newhair I think there’s a lot of us trying to keep up and make sense of it all while trying to understand the history of the region too so I don’t think you need to apologise.

I guess we see how the next 12/24 hours goes and the actions of the Russian invaders. Didn’t Putin assure Macron earlier that civilian attacks would be halted?

In a normal international negotiation usually the delegations would return to their capitals to discuss the outcome of the round and basically reassess red lines and what’s called negotiation landing zones ahead of the next round. In this case would imagine that and more killing of civilians unfortunately

I spoke with some Polish colleagues today and must admit was taken aback by their rage. Zero interest in diplomacy there. Some of them heading to Poland asap, convinced Putin is heading there next. Central Europe is a tinderbox. I really hope the UN can come up with the goods!

Banks is pretty much an unapologetic Putin fan (until now) and has a Russian wife and gave £7 million to the Leave campaign. He compared Ukraine as belonging to Russia like the Isle of Wight is to the UK.

Can I just say the Carole Cadwalladr thread about the Great Information War has been linked on here about five times now firstly by me early this morning
I know this thread has filled relatively quickly but I don't think some posters are reading back!

Gosh Sky News is absolutely awful just now, the presenters are carrying on through the sirens but they seem massively shaken by a blast that's just happened and the very real possibility that there will be more. They're so brave carrying on as best they can but it seems really grim there tonight.

Because in reality, nobody wants to start WW3.

Moldova is your nearest but they have neutrality agreement with Russia. Not to export arms, not to interfere with any military actions.

Finland is your next, but it has agreements with the other Nordic countries to not intervene to keep peace in the Nordic community.

Lots.of countries have bilateral agreements with others, to maintain global peace.

Does anyone else think it would be useful to have a list of journalists on this thread who are on Twitter reporting live from Ukraine?

It feels so unfair that mighty Russia can use Belarus;
But Ukraine has too stumble on alone.

Aside from the obviously dreadful, disgusting circumstances, I'm heartened by the world pulling together.

I wondered if the ‘denazification of the Ukrainian state’ was, bizarrely, directed at Zelensky ie he has to go. What else can he mean?

I believe there are a small number of Nazi minded people in Ukraine but given that the country elected a Jewish President and also has a Jewish PM its seems unlikely it's a nazi country so yes a call for denazification is bizarre.
