Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:05

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

I’d wait and see how much three wheels are before you celebrate though.

My dh is motor trade so each time he gets a new staff car it’s “do not kerb it. Don’t come home if you do” . I put the wrong fuel in once, telling him it’s all part of the charm at 8:30am did not lighten the mood.

For future reference it’s cheaper to fix things yourself prior to returning them, we’ve never been charged for repairs but the customers literally destroy some cars and then complain they get billed for their dogs eating the back seat and parcel shelf in a £40k Mercedes’ that now needs major surgery to be sold on. The sense of entitlement never ceases to surprise me.

Mostlyjustrunning · 08/02/2022 19:57

@HalfwayCrook

No it won’t because it’s 0.8p per excess mile i.e 80p.
Well no
BotterMon · 08/02/2022 20:15

Aw he sounds lovely. So you actually saved £1500 by under estimating mileage.

This thread made me smile - so happy you got good outcome and baby brain is definitely a thing Grin

Good news you were wrong OP !

DS did a similar calculation when he got his first casual job. Was getting paid around £7 an hour and doing 15 hours a week so roughly £105 a week. He wanted to know how much a year but he multiplied 15 x 7 x 4 ie £420 a month, then multiplied the 420 by 52 (weeks) instead of 12 (months). Told me he’d be making nearly £22k a year - not bad for a 17 year old at school. His wee face when he realised it would be nearer £5k - he was gutted so unlike you, it was bad news for him!!

Tilltheend99 · 08/02/2022 20:16

I’m glad you don’t owe 11k but the car lease industry seems as dodgy as the ones where you rent say a £500 tv and end up paying double.

Everything is a scam these days

MummyShah369 · 08/02/2022 20:16

So seems you are actually better of with the 1.1k payment vs the 2.4k for the higher mileage good decision on DHs part huh

GiantKitten · 08/02/2022 20:18

@HalfwayCrook

.08p is less than 1p so it’s not that.
£0.08 = 8p - it’ll be that (mine is, roughly)

delilabell · 08/02/2022 20:32

I love this thread. @Hellrow you and your husband sound lovely.

namechangeanonymous · 08/02/2022 20:49

one thing to look at - On my first lease vehicle, I went over 100% of my mileage, calculated x per mile however as it was 100% over EVERY mile including those in the initial 100% doubled to something like 18p per mile that wasn't a nice surprise for me :(

JudgeJ · 08/02/2022 21:05

0.8p is most definitely not 80p, it's less than 1p. £0.80 is 80p, I once saw some cold meat advertised in Asda as 4.25p / pound, the person dealing with that counter couldn't see what was wrong but wouldn't let me have a pound of it for less than 4p.
JudgeJ · 08/02/2022 21:08

Nothing is ever 'my' fault, it's usually the banks or the government, taking personal responsibility for one's mistakes seems to have fallen out of fashion.

JudgeJ · 08/02/2022 21:10

of it for less than 4p.
Whoops, for less than 5p.

Not a scam at all, you're free not to take the deal, it's hardly the seller's fault if you can't do a simple calculation because the lower figure is so attractive.
allgettingtoomuch · 08/02/2022 21:14

Oh my god sounds like something I would do🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

itsgettingweird · 08/02/2022 21:17

Blueemeraldagain · 08/02/2022 21:38

MoFro · 08/02/2022 21:46

Love a happy ending! Great stuff OP!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 08/02/2022 21:51

Maybe get involved in the finances instead of leaving it all to 'the man' and stop being such a drama queen.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2022 21:51

Bless you

1100 not £11k

Hubby was right then 😂

Having leased a few cars, this is not true at all. Quite the opposite in fact; the costs of ownership are laid out very clearly for you and you are free to select your own annual mileage allowance from various options available, with the excess mileage cost always made every obvious on the contract. It couldn’t be more transparent in terms of ownership cost.

You’ve more chance of being scammed buying a used car and/or exposed to more risk. And I say that quite open and honestly as someone who’s family actually sells used cars.

blueshoes · 08/02/2022 22:38

Phew, glad to hear the happy ending, OP.

GuineaPigPosie · 08/02/2022 22:42

Incredible 🤣🤣

Rachie1973 · 08/02/2022 22:47

I love your DH response. How sweet is he???
