hopeful
No that would be good if true and they can disrupt those communications.

Just listened to a group of Russians explaining to a group of friends how all thd images of Ukraine in the uk press have been doctored (out for lunch in central London which is very very Russian heavy this week)^

I have had a similar experience online. A Russian work-related contact had a very different version of the Snake Island incident and blame for radiation risks from the advance from Belarus.

For those asking about Russians protesting:

It takes bravery. There are those who oppose Putin behind closed doors and those who stick their necks out at risk to their wellbeing.

Putin has support.

There are those who don't support Putin but support the Motherland. It was interesting to see a Communist Deputy peel off and say this isn't what we backed in the Duma.

Many people just try to get on with life, without engaging politically.

'Russian Vodka' around here is mainly from Scotland or Warrington I think.
There are some big Russian brands that can easily be avoided. Russia exports a huge amount of wheat to Europe.

Sadly, they export a huge amount of natural products, minerals, oil and gas which the world needs. They are rich in Palladium. That is why Russia really wants the Ukraine for the mineral and gas deposits and being a huge supplier of wheat.

Ncwinc · 26/02/2022 19:10

So many brave people. The Ukrainian leader, the soldiers who have died defending their own territory and those Russian citizens who have taken to the streets to protest Putin’s actions knowing what will happen to them.

BronwenFrideswide · 26/02/2022 19:12

@Ncwinc

’You really believe a madman like that will care?’

I don’t think that anyone becomes or stays leader of a country without caring what the people in that country think about them - even if it’s just that the people better keep their mouths shut or they’ll be killed. It’s important to him to be seen to be in control.

Putin like every other meglomaniac dictator is extremely vain, he wants to be worshipped by his people as if he is a God and that is the image he wants and needs to project worldwide, people saying 'No' to that are against the script and therefore must be eradicated.

The people demonstrating in Russia are incredibly brave, the Russians supporting Ukraine who are outside Russia are also brave Putin's vengeance is far reaching.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 19:12

I mean some British men did it in the Spanish civil war. They volunteered to go.

Don't think you can put on a military unit though, some weird laws about not being able to join a foreign army, but you can be a militant.

I don't think there's an issue unless we've decided to class it a terrorist organisation. That may just be my assumption though.

I remember drawing a mental parallel between my DGF going to Spain to fight the fascists and British muslims travelling to fight somewhere. Syria was it? Depending on which faction they joined it was either ignored or they were terrorists.

DGF used a nom de guerre to avoid prosecution on his return.

I see the Russian owner of Chelsea football club has handed over control of Chelsea before it's shut down due to Russian ownership! He is a friend of Putin and realises the anti Russian sentiment at last.

His daughter's spoken out against the invasion I believe.
FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 19:16

There are some big Russian brands that can easily be avoided.

So I'm not buying a Lada for the foreseeable future.

Maybe it's just due to my small life but I genuinely can't think of a Russian brand that I've ever bought.

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 19:24

Russia is an exporter of raw materials that we use in manufacturing and household goods.
so whilst we can boycott the Lada or the Vodka, if you have a plumber out, the copper may come from Russia.

anyway, i'll ask again, why is the Russian Ambassador still here?

Your pension fund/investments etc probably have Russian assets. Russian gas (difficult or almost impossible to avoid), Russian oil. 60%of it's money is from those. Russian mineral deposits. Very difficult to avoid. Russian money
FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 19:25

Because he's spoiling us?

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 19:26

@workisnotawolf

Lots of large international law firms have offices in Moscow, for example, Freshfields, Baker & McKenzie, Clifford Chance etc. Are these Moscow law firms going to continue providing advice? Surely they all talk directly to the London or US office, if so, and everyone there will know what is going on and they will have close links to Russian government too. Is Russia closing all these things down? I doubt they will have time to. If every person in UK or US emails their Russian contacts with international news surely the Russian government cannot intercept it all?
I’d love to know more from companies like this and big four as to what the comms are like and generally what is being said

Exactly.
They probably have gained in their investments and pensions with the growth of oil and gas prices from the Russian companies. The natural commodities from Russia are vast. Huge minerals sold to the rest of the world.

Abramovich has passed Chelsea over to trustees. The cynic in me suggests this is to save the club brand. No mention of Ukraine that I can see in his statement.

Just in time for cup final.

so a loophole round sanctions, pass them over to a charitable trust, take it back or sell off as n when.

All my funds are in 'sustainable' and 'ethical' investments. I'm a bit dismayed at how that seems to mean Facebook, Google and Pharma but there's nothing Russian in there as far as I can see.

I'd still like to know what these Russian brands are that I should be avoiding. 'Russian gas and oil' aren't normally on my shopping list anyway.

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 19:30

FatFred - they export palladium - used in the manufacture of catalytic converters. It's hidden but necessary stuff (such as copper etc in plumbing).

Not funny given the subject, time and a place.

@Alexandra2001 of course. Feel silly I hadn't clocked that.

purplesequins · 26/02/2022 19:33

the sunflower oil in your kitchen is likely to be from russia. as is your flour. unless it's specified origin.
as is the plantfood for your garden.

have a listen to farming today, friday episode where it's explained.

Notonthestairs · 26/02/2022 19:33

China's President has urged Putin to get to the negotiating table. Which seems good. Although what is there to negotiate?

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 19:34

No, you can't I know - but it's just to explain how reliant we are on Russian products - even if those are not branded.
