Is there a thread anywhere regarding the ghislaine maxwell trial? I've searched and can't find one anywhere

OP posts:
Roussette · 29/12/2021 23:56

I have only just caught up with this as I've had people here
Pleased to hear the verdict, now off to read what I can about it

JacquelineCarlyle · 30/12/2021 00:09

Great news.

BelleHathor · 30/12/2021 00:53

Did not expect this, I believed the fix was already in with the very strange way the Trial proceeded.

Very happy for the victimsFlowers
There'll be some very nervous folk tonight (as they should be!). Good prosecutor's would use their leverage to get her to sing like bird!

Dearblossom · 30/12/2021 10:12

I bet someones sweating now.....

I was wondering where you were Roussette!! Grin

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 30/12/2021 10:51

Excellent news! Particularly as her and her legal team were so arrogant.

May she spend the rest of her life in prison and suffer until her last breath.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/12/2021 11:01

Just wondering if @Serenster or anyone else with actual legal knowledge is about?

I'd thought Ghislaine would sing for a shorter sentence, but now read that, in the US, plea bargains have to take place before the trial
So I'd love to know if there's any likelihood of her naming names now, or if it's too late for that?

Roussette · 30/12/2021 11:10

Puzzled ..... Honestly, I couldn't believe it when I got in bed and it flashed up on my Twitter! Totally gobsmacked that I'd missed it

Roussette · 30/12/2021 11:11

I'd thought Ghislaine would sing for a shorter sentence, but now read that, in the US, plea bargains have to take place before the trial

And would that be arrogance I wonder, thinking she'd get off...

guinnessguzzler · 30/12/2021 11:33

Great news for the victims and well done to the jury; they were clearly incredibly thorough.

guinnessguzzler · 30/12/2021 11:35

And I very much hope she starts to name names, unlikely though that may be.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/12/2021 11:50

would that be arrogance I wonder, thinking she'd get off...

God knows, but then I'm amazed all round, including that she got convicted

I'd have thought that singing for a shorter sentence was an obvious thing to do though, which is why I've asked for more detail on how it works. If she's not going to it raises the question of why, and I'm not sure the real answer to that would be attractive

Chocaholic9 · 30/12/2021 14:00

I've been following this story for a long time and I'm surprised she was found guilty.

I visited the Maxwell family website. I think they are deluded and in denial as to the true nature of their sister, who lived a double life... behaving appropriately with those who were within her own circle of family and friends, but who saw poor people as less than human. I think she called the poor girls 'trash' and said 'no one cares what happens to them'.

Ultimately she was undone by her own arrogance and entitlement. Used to getting what she wanted all these years, she assumed the trial would go the same way.

I've read about her difficult childhood and it's clear she was moulded into the person that she is by her father. Part of me feels sorry for her because of this, but then I was raised by a sociopath too, and I somehow managed to avoid committing any crimes. She must take responsibility regardless of what happened to her.

1concernedmummy · 30/12/2021 14:58

I don't think she will name names. Look what happened to Epstein. I just hope her sentence will reflect the severity of her crimes. There needs to be more justice in the world for women.

Motherdare · 30/12/2021 15:48

I don’t think she will sentence bargain actually. I think they’ll try to appeal on the grounds of an unfair trial - maybe that they couldn’t present their witnesses due to Covid etc. I don’t see it making much difference. With a different judge perhaps? Who knows? Bill Cosby walked free earlier this year due to a technicality. After that I actually think she’ll just do her time. I don’t foresee any grand unmasking of the great and good. It could work against her. Currently she is “only” accused of abusing 4 women. If she talks, many more may come to light and more sordid details of her role in it all.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/12/2021 15:51

I don't think she will name names. Look what happened to Epstein

But surely he committed suicide? After all that's what the official reports said, and they must be true mustn't they ... ? Wink Grin

Roussette · 30/12/2021 16:09

chocaholic I agree. The whole family are entitled and believe themselves to be above the law. Look how Ian and Kevin got off the fraud charges after their father embezzled all the employees pension funds, £900M whilst they worked for him.

Vile family.

upinaballoon · 30/12/2021 17:29

I know the news reports use words like "could" and "lifetime in jail" and "up to" and "forty years", but last night Alan Ders--- was interviewed, the one whose name I cannot spell offhand, but he has been named by Virginia I think, and he said he thought the sentence would be in the teens because it would follow precedences for other similar cases. Of course he might have all sorts of agendas of his personal own rather than just those of a lawyer. However, having heard that, I won't be astonished if it is more like eighteen years than eighty. Like everyone else, I will wait and watch future developments.

The BBC has released a statement regarding Dershowitz
www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-59828961

Mr Dershowitz used to be a lawyer for Epstein and has himself been accused of sexual abuse by one of the accusers.

He denies the accusation. But the BBC said he was not "an impartial analyst".

Roussette · 30/12/2021 17:56

What the BBC did there was awul. Surely surely they know who Dershowitz is, and his connections to both JE and VG? He is anything but impartial, and his 'interview' if you can call it that... was just one long rant about VG.

There has been outrage about it, with well known names both here in the UK and in the US appalled. The BBC news interviewer totally lost his way and was like a rabbit in the headlights. And the researcher who booked him for this should be sacked.
No impartiality and he was intent on protecting both himself and PA. The BBC just called him 'a constitutional lawyer'.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 30/12/2021 18:43

I was really surprised at the verdict - pleased but surprised. Quite often people in these positions get away. The women were very brave to come out as whilst they have justice (hopefully full) they and their own families still have to live with the ramifications of it all.
I also wonder how GM wider family come to terms with this after hearing the detail of what she did to the girls and what she was up to during that period. For example her female cousins / nieces and in-laws.

Roussette · 30/12/2021 18:45

Two sisters and a brother were in court supporting her. And the family have issued a statement saying they are appealing and she will be vindicated.

They would, wouldn' t they?

cocktailclub · 30/12/2021 19:00

I hope everyone else involved is now under the spotlight. It wasn't just Epstein that she supplied girls for, many other prominent figures were hanging around him and taking part in holidays on his island. I hope they don't get away with it. That would be a really significant step forward, not just going after a woman who enabled it all but the men who benefited and should have known better.

derxa · 30/12/2021 19:44

I think it's rather admirable
Roussette · 30/12/2021 20:16

Admirable?

What...that the family are supporting a convicted sex trafficker? Confused
