Not funny given the subject, time and a place.

No, the Russians 'spoiling' our politicians isn't funny at all.

But if you don't laugh, you cry.

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 19:35

@purplesequins

the sunflower oil in your kitchen is likely to be from russia. as is your flour. unless it's specified origin. as is the plantfood for your garden.

have a listen to farming today, friday episode where it's explained.

Thanks. I will listen to that too.
purplesequins · 26/02/2022 19:36

'Russian gas and oil' aren't normally on my shopping list anyway.

they are. they come into your house in form of electricity hand gas for the boiler/cooker.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 19:36

@Notonthestairs

China's President has urged Putin to get to the negotiating table. Which seems good. Although what is there to negotiate?
If China can help resolve this I’ll be grateful and relieved
NobodysGonnaKnow · 26/02/2022 19:38

Call me a cynic but I don’t believe a word China puts on the public stage. They will say one thing and be doing another. I’m absolutely sure they’ll be aiding this war in some way.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 26/02/2022 19:40

@FatFredsFriedEgg

anyway, i'll ask again, why is the Russian Ambassador still here?

Because he's spoiling us?

I’m enjoying your black humour 🤭

Ukraine produces more sunflower oil than Russia and definitely exports more. I think the same's true of wheat isn't it? I don't think we get much of either from Ukraine or Russia though. Maybe I'm wrong.

I only use grapeseed oil in my kitchen (because I like it, no other reason), I don't eat bread or flour (because I'm too fat) and I don't use purchased 'plantfood'.

And I've still not seen any actual brands mentioned, even though I should be avoiding them.

Likewise. I wouldn't trust China at all.
Notonthestairs · 26/02/2022 19:41

I've read China exports a lot to Ukraine so it's just China prioritising China. Maybe they waited to see if there would be a swift collapse and straightforward take over and then registered that it wasn't happening.

But no we have no idea what their motivations are.

About 4% I think? I've no choice over that anyway.
MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 19:42

That’s sad re China and lack of trust Sad

I hope they do help and somehow east and west try together

If you’re all right, which you may be, it’s a pity

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 19:46

Why would Putin negotiate? within a few days he will have what he wants and talk of protracted war is unlikely, how would europe cope with 10s of millions of refugees, which no one seems to be addressing or even considering, the vast majority of the population cannot fight no matter how many bombs molotovs they make.

If he does negotiate, he will want something for his murderous efforts.

No NATO or EU membership vs Withdrawal & the current President to leave the country.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 26/02/2022 19:46

I don’t think he will succeed. I honestly don’t.

Very interesting article from Lawrence Freedman, Emeritus Professor of War Studies at Kings Colkege London.
Some reasons here for hope.

We have family in Hong Kong. Yes it's difficult to trust China.

I don't think the Ukrainian president will ever be able to leave - even if he wants to.

i hope and pray you are right but unless the West helps the Ukrainians militarily, i dont see how he wont in the short term but he is also quite old, his successor may not be such a XXXX.

R4 was saying that Russian attack helicoptors are patrolling the borders for the very scenario in which we try to truck in weapons.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 19:52

We are putting in weapons?

Good call, I actually meant to post this earlier! I'd encourage everyone to read it before giving up hope.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 26/02/2022 19:55

Things are starting to happen. Germany is arming a country at war for the first time since WW2 defying their own laws. It has also agreed to allow Swift sanctions. These countries are starting to feel the anti war sentiment of their people. There’s no appetite for it. I think the pandemic has made us all weary and angry. We’ve had enough and the politicians know it.

It's a very large country with a lot of border. The resistance in France etc. were supplied despite being under full occupation.

Ukraine borders Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania (all NATO) there is no way Russia can patrol all those borders.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 19:57

But we know that weapons are going in don’t we?

dreamingbohemian · 26/02/2022 19:57

China is apparently getting nervous that they will get sucked into the sanctions against Russia (because of how much business they do together).

The Chinese economy is already a bit vulnerable at the moment so they will want to avoid any shocks.

TheVanguardSix · 26/02/2022 19:59

If China can help resolve this I’ll be grateful and relieved

China will be Russia’s cavalry coming over the hill once those western sanctions hit.
