Huge huge huge fuck up with lease car

194 replies

Hellrow · 08/02/2022 17:05

Dh got a lease car for us 3 years ago, he went for an annual mileage of 8000, we live in the sticks and drive long distances regularly I told him it would be nowhere near enough and he said the excess mileage was 0.8p a mile so less than a penny and it works out cheaper just to pay the excess mileage fee then it does to pay for more miles

Lease is up, we've gone over our allowance by 12402, and we've had a bill for excess mileage of over £11k! 11 fucking k. It was 8.96p per mile. He plucked this 0.8 number out of his arse and we now have to find £11k to pay for excess mileage when it would of only cost £2500k max if he'd paid for the right amount of mileage at the start.

We just can't afford it I'm so angry at him, it was all in his name so I didn't see the documents. I'm so so upset Sad

This is his to sort out. You say "we" can't afford it, but he has to deal with this out of his own pocket. What a tit!

You do know this will go down in mumsnet history...hello readers in 2029...waves

Glad it all worked out OP.
We had this the other way round last week. DH called me panicking because he had misread where the decimal point was. He even photographed the letter and sent it to me and was still convinced it was the higher amount. I'm blaming the fact we're both recovering from Covid because he's usually great with numbers Grin

UKorNZdilemma · 08/02/2022 19:18

@SparkleSpangle

Decimal points are a bunch of pricks.
Post of the thread 🤣🤣
GiantKitten · 08/02/2022 19:19

@HalfwayCrook

Phew! That's a really unusually high cost for excess mile. Just checked my agreement and its 0.8p a mile.

It’ll be 8p, not 0.8p (aka £0.08)

UKorNZdilemma · 08/02/2022 19:19

@SparkleSpangle. Post above was for you, obviousky

This is the thread I was talking about:

Why aren't we building home out at see? [[http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am]]iibeingunreasonable/4476168-Why-arent-we-building-home-out-at-see

I saw it, but haven't yet opened it! Didn't know if my brain could cope with the level of insanity
kittensinthekitchen · 08/02/2022 19:25

Sorry, am really confused.

Are you saying that lease company sent you a request for payment, but didn't tell you how much you had to pay?

Isn't that.... weird?

A little maybe, but they'll need to check it over before giving the final charges, this is more a heads up to bring your Big Credit Card.
UKorNZdilemma · 08/02/2022 19:32

@Hellrow

Baby brain!

Thank God you were wrong!!

Thank you for starting the thread! Lots of funny replies, enjoyed it more than any thread for ages!

Sorry you can't have a drink, I'll have an extra one for you! 🍹🍹

Runmybathforme · 08/02/2022 19:32

So glad you were wrong OP. I can feel your relief.

rubytubeytubes · 08/02/2022 19:35

This is definitely something that I would do!

HalfwayCrook · 08/02/2022 19:37

No it won’t because it’s 0.8p per excess mile i.e 80p.

SirGawain · 08/02/2022 19:40

@kittensinthekitchen

Surely you should be pissed off that the lease company have sent you a bill for £11k in error??

Confused

They didn't the OP miscalculated the figure herself!
AllOfUsAreDead · 08/02/2022 19:41

@Rodion

I felt the cold sweat horror on your behalf when I read the OP - so pleased for you that it's not that bad. Enjoy your moment of relief!
Same! But the bad side is her husband was right! She will never live this down. Grin
BoristalkedaboutBruno22 · 08/02/2022 19:45

Get the wheels fixed before you return the car, places will refurbish them for £80-90 a wheel

ThirdElephant · 08/02/2022 19:47

Easily done, OP. Glad it all worked out Smile

PeakyBlender · 08/02/2022 19:47

Best thread ever! Glad it's okay OP

Ronaldo2004 · 08/02/2022 19:52

Also if you’re planning on getting a replacement car is worth looking into part-ex. Garage will value car based on its condition, number of miles does come into it but reduction tends to be less than excess mileage charge. If you do it this way you don’t pay the charge as you’re not giving the car back.

ChateauMargaux · 08/02/2022 19:52

I think I need to read the rest of the responses for the humour factor.. but I love your husband's reply!! 'Babe, I am glad you are bad at maths!"

MotherOfChaos28 · 08/02/2022 19:53

Ah bless you OP, blame the baby brain. Although this is something I would do and I haven’t been pregnant for years. So glad for you to be wrong!

justustwoandmoo · 08/02/2022 19:53

@Hellrow

Blush atleast he was nice about it..
🤣🤣🤣 oh my gosh this made me laugh!! I'm absolutely TERRIBLE at maths and would make this sort of mistake very easily.

So glad it worked out x

cakeorwine · 08/02/2022 19:55

Glad it worked out.

It's a good GCSE question. You could get a 5 marker out of it.
Along with 'her husband says it will be £11,000" Is he right? You must show your working.
