So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

@CovidCorvid

Could Russia be kicked out the UN?
A country can be expelled from the UN following a vote by all members but Russia could veto the result. I think there's a link to an article in one of the first two threads that explains that the UN is generally helpless right now.

@Hlglu56

Sweden are sending arms now, something that they have not done since 1939. They’re not even NATO. Is this just a show of unity from all these European countries or is there something else going on? Are they just trying to deter Putin from invading another European country after Ukraine? Has he got plans they know about? Or are they piling the pressure on to get Putin out ?
EU has said as a bloc the EU will send weapons to Ukraine (lifting its previous ban) and Sweden, like Germany is one of the worlds top manufacturers for weapons.

who'd have thought the country that gave us ABBA also make so many lethal weapons?

Sweden, with barely 10 million people, ranks between 14th and 15th among arms exporting countries; in 2017 its arms industry had a turnover of €3.5bn, 65% from exports

EsmaCannonball · 27/02/2022 19:13

I think Putin could be tried for war crimes but the worry is that the more he personally has to lose the more incentive he has to use extreme methods. We need the Russians to depose him and then to hope that that doesn't lead to the violent fracturing of Russia (e.g. Chechnya erupting again). I'd love Russia to have some kind of Velvet/Orange Revolution.

oakleaffy · 27/02/2022 19:13
Thermobaric weapons would be his weapon of choice if he wants to up the ante of mass destruction on Ukrainian forces or cities. However mad or calculating he may be I don't think he's mad enough to ever go nuclear in this context but then I didn't think he would ever be mad enough to go full-on invasion. What horrendous devilish things have human minds devised.
I googled these yesterday, and was horrified at how they work. They are outlawed by many Civilised nations {According to Google}

Place marking, really appreciate the sensible information shared and reputable sources from all.

KenAdams · 27/02/2022 19:14

@AutomaticMoon UN show of strength probably. There have been quite a few around that region in Flightradar flying up and down near the Polish/Ukrainian border.

KenAdams · 27/02/2022 19:15

Ffs NATO show of strength, not UN!

LetsGoDoDoDo · 27/02/2022 19:16

Place marking. Thank you for these threads.

uptonogoode · 27/02/2022 19:17

I can't believe his escalation

RAF nipping over too now - RRR6422 from Brize Norton fr24.com/RRR6422/2af629ff

notimagain · 27/02/2022 19:18

@AutomaticMoon

A us b52 left from uk the other day (fair-something?) and flew to poland and back. I wonder what that was about
Fairford.

They’ve been doing a few flights along those lines…show a presence? Who knows?

EasterIssland · 27/02/2022 19:18

Place marking thanks

littlenickyy61 · 27/02/2022 19:20

surely if he used a nuclear option against Ukraine then Russia would suffer from the fall out too. That why I feel he won't

Whatonearth2021 · 27/02/2022 19:22

Place marking - thank you for this information

HighlandCowbag · 27/02/2022 19:22

I hope and pray Putin gets sorted via his own people. Those poor people, not just the Ukraines but also the Russian soldiers who are basically cannon fodder for an old mans folly.

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2022 19:23

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

Thank you for the new thread Putin's days are numbered & he won't be with us by this time next week
I so hope you're right.
fucketyfuckwit · 27/02/2022 19:23

I do feel this whole thing will be over quite soon. One way or another.

dementedma · 27/02/2022 19:25

Reuters just reported huge Russian convoy heading for Kyiv.

Chloemol · 27/02/2022 19:25

@Greattimestroubledtimes

Are any of you on the FLightradar threads as well? Twitter is saying that all the Russian private planes are scarpering back to Moscow...
It’s interesting to see. Big gap over Belarus and Ukraine, no planes flying although interesting a small Cessna jet has just arrived from Moscow into Minsk

Let’s hope it’s someone starting peace talks

My concern is Belarus joining the bandwagon

workisnotawolf · 27/02/2022 19:26

Unfortunately I personally think we need to be prepared for all out war in Europe and getting everything ready for further escalation, whether deliberate or inadvertent. It is worrying due to inadvertent escalation as a result, especially on the nuclear front, but I do not think we have a choice to sit back at this point and not be fully prepared.

I am most fascinated by the involvement in this war by the likes of individuals like Elon Musk, on an academic level. Some of these rich “Western” persons are richer than countries and arguably have a huge sphere of influence. I am wondering how many persons of his ilk are involved behind the scenes. A call to be involved surely would apply to such persons as well and I wonder whether they check any actions with the US government directly or not.
The other point is that NATO did not envisage the Ukraine joining any time soon and as much as I support the Ukraine on every level, I also believe we should be working with them/on them to reach a compromise to agree with Russia not to join NATO for a limited period of time, entrenched in a treaty, provided that the Russians don’t interfere with their country further and leave. The difficulty is the semantics and the legal definitions working properly.
All of the above just my own personal opinion without any proper qualifications to comment really.

vera99 · 27/02/2022 19:27

This could get much much worse than this very quickly. Imagine if you will a bomb on the Moscow metro planted by a Ukrainian fascist killing hundreds of people in the rush hour or even a psy-op that does the same. Russia's Reichstag Fire moment.

Chechen troops north of Kyiv...

twitter.com/KofmanMichael/status/1498014743621259270?s=20&t=EMyslqRABA9xS3hWTbpL6g

Not quite the same as the young, bewildered Russians we've been seeing on social media.

oakleaffy · 27/02/2022 19:28

Just watched this.

Russian conscripts captured by Ukraine..They don't seem too keen.

yoolia · 27/02/2022 19:29

Their tactic with kyiv seems now to be that they keep it under siege so no one can get in and nor can food or supplies

a truly medieval tactic

TheBigDilemma · 27/02/2022 19:29
