@Gingerwarthog

Zelensky has put a call out on his social media accounts appealing for overseas fighters to come and join an International Legion.
I was talking about this with DP. How would this work? Fly into a different country and come across the border? Ir do you think he’s hoping the men from Poland and neighbouring Eastern European countries will realise he’s coming for them next and join him?

And that man is a tucking hero.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 08:17

*fucking!!!!!

Alexandra2001 · 27/02/2022 08:18

@DazzlePaintedBattlePants It was some ex Soviet states that didn't want harsher sanctions.
Its also very easy to call for tough sanctions, safe in the knowledge they wont hurt you - gas isn't just used for heating but you knew that? or refuse to take in Ukrainian refugees whilst shouting from upon high "EU You must do more!"

I would imagine that they are very glad they are in the EU, especially as they deal with what will probably be millions of people moving from east to west.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 08:24

Nobody - I don't know. He stresses on his account that it is legal for volunteers to do so and the Ukrainians will set up a Legion.
I thought, maybe like you, that this was aimed at Poles, Moldovans, guys from the Baltic states.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 08:26

Totally agree - he is a hero - more presence than Putin.
One Russian who heard his broadcast to the Russian people ( earlier in the week, asking for their support) reportedly said it had been a long time since anyone had spoken 'with such love' to the ordinary Russian people.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 27/02/2022 08:27

Putin offers talks, and Zelenskyy on 'brutal' night.

I hope he tells them to go fuck themselves. They’re trying to lure him into Belarus.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 08:45

He's confirmed he's not going to Belarus.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 08:47

I’m enjoying Elon Musks involvement re. the internet. Gives me some faith that more is happening than just people sitting and watching.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 08:47

Putin has threatened possible nuclear retaliation for any NATO countries sending troops in to assist the Ukrainians. How would they be able to know who they're fighting if individual fighters go in to assist the Ukrainian army though?

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 27/02/2022 08:50

I cant believe how amazing Zelenskyy has been. No wonder people want to fight for their country with him leading.
I hope in years to come his name is remembered.

cakeorwine · 27/02/2022 08:51

Surely he's not nuts enough to press the button as that would most likely end up in MAD & surely he's not that deranged enough to wipe the whole world out

He can 'press the button' but it would take the military to actually carry out the order.

I wonder how much the military at the heart of this, the military who would actually launch the nuclear missiles, know and feel about the situation.

Would they do a first strike?

Olden · 27/02/2022 08:51

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation where did you read that?

Good for him!
BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 08:53

@Olden

I've been listening to the news on Times radio.

CovidCorvid · 27/02/2022 08:53

What is Musk doing?

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2022 08:55
@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation where did you read that?
It was in a Putin speech several days ago.

Igotjelly · 27/02/2022 08:55

@CovidCorvid using his satellites to help the Ukrainian people keep access to the internet

AFAIK Putin didn’t specifically mention nuclear retaliation in his speech midweek but he did threaten something like consequences as never seen in history if NATO interfered..

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 08:57

I wonder how much the military at the heart of this, the military who would actually launch the nuclear missiles, know and feel about the situation.

I was reading about this yesterday and, apparently, the people who launch the nuclear weapons only receive orders and don't have the information to actually know what they're doing. They hold regular drills and are not given any information about what the drills are for.

This is done to avoid someone going rogue and refusing to press 'the button'.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 08:59

@notimagain I think it's widely accepted that this could mean nuclear weapons. Due to putin's current state of mind you have to assume he could be including them in his threats. Why wouldn't he?

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 08:59

There are videos of captured/surrendered Russian soldiers and some of them aren’t even out of their teens. They look terrified.

Personally i suspect there is some truth in that they don’t know the entire situation they were forced into.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 08:59

Using Starlink satellites Covid. The Ukrainian minister for Technology asked for his help.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 09:00

Everything else has been seen in history.

Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 09:01

This utter mess will have many implications for decades to come.

I don't blame them for giving out guns to civilians but the wider problem is guns eventually falling into the wrong hands.

I'e the bataclan shooting with old guns refurbished from Bosnia etc.
