So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

Thanks for the new thread. Watching the news with trepidation for everything that might come next.

cakeorwine · 27/02/2022 18:10

Thanks

There are a lot of Ukrainian threads at the moment - but this one seems to be the one that has most useful information.

AppleButter · 27/02/2022 18:10

Because you said “the last two threads are a credit to mn” i will go and read them now, I was wary of opening them in case they were panicky and simplistic. Will come back here later.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/02/2022 18:10

Thanks for the new thread

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 27/02/2022 18:10

So very scary

If Putin fired a 'small nuke' at Ukraine - we wouldn't fire a nuke back. Because we know what would happen.

So what does happen if a tactical nuke is fired at Ukraine?

Apart from the consequences for Russia financially, economically and politically from hopefully most countries around the world?

^

This would be my uneducated guess of what comes next. Ukraine hold out, Russia are embarrassed and throw a strop, using tactical nuclear weapons as they technically are not (afaik) outlawed in any existing treaty. And as Ukraine are non-nato, it still doesn't count as automatic retaliation

DiscordandRhyme · 27/02/2022 18:12

Worrying times - he's incredibly unpredictable (Putin).

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 18:13

Much appreciated.

Has any more reputable information been released on the border talks between Ukraine and Russia?

With another long night ahead for Ukraine and Russia advancing closer to the capital, I'm concerned of a artillery shelling operation against them this evening/tonight.

Natsku · 27/02/2022 18:13

Thanks for the new thread. Trying to keep a balance between keeping abreast of what's happening and constantly refreshing the news pages, this thread is a good balance.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 18:13

Watching BBC News and Ursula von der Leyen has made a strong statement against Russia, also explaining that Belarus will be targeted by sanctions.

Thanks for the new thread.

Greattimestroubledtimes · 27/02/2022 18:16

Are any of you on the FLightradar threads as well? Twitter is saying that all the Russian private planes are scarpering back to Moscow...

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 18:17

I’ve a question.

Is there anything at all Russia could do to Ukraine that would result in military action from the rest of the world ?

the80sweregreat · 27/02/2022 18:17

It is worrying and watching the news today is just heartbreaking.
Not sure who to believe or what to think and my history of Russia and Ukraine is sketchy.
Thanks for these threads, there are many who are more knowledgeable than I am and let's hope they can reach a peaceful conclusion ( there is always hope after all)

Ramalamadingdongs · 27/02/2022 18:18

Thank you for these threads.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 18:19

@Greattimestroubledtimes

Are any of you on the FLightradar threads as well? Twitter is saying that all the Russian private planes are scarpering back to Moscow...

What would that mean? Sorry if it's a silly questions, I just panic at everything Sad

natpaw · 27/02/2022 18:19

Thanks-as someone who has lived in worked in Ukraine I am finding this my go to place for info and analysis/chat (especially as my teenage boys don’t understand why I’m so obsessed!)

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 18:20

I imagine @newhairday it means the sanctions are biting and people are concerned about being able to return to Russia once the EU airspace is closed.

Inthesameboatatmo · 27/02/2022 18:20

Checking in for the new thread .

dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 18:21

Thanks OP!

I think this is a good article about the nuclear alert:
www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/02/27/ukraine-crisis-is-now-nuclear-crisis/

I follow a lot of nuclear experts (for work, not fun!) and they do not seem overly worried. The one thing that does concern them is that this might raise the risk of inadvertent escalation.

newhairday · 27/02/2022 18:21

Thanks @Roundeartheratchriatmas

NCdBcOuting · 27/02/2022 18:21

Name changed to come here and also say that this thread is a credit to MN. I’m finding it helpful and balanced. Thank you OP and everyone.

I’m a Brit of Russian heritage, needless to say completely appalled and heartbroken watching this unfold. A really compacted set of feelings I can’t even name yet. Like PP, would also be interested in how to help from here, other than donating money (already done) to reputable charities.
