Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

Oh my bloody god I'm an idiot who can't do basic maths. What a bloody relief. Yes letter said what mileage was included and excess cost and to be paid within 30 days. I've been crying over this for an hour!!!
Yes, but look on the dark side: your husband was right. Grin

Ah, excellent, missed the update.

Rosebuud · 08/02/2022 17:25

I hope you didn’t tell him he was wrong 😂

This is such an intensely relatable post, it's made me beam with relief on your behalf. Absolutely something I would do too.

Go and pour yourself a glass of wine (and maybe one for your husband as well!). The relief is almost worth the heart-stopping panic.

LadyCatStark · 08/02/2022 17:29

Glad you posted and it’s not as bad as you thought 😮‍💨.

Phew! That's a really unusually high cost for excess mile. Just checked my agreement and its 0.8p a mile.
Dasher789 · 08/02/2022 17:30

Good news op :)

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:31

Ah bless you OP! I'm sure we have all done similar at some point, at least it's better and not worse than you thought.
Gazelda · 08/02/2022 17:33

Wow, what a rollercoaster OP! I grinned when I saw your update, feel irrationally chuffed for a complete stranger.

LaLaLouella · 08/02/2022 17:33

Leftbutcameback · 08/02/2022 17:34

So he really was right about the excess costing less than buying the mileage up front?! How annoying! Hope you’re having that glass of wine now OP

gluenotsoup · 08/02/2022 17:34

Aw, OP, go and have a glass of wine and an early night 😂.
If it makes you feel better, I had to spend ages today trying to poke my cash card out of the petrol pump pay thingy because I shoved it up the slot where the receipt comes out rather than in the card slot. 😂

FatLabrador · 08/02/2022 17:38

Haha this is the sort of thing I would do! Glad it worked out well Gin

SleepTheEnemyOfDreams · 08/02/2022 17:38

Oh my love, you complete Wally! Never mind, alls well that ends well... go and have a glass of wine 🍷

Orchid876 · 08/02/2022 17:38

What I've learnt from this thread is that excess milage must vary massively from less than 1p a mile to over £10 a mile. Having never had a lease before, but now looking into it, that's useful information, thanks, I've never have realised that. And I'm glad it's good news for you OP!

MiddleParking · 08/02/2022 17:41

This is great Grin yay for you OP!

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:41

Very pregnant so no wine, think I owe dh a bottle though Grin

Yes, but look on the dark side: your husband was right

The horror!

I hate to rub it in OP, but you also have to factor in the higher charges you would probably paid if he had chosen a higher estimated mileage. As you said in your OP, you might have paid up to £2,500 more. So, painful though it is to admit it, he has actually saved you £1,400.

I hope that glass of wine is a large one Wink

MrsBungle · 08/02/2022 17:46

Oh bless you. Thank goodness!

Rodion · 08/02/2022 17:46

I felt the cold sweat horror on your behalf when I read the OP - so pleased for you that it's not that bad. Enjoy your moment of relief!

MazzleDazzle · 08/02/2022 17:49

Thank Christ OP.

We have a hire car (for the first time), don’t pay much notice to mileage and my heart fell when I saw this post!

Echobelly · 08/02/2022 17:50

I could have totally done something like that too - glad to hear the worst case scenario is off the table.

EarringsandLipstick · 08/02/2022 17:51

Love this thread! The awfulness of the £11k bill but the sweet relief of realising it was a mathematical error, all related to one little decimal point!
And then having to eat humble pie to DH!

Glad it's all worked out OP

TheRemotePart · 08/02/2022 17:51

Still, you shock both agree on stuff like this in future. Especially if you have joint finances - you told him it wasn’t enough , and you were right
Still make him cut back for the grand!
I’m so pleased he hasn’t skinted you both!
