Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:05

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

@Susu49

So many snippy posts on MN but I love that no one has piled on for getting maths wrong Smile So unlike the school I went to growing up!!

And I'm so pleased it worked out well for you op Star

It's quite normal to accept poor mathematics as an almost funny thing but how often do people get jumped on for errors in grammar or spelling?
notbloodylikely · 09/02/2022 19:09

@SparkleSpangle

Decimal points are a bunch of pricks.
This also made me laugh a lot!
Soulstirring · 09/02/2022 19:32

@Hellrow I feel you and sympathise. I spent the weekend crying about missing a work deadline but had read 3/2 instead of 3/3

Glad its a happier and less painful ending for you.

8.96 x 12402 ÷ 100 (which brings pence to pounds and pence)
That's how I calculate my gas and electricity bills...on my phone, naturally. 😆

Mybestyear · 09/02/2022 19:40

@wellstopdoingitthen

What are you going to spend the extra £900 on? Smile
Lol.
Fairfatandforty · 09/02/2022 19:51

Aww, sending a massive hug to you. And phew!! xx

Hellrow · 09/02/2022 19:53

@Shona52

I think I know what you might have done when calculating the maths.

If you put 8.96 x 12402 you get 111,121.92

(This represents £8.96)

But you should have put it in as

0.896 x 12402 = 1,111.2192

So it will be a bill of £1,111.22

That would have been a nasty shock but least you know it's not correct and can have a glass of wine and chill Wine

I kept doing 8.96 x 12402 then dividing by 10 to turn it from pound to penny.. or so I thought. I don't know. I failed GCSE maths if you couldn't tell..

As it was a while ago are you now paying interest on the amount owed? Have they handed the debt over to a debt recovery company if so each day you ignore the debt your adding more money & misery to the balance; contact them explain your husband is a dick head & that you want to work with them to clear the debt but that you just do not have that balance as disposable funds & needs to arrange a payment plan; then send the old man out earning extra money any which way he can, car washing; delivering pizza; selling his body for medical science 😂 his error his way to pay 😂😂😂😂

Hellrow · 09/02/2022 19:55

@Oscarsdaddy

This ain’t gonna help but if the extra cost was going to be £2500 over the three years if you took that option then as it’s less than half that at £1100 then your DH was right to do it from the start.
Yup he was exactly right he expected it to be around £1500 so he's had that much put aside ready, I'm just an idiot who thought he'd underestimated by £10k Grin

@Hellrow

That's where you went wrong. There are 100 pence to a pound so you needed to divide by 100, not 10.

Decimals (and fractions ) catch a lot of people out.

DerAlteMann · 09/02/2022 21:04

Whatever the correct figure, it's convinced me that leasing a car is not for me.

Susu49 · 09/02/2022 21:18

@JudgeJ
Good point. Do mathematicians find simple numerical mistakes as irritating as well-read types find grammatical errors?

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 09/02/2022 21:45

What a swizz from the lease company though. If you roughly knew what mileage you’d do each year you could probably work out what it might cost. Would be no good for me, I’m doing about 17k now I’m doing the high school run. The car gets trashed on the country lanes too.

When I did the maths as I'll admit I'm basic level,

I did 12402 x 0.0896 = 1,111.2

Smilelove this. Declan Malcolm (Dec Mal) or definitely Myles. I love this whole thread. The relief for us all reading it. Personally, I would never have realised and all I read was the horror of the £11000 bill so I was made up for you to realise it was only £1100.
