Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:05

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

🤣🤣 so for once on mn a dh was infact correct !

This made me smile, this is the exact type of panic i get into by working something out wrong ! Happy for you it’s worked out ok 👍

Changemaname1 · 08/02/2022 22:54

H and your dps response is perfect Smile

Jux · 08/02/2022 23:07

babe, I'm so glad you're bad at maths is just the most perfect response your dh could possibly have come up with. Almost worth the trauma just for that ♥️

Result OP! What a relief for you. Lovely.

YouokHun · 08/02/2022 23:47

Decimal points; fiddly little fuckers. I love this thread and I love you @Hellrow. What has happened to you is what I would do; bugger up the maths and run in the wrong direction shrieking “YOU’VE cost ME eleven-billionty pounds!!!” And then have to eat humble pie. Even better that you’ve done all that on MN! Bet it’s the first time you’ve been relieved to have a c£1000 bill! Flowers

Somewhat OTT, do you mind if I ask what the pros and cons were to lease the vehicle in the first place?

I have considered it in the past to afford the vehicle I really would like to drive, and have a business to write the expense off on, but always worried about the bubble bit at the end, or paying all that money and not owning something at the end. I feel like I missed the point of it all somehow..

Topseyt · 09/02/2022 01:33

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

Maybe get involved in the finances instead of leaving it all to 'the man' and stop being such a drama queen.
Ummm! Maybe read the thread. 🤣🤣🤣

you have a winner of a DH OP.

At least you can blame hormones if you’re heavily pregnant Grin

@UKorNZdilemma I'm so glad my day to day dickheadishness is now recognisable across MN BlushGrin

I'm honestly a liability; I turn into Mr Bean every time I interact with humans. I had to see my GP for a blood pressure test last week and I forgot to change into a short-sleeved top beforehand. She went to grab my arm and I asked, "do you mind if I just take my top half off so you can get at my arm?" and she said, "if you want, but I'm just trying to measure your pulse" Blush I could have tried to make the situation less uncomfortable but I doubled down and said, "I suppose I should at least offer to buy you dinner first before I strip off".

What the fuck is wrong with me? My autism diagnosis only goes so far in explaining why I'm so awkward Grin

@amusedbush. That's what happens when you don't name change! I'm glad you don't!! FWIW I'm sure we'd be great friends IRL. Don't ever change!!

Catnipdelight · 09/02/2022 17:55

Aw bless you! I’m so relieved for you! 😹 that was an emotional rollercoaster.

Oscarsdaddy · 09/02/2022 17:59

This ain’t gonna help but if the extra cost was going to be £2500 over the three years if you took that option then as it’s less than half that at £1100 then your DH was right to do it from the start.

MrsLighthouse · 09/02/2022 18:03

Thank goodness ! Still a shock but manageable 🥰 maybe you can forgive him a teenie bit now ! I ALWAYS learn the hard way where money’s concerned 😟

Jeyesfluid · 09/02/2022 18:03
Grin

Glad it turned out ok op.

Moll2020 · 09/02/2022 18:06

I love a happy ending- what a relief for you x

Feeascotime · 09/02/2022 18:11

I'm so happy for you right now!!!!
Still a lot but not 11k.
Lesson learned - that's why we bought instead - the milage allowed was ridiculously low.

mumoftinyterrors · 09/02/2022 18:15

@Hellrow

Blush atleast he was nice about it..
At least it's a happy ending 😊
PinkPansies · 09/02/2022 18:16

Jesus op, before I read the updates and looked at the figures I felt sick myself!

The 0.8p to 8p difference is a very similar mistake to one my DH made a couple of years ago with something resulting in a £700 bill instead of £70 so it's something I can imagine DH doing!

Very pleased for you!

sallyfox · 09/02/2022 18:21

£1,111.22

LoisLane66 · 09/02/2022 18:21

1,111.22p. One thousand one hundred and eleven pounds and 22 pence.

Suzanne999 · 09/02/2022 18:33

I went over mileage but there was obviously a buyer for the car ( limited edition) so they waived the excess charge and collected the car very promptly. If it’s better for you to buy the car and either keep or sell, do that.

Susu49 · 09/02/2022 18:45

So many snippy posts on MN but I love that no one has piled on for getting maths wrong Smile So unlike the school I went to growing up!!

And I'm so pleased it worked out well for you op Star

wellstopdoingitthen · 09/02/2022 18:58

What are you going to spend the extra £900 on? Smile

Shona52 · 09/02/2022 19:04

I think I know what you might have done when calculating the maths.

If you put 8.96 x 12402 you get 111,121.92

(This represents £8.96)

But you should have put it in as

0.896 x 12402 = 1,111.2192

So it will be a bill of £1,111.22

That would have been a nasty shock but least you know it's not correct and can have a glass of wine and chill Wine
