs were expecting this now.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 28/02/2022 18:20

Thanks for the new thread. Not sure if someone answered and I missed it who will try Putin of war crimes? Surely they can do soon?

Greenhippoblue · 28/02/2022 18:21

Glad to see FIFA & UEFA have pulled their fingers out and banned Russian teams from all competitions

Lampface · 28/02/2022 18:23

Placemarking, these threads are very reassuring, thanks to those who keep them going.

CPL593H · 28/02/2022 18:24

Putin now feels to me like a walking embodied composite of the worst of Russian history, both under the Tsars and as Soviets. What he is missing is any reflection of the incredible bravery and Stoicism with which so many Russians defended their homeland against the Nazis. That role is now falling to the people of Ukraine.

I truly pity the Russian people.

TheSillyMastiff · 28/02/2022 18:24

@Tigersonvaseline

Ukraine does have planes? Can't the planes bomb the tanks etc? How did Russia carpet bomb them?
There are Ukrainian drone operations "taking out" some logistical operations on the outskirts.

They can't however target them once they have made it in to cities, because of the possibility of civilian casualties.

A hand held anti tank missile is best on the ground, a javeline. This is what many countries are giving Ukraine due to the fact they are in the middle of urban warfare.

Tanks however are not the most effective weapon in a urban setting, due to the fact they are heavy, have poor visibility and the tracks can be disrupted by anything getting jammed in them, so barbed wire and large X shaped metal objects are used to stop their advance.

The engines also need a lot of air circulating in them meaning it's an "exposed area" hence why the civilians are aiming Molotov cocktails at the unprotected engine outlets.

These threads are so informative, thank you OP

The Ukraine people really aren't giving up, Putin never expected that
