@TracyBeakerSoYeah

What would Putin do if all the NATO countries sent troops in to Ukraine to overthrow the Russian invaders? Surely he's not nuts enough to press the button as that would most likely end up in MAD & surely he's not that deranged enough to wipe the whole world out.

Although I know it's happening I still can't get my head around what's happening - it's like the world has flipped into a parallel universe circa 2016 whereas previously the world wasn't perfect but it was a darn sight better & easier to live in.

Of course he's deranged enough He totally would. If he doesn't get his way and loses face I don't think he would hesitate

This scares me ~ I am not saying it shouldn’t happen but how is Putin going to react to it.

Russia threatening nuclear power plant.

CovidCorvid · 27/02/2022 06:56

Press reporting that Ukraine have obliterated a load of Checynan fighters en route to Kiev including a senior general. They were thought to be a kill squad on their way to hunt down Ukraine politicians.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 07:06

Just woken up and catching up. It sounds to me that Russia won’t ‘win’ this however are they mental enough to take everyone with them if they think they’re on the brink of losing. Could the orders be to blow up the nuclear power station I’d all else fails or is that a bargaining tool? Fuck only knows at this point. I think the whole world is starting to realise this man is capable of anything.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 27/02/2022 07:10

Ukrainian govt reporting they shot down a missile aimed at the dam north of Kyiv. This would flood left side of Kyiv, break other dams, with accumulate water possible damaging nuclear power station.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 27/02/2022 07:14

Sorry forgot to add, destroying dams is another war crime. He's getting one hell of a rap sheet.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 27/02/2022 07:20

There are reports that pro kremlin officials and MPs are actively and publicly calling for the war to stop. It looks like the cracks are now even appearing on the inside

Russians have entered Kharkiv Sad

The concern absolutely is that he's happy to commit war crime after war crime and make threat after threat.

He's always been an atrocious autocratic leader. He's always been a bit of a loose cannon with huge ideas.

Many leaders do. It takes a certain personality to lead a country and be so visual e on the world stage.

But Putin has another level. A scary level. But even for him this is a whole new level and that's the bit that scares me. Not knowing exactly how far he's prepared to go - but worse still - how mentally well he is to actually make a decision at the time it is to stop.

Metabigot · 27/02/2022 07:31

How would he actually stop, I mean psychologically rather than practically.

To pull out now, he gets massive egg on his face and his future is as a pariah.

I doubt someone like him would accept that as opposed to keep the dream alive that he's a liberator and conqueror.

Pretty hard to U turn now...

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 07:32

In a bit of hopeful news - Guardian and BVC have reported that the Snake Island defenders may be alive.

Motorina · 27/02/2022 07:32

I don't see that he can stop. Humiliating defeat would end his premiership.

MakeUsACuppa · 27/02/2022 07:38

Putin is a complete loose cannon, I can't see him giving up, the only way for him to stop is for someone to take him out.

Hopefully his inner circle can do something, surely they can see it's a hopeless task. The whole world is against them, except UAE, China and India.

I said the same to my DP when he suggested he might just get his troops to come home and carry on like nothings happened. Errrr well that’s not going to happen is it!? His whole identity is built around being strong and brave. The photo shoots of him bare chested on horses. He’s a tyrant. There’s no way he’ll just throw his hands up in the air and say ‘sorry guys’. It’s so or did.
WeAreTheHeroes · 27/02/2022 07:42

And even then, they abstained from the vote rather than supporting Russia. That has significance.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 07:42

Sadly that is true.

He started this because he felt cornered, if it starts dragging on for him it will get worse. A desperate dictator with nuclear power is not a good combination.

^This is what i am hoping, Putin may well be crazy but the command structures beneath him won't be... Once they see they are better off without Putin, he'll be gone.

Whether that would mean Ukraine returns to how it was or is split down the middle i do not know.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 27/02/2022 07:47

I wonder how the new, Easter European EU states feel about the mealy mouthed responses from the western EU states in the face of Russian agression? I wouldn’t be feeling much unity from a Germany that managed a few helmets and couldn’t cope with a couple of months of expensive gas before summer….

Agree that it is do or die for Putin. I can only hope one of his close circle sees a) the writing on the wall and b) an opportunity and assassinates him.

MattHancocksPrivateNurse · 27/02/2022 07:56

I feel so proud of how well the Ukrainians are doing (stupid as it’s literally nothing to do with me) and I’m so hopeful they continue to fight them off.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 08:03

Zelensky has put a call out on his social media accounts appealing for overseas fighters to come and join an International Legion.
