His inner circle really need to step up now and stop this for their sakes as well as everyone else's.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 13:45

@NobodysGonnaKnow
It's working out what to do for the best with that anger we all feel isn't it?

OvaHere · 27/02/2022 13:47

This is a good article about his state of mind and those around him. Seems like enforced isolation due to Covid has made him crazier and more paranoid than ever.

Just looked at Telegraph online and they are reporting that Liz Truss has stated she will support Britons who want to fight with Ukraine against Russia.

100%

Maybe this latest threat will be what tips them into action. We can only hope.

Ukraine and Russia set to hold negotiations at Belarusian-Ukrainian border, says office of President Zelenskyy

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2022 13:51

It really is impacting on everyone. DD - non-political - in her late 20's is furious and wanting to go and join the Ukranian foreign legion!

DH keeps saying 'we must go in and help them', although I believe there must be hundreds of NATO special forces 'helping them' quietly? Surely?

I truly wish Putin dead - awful to think that's the only way for this nightmare to stop.

Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 13:53

Isn't anyone worried they Will just kill or kidnappe Ukraine president!?

Just hope the Russians aren't using this (and any lull in fighting created by it) to bring in supplies, as they seem to have been caught short with poor logistical planning.
Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 13:54

Ajand

There are always rumours of black OPS, special team's And so on.

Covert missions of a few highly skilled individuals slipping in And out.

Yes a bit tbh

Wonder why they can’t be separate but talk, might be safer

How the hell fo you negotiate this mess? I can’t imagine what the compromise is.
Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 13:57

Bbc live reporting Putin has ordered his “nuclear forces on "special alert" - the highest level of alert for Russia's Strategic Missile Forces.

Speaking to top military officials, including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, he said Western nations had taken "unfriendly actions" towards Russia and imposed "illegitimate sanctions".

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 13:58

I doubt the negotiation would involve the Ukraine president himself. Probably one of his ministers.

DuncinToffee · 27/02/2022 13:58

More info via James Waterhouse @JamWaterhouse

President Zelensky announces talks with Russia:

(After speaking to 🇧🇾 leader Alexander Lukashenko)

“We agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet with the Russian delegation without preconditions on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, near the Pripyat River” 1/2

Alexander Lukashenko will ensure all planes, helicopters and missiles stationed on Belarusian territory remain on the ground during the Ukrainian delegation's travel, talks and return”

This is likely to be low level, and not without risk.

We’re the unfriendly ones are we?! You’ve got to laugh.
timetochangeusername · 27/02/2022 13:59

It's hard not to feel semi hysterical isn't it .

We need his generals to turn against him

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 14:00

I’m quite concerned at this escalation. I hope it is a bluff but ..he is a maniac.

OvaHere · 27/02/2022 14:00

No need even to be in person. We've spent the last 2 years doing everything on Zoom/Teams.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 14:00

He will use nukes without doubt

I don't agree. For these reasons:

  1. threatening to use them is not the same as using them. The entire point of having nuclear weapons is exactly this - you hope your enemies will be so scared you won't use them that all you have to do to get them to bend over is threaten to use them.

  2. He's not able to unilaterally press that button. People around him have to sanction it. I'd bet they aren't keen on being nuked themselves.

the80sweregreat · 27/02/2022 14:03

His generals seemed to be nodding along to Putin's latest threats to put the nuclear forces on high alert. There were two men in the room with him when he spoke earlier on.
I hope that the talks might work with Zelensky.
Someone needs to do something here.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 27/02/2022 14:04

2) He's not able to unilaterally press that button. People around him have to sanction it. I'd bet they aren't keen on being nuked themselves.

Is this definitely true though? That he hasn't got sole control over authorisation to launch nukes? I'm fairly sure that everywhere else numerous people are needed to authorise their use but can we be sure that the situation in Russia is the same?

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 14:04

Negotiations via Zoom or Teams seems far more sensible! Perhaps publicising this means they are safer to meet in person. I don’t know. I can’t see Russian forces asking for permission to retreat quietly, it’s going to be another sabre rattling war cry on behalf of the Narcissistic One.

formalineadeline · 27/02/2022 14:04

It's a threat at this stage. He knows NATO has enough nuclear weapons to destroy all of Russia.

And simply removing Putin would not change much. There are too many other men just like him who'd simply take his place. An entire autocratic, corrupt, abusive state is never transformed simply by removing one person.

Febrier · 27/02/2022 14:06

I keep wondering what it's been like at international meetings. How is Putin treated? When he looks on at other world leaders being cordial, what goes through his mind? When Barack went back to the hotel room to Michelle or Theresa to Philip, who did Putin go back to?
