Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

194 replies

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:05

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

This is the thread I was talking about:

Why aren't we building home out at see? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4476168-Why-arent-we-building-home-out-at-see

MsFogi · 08/02/2022 18:21

Yay! A happy ending - well done MNers you really rock arithmetic!

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 18:21

It's actually turned out better than I thought, I thought we'd owe around £2k.. haven't found out the charges for me curbing 3 out of 4 wheels though so there's still time..

Very pregnant so no wine, think I owe dh a bottle though Grin
Ah bless you op! Blame the baby Grin
AdobeWanKenobi · 08/02/2022 18:23

@EngTech

Cheaper to actually buy the car?
You've not read the thread have you?
RishiRich · 08/02/2022 18:24

@gluenotsoup

Aw, OP, go and have a glass of wine and an early night 😂. If it makes you feel better, I had to spend ages today trying to poke my cash card out of the petrol pump pay thingy because I shoved it up the slot where the receipt comes out rather than in the card slot. 😂
Grin

Phew! What did your DH say OP? Had he taken your word for it and panicked too?

Itsalmostanaccessory · 08/02/2022 18:25

I've just seen that you're pregnant! That's baby brain for you. I run a business and I'm usually great with the numbers. Second pregnancy and I couldnt figure out the wholesale price of my new designs to save my life. It was like starting at a different language. I just couldn't wrap my mind around adding up! You're not alone, OP!

Faevern · 08/02/2022 18:27

@Hellrow cried for an hour? I bet your eyelashes are lovely and silky. Always look on the bright side.

JoanThursday · 08/02/2022 18:28

@SparkleSpangle

Decimal points are a bunch of pricks.
🤣 After a stupidly difficult day, these 7 words have made me feel instantly better.
luxright · 08/02/2022 18:28

Yay, I mean I would still be pissed off at the 1k loss but much better than 11.

labyrinthlaziness · 08/02/2022 18:29

Oh this is nice to hear, so glad for you!!

RB68 · 08/02/2022 18:32

Dont stress too much about the marks and dents or wheels - unless they are spectacularly bad they allow a bit of weear and tear and frankly the price of second hand cars have gone up with the shortage of chips so they are really not fussed as they are making their money at auction at the moement - we have had 2 go back and never had to pay a penny, even though one of them had a big scratch below the door line on one side (Hedge rash!!)

DoctorManhattan · 08/02/2022 18:32

Can mods rename this thread now to huge huge fuck up with maths?

Ikeptgoing · 08/02/2022 18:33

@Hellrow

Blush atleast he was nice about it..
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love his reply "Babe I'm so happy you're bad at maths.., then he calculates it for you..

Glad panic is over!

100problems · 08/02/2022 18:38

Oh God, it's even worse to have to admit you couldn't have been more wrong.

MsTSwift · 08/02/2022 18:40

Hope you are not ranting and raving at him 🙄. If so you can never make a car related mistake.

Choccy21 · 08/02/2022 18:43

I did think that was astronomical and couldn’t work out why it would be £11k.
He went a few thousand miles over his allowance, not much in 3 years really.
Glad it’s ok !

bevelino · 08/02/2022 18:45

@Hellrow

Oh my bloody god I'm an idiot who can't do basic maths. What a bloody relief. Yes letter said what mileage was included and excess cost and to be paid within 30 days. I've been crying over this for an hour!!!
Grin phew! you almost had me panicking on your behalf OP.
TomBradysLeftKneecap · 08/02/2022 18:47

I love this thread! This is exactly the kind of thing I would have done when pregnant, including the crying for an hour part. Although I'd have probably cried for another hour when I had to admit to DH I was wrong. Grin

kittensinthekitchen · 08/02/2022 18:48

Surely you should be pissed off that the lease company have sent you a bill for £11k in error??

Confused
amusedbush · 08/02/2022 18:48

This thread has made me feel so much better. I’m dyscalculiac af and decimals are the work of the devil.

Recently I was lecturing to final year undergraduates and I confidently announced that they should be aiming for 1 citation per 100 words of the essay, so 10% of the word count. I faltered as I saw a room of faces looking at me like Confused

Thankfully they laughed when I reassured them that I was qualified to teach them and I wouldn’t be anywhere near their finance modules Blush

Sideswiped · 08/02/2022 18:50

If it makes you feel any better, @Hellrow, not converting from pence to pounds is the most common mistake kids make in GCSE maths when working with bill.
You are far from alone. Smile

Dontbeamugallyourlifesucker · 08/02/2022 18:51

Bless you op pFlowers

FatOaf · 08/02/2022 18:52

this is a happy ending!

Blimey! We could all do with one of those.

Glad I looked in on this thread now.

Mydogmylife · 08/02/2022 18:55

@Hellrow

Very pregnant so no wine, think I owe dh a bottle though Grin
Way to make a complete arse of yourself!!! Lesson learned , check you facts thoroughly before you go off on one, can you imagine the furore if he'd been giving you a hard time ! We've all been there though, at least it had a happy ending
