Zelensky won't go to the talks. It'll be high level officials.

If the west get intelligence he is thinking of using the weapons I think they would have to use them first ? I wouldn't fancy being in Moscow right now .

We must have special forces in Moscow. There are amazing military professionals out there and these are desperate times so surely we can get to him.

formalineadeline · 27/02/2022 14:08

@the80sweregreat

His generals seemed to be nodding along to Putin's latest threats to put the nuclear forces on high alert. There were two men in the room with him when he spoke earlier on. I hope that the talks might work with Zelensky. Someone needs to do something here.
I hope that the talks might work with Zelensky.

Holding talks with Putin is about as effective as holding talks with Hitler was. Putin holds a similar level of religious belief and resentment about these lands 'belonging' to Russia etc etc.

He only pays lip service to diplomatic processes as a means to buy time for his other strategies or to take what he wants and give nothing in return.

It's depressing how little we learn from the past.

ParsleySageRosemary · 27/02/2022 14:09

Who would they be aimed at?

It shows his mindset all right - I’m not winning, the nasty west are all telling me to stop, I’m not getting my way, it’s all their fault. Boo hoo. Here’s my really big gun.

We asked this about Trump - is there’s anyone nearby who would refuse this order?

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/02/2022 14:09

@NobodysGonnaKnow

I want to believe NATO special forces are already in the country. I want to believe that the cry for feet on the ground will be answered. I want to believe this offensive by Russia will be beaten back.
Yes re SF being theare already. I hope this is true.

Is it possible/likely that more units will go in under the guise of being foreign volunteers answering Zelenskyy's call?

Sky news breaking headline is Russian nuclear 'deterrence forces' put on high alert after 'NATO threats'

@OvaHere

Wonder why they can’t be separate but talk, might be safer

No need even to be in person. We've spent the last 2 years doing everything on Zoom/Teams.

Maybe Jackie Weaver can chair the meeting ..

But in all seriousness, I fully agree a virtual meeting recorded would be a safer option.

Can nukes be intercepted ? Just looking for something to hold onto here ...!

Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 14:16

Apologies, I can't keep up! I posted while reading page 31, not knowing three more had come up

I wonder if that's to try and force Ukraine to back down at any talks

He has hypersonic missiles now, probably curtesy of China as they showed them off first and no we cannot intercept them.
Kassle · 27/02/2022 14:19

One could be, but not all of them. And if one was intercepted we'd have to send another back, and then we'd get more back = game over etc.

In answer to whoever says how can we be sure it's not just a case of Putin and Putin alone pressing a button, the answer is that there needs to be contingency in place in case of his sudden death, so it can't just be him who knows how to do it.

Just caught this on the BBC website re sanctions on oligarchs; "Labour's David Lammy called on the government to name those on its hit list". Am I being stupid or would it be really daft to let them know in advance?

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 14:26
www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220227-russian-official-apologises-for-war-in-ukraine-at-un-climate-meet
Brave man. Huge personal risk for making this statement and for expressing 'huge admiration' for the Ukrainian delegation.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/02/2022 14:27

I think David Lammy is an idiot for calling it a 'Hit List".

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 14:27

David Lammy will want them named so he can hit the government with accusations of dodgy dealings when many of them turn out to be Tory donors. Hence why they probably won’t.

Layla Moran already read those names out earlier this week in Parliament. And their names are no secret.
timetochangeusername · 27/02/2022 14:32

Journo Gordon Corera was calm and reassuring on BBC just now. I actually used to work with him and I trust his judgement and contacts so feel a bit calmer now .

I assume this is a new list.

What did he say?
purpleboy · 27/02/2022 14:35

How soon is he likely to use them if he does?

Is London a likely target given all the Russian money/investments there?

Sideorderofchips · 27/02/2022 14:36

London would be a big target along with Birmingham, Portsmouth, Plymouth anywhere with military bases

Kassle · 27/02/2022 14:37

How soon is he likely to use them if he does?

There is honestly 0 point in speculation of this kind. All it does is feed panic. And it really doesn't matter whether London is a target. If a nuke hit London it is goodbye to everyone, regardless of where in the UK you live. You don't want to survive a nuclear war (FWIW, I still don't think there is going to be one).

timetochangeusername · 27/02/2022 14:38

@Igotjelly can't remember exact words but essentially it was a threat to ramp up the fear but it didn't mean at all that he was planning to use them . I know Corera has a lot of intelligence contacts so he's a good person to listen to on this stuff , he's being doing his specialism a long time

oakleaffy · 27/02/2022 14:38

This is like the 1980’s all over again.
People thought they would be nuked, it was a terrifying era.
Hopefully
HOPEFULLY Putin will respect the Russian people well enough not to cause
Mutually Assured Destruction.

Grim.
