my number one request which was always 'horse'

I love that! I love how kids, like the OP's Rockefeller protege here, ask for the horse, expect the horse, anticipate the horse (or diamonds), but actually, on Christmas morning, they never fall apart and collapse into a pile of tears because there's no horse under the tree (ok, maybe the rare kid does... but they've got issues! ).

The phone was a hand-me-down from a family member when they upgraded (to replace his £10 pay as you go) and I told them then it was stupid because he wouldn't use it. However £500 seems fairly average for a few year old 'good' phone his peers having similar so the point is he isn't getting mocked because he doesn't have a decent phone.

I'm honestly quite surprised yous lot seem to be suggesting your teenagers DONT have decent smartphones because I don't know any that don't.

And god forbid someone gifted someone some not crazy expensive diamonds for Xmas once that I still have 20 years later - my point is diamonds arent always expensive, people here are talking about buying trainers that cost more than my set ffs.

Really is a stretch to claim its bragging.

I’m not being miserable I’m very happy to buy him all sorts but
he would hate to receive something he didn’t want. I mean actually hate it, it would ruin his day.

(I will also put cash in his bank account but they will be the only presents he has to open unless he comes up with some other ideas)

I've told this story before, but when my twin nephews were about 5ish, one asked for a mini snooker table (My DB had been watching it on the tv) and the other wanted a pair of white gloves as he wanted to be the man that polished the balls and put them back!

It was actually harder to source the gloves than the table as this would be in the early 80s and pre internet. They did manage though and also got them fancy waistcoats and bow ties. best Christmas ever!

Oh god my partner (a middle-aged software developer) is also obsessed with specific mechanical keyboards and the specific little switches that go under each key and he will literally watch an hour of youtube videos on this shit. While I'm over here shaking biscuit crumbs out of this black plastic keyboard I got for a tenner from Asda when the "W" stopped working on my last one.

Anyway your kid sounds great

I had no idea there were quite so many options when it comes to mechanical keyboards, then my teens got obsessed with them last year, and we spent hours in Best Buy testing them all so DS could get exactly the right one that makes exactly the right sort of 'click'.

My friend and I end up laughing at our efforts to save £1 on our weekly shop etc and then happily spending £150 on a clicky keyboard for a DC after researching red/blue/brown switches. DS1 has one with individually adjustable switches.

Well, some food for thought. Got to love a trier!
