My degree was in media studies with history. It covered political communication and propaganda. My personal interest in history, focused on American history so I picked a bunch of modules around that area (so a lot of history of the birth of liberal democracy and cold war type stuff).

So I have studied this (to a point!), and even though that was 25 years ago now, its something Ive never really stopped being really interested in. Ive always had a real fascination in war journalism and find the social history of this stuff really interesting.

I don't call myself an expert (i didn't go past bog standard degree level) but I would call myself a complete nerd. It really helps me contextualise and understand the world rather than completely and utterly despair over it. Its something of a coping strategy!

Zelensky has formally requested. The Independent saying that a motion was published tonight with support of all mainstream political parties and will be voted tomorrow as part of emergency Brussels session. Reporting saying that it’s certain to pass.

Current situation aside do they meet the criteria for EU membership? There are other countries who have been trying to join the EU for a long time. Would a fast track put noses out of joint there?

Ukraine requesting EU membership must be important to them, it could be a signal of allyship and Western unity.

Just to be clear, of course Ukraine wants to join, in no way am I suggesting this is unexpected or, from their perspective, unreasonable.

when you have Liz Truss constantly saying we were the first to do this against Russia and that against Russia etc etc. She needs to point out that the majority of the world are against Russia and button it a bit. She has already been named as the reason for the nuclear alert. STFU Truss and talk about how nations are saying this and that as a joint unity. What's with the ' we did this and that' claiming.

Re language, doublethink and disinformation I watched this earlier which I found in the comments of a Carole Cadwalladr twitter thread posted on the previous thread.

It's from a 2014 Adam Curtis documentary which attempts to explain the concept of 'nonlinear warfare' and Russia.

Ukrainians are justifiable blaming the Russians. The Ukrainians are in the right.
