Things I learned too late in life

No one anywhere has ever had their life improved by me wearing high heels. I now wear comfy shoes for every occasion and life is immeasurably better. I can move quicker, get more done in a day and never miss any fun because my feet hurt or I don't have suitable footwear. I don't know what on earth possessed me for so long. Grin

What's yours?

That other people's behaviour towards you is nothing to do with you and everything to do with how they feel about themselves.

Afonavon · 07/11/2021 16:11

That children provide more worry than happiness. It is the elephant in the room, and I wish that I knew this before I had children.

That other’s opinions of you are not as important as your own of yourself. Don’t impress anyone except yourself!

Know how to repel unwanted attention with actions and words rather than over eating to make myself unattractive and hopefully less of a target.

If you hate your uni course listen to yourself, leave and switch courses instead of sticking it out, but quiting right at the bloody end before finals.

MasterGland · 07/11/2021 16:15

That I don't care what people think about me.
The importance of rituals.
That I should have applied for veterinary school.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 07/11/2021 16:23

That's it's honestly more important to be happy than to try and have it all.
I've cut back my hours and changed my job.
I earn enough for what I need and I'm happy with that

beigebrownblue · 07/11/2021 16:29

a) don't get married and
b) don't share a bank account with a man or anyone else for that matter.

ESGdance · 07/11/2021 16:34

That when you feel confused or unsettled about someone or something it’s a red flag.

And that’s more than enough to step right back and take stock because our gut is our early warning smoke detector but we are socialised to #BeKind and our head overrides us and we get drawn into becoming involved with difficult people. Learn to swerve.

HideousKinky · 07/11/2021 16:35

There's a saying:
At 20 you worry about what people think of you.
At 40 you no longer care.
And at 60 you realise they were never thinking about you in the first place!

BruiserWoods · 07/11/2021 16:38

what kind of account gives you compound interest on your savings

gunnersgold · 07/11/2021 16:39

That insecure women are toxic !

I wish I had known that some women just hate you if you are happy in your own skin .. just because they are so insecure and apparently that's your fault ! 🙄🙄

BruiserWoods · 07/11/2021 16:39

@stopblowingyournose

They you are more than your parents opinion of you.
So true, my parents perception of me is so off=base but If I try and correct that, or just be me, they react like it's a massive act of aggressions against them.

and they will be lovely to gorgeous women who can validate them. They wouldn't dare risk social exclusion by being nasty to somebody popular and beautiful. They will aim to exclude the ordinary looking but well-liked woman. this has happened to me a couple of times. i have wondered 'how on earth could i be the target for somebody's jealousy?'
thepeopleversuswork · 07/11/2021 16:44

Don't expend energy worrying about whether people like you or not.

Some will, some won't and you have very little influence to change the minds of those who don't. The ones who like you are the only ones who matter. And you have a much better chance of being liked if you act like you don't give a shit anyway.

I wish someone had taught me this as a teenager. I could have avoided so much damaging self-doubt.

LanaDelBoy · 07/11/2021 16:44

"Fertility" isn't always something that's a measurable aspect of yourself or your partner. It is also basically whether you and your partner get pregnant while actively ttc within a set period of time (like a year).

So 'fertile' people or those who don't have a specific reason to think themselves infertile, or not fertile enough, can be 'infertile'. It's a bit of a weird area.

Secondly - exercise can just be walking around, being active. It makes a huge difference doing that instead of sitting on your arse (which I do enjoy). You don't need to commit to classes, be a mountain biker or have gym membership to keep a decent level of fitness, although it's great if you discover you enjoy those things despite never having 'been sporty'....

thepeopleversuswork · 07/11/2021 16:44

This.

And also: cohabitation is VASTLY over-rated. Nine times out of ten you'll be much happier living alone.

Benjispruce5 · 07/11/2021 16:46

I agree but I do love a high heel and what it does for my shortish legs.

ancientgran · 07/11/2021 16:46

Most of the stuff I've worried about wasn't worth worrying about.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/11/2021 16:46

few more:

  • if it's not 100% "yes" then it's a "no"
  • what Sunk Cost Fallacy is

and from watching 30 Rock:

  • Avanti domani is Spanish for "remember your mother"
  • nothing is impossible unless you are a dinosaur
  • the only egg-laying land mammal is the Easter Bunny
  • never go with a hippie to a second location
  • live every week like Shark Week
Any fans out there? I love this show so much I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant!🤣🤣🤣

Pregnant TV SHOW?
  • don't neglect working on your night cheese
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 07/11/2021 16:48

You need to have a clear threshold for walking away otherwise you can waste years of your life that will not help anyone and will sap your own resources.

LanaDelBoy · 07/11/2021 16:49
  • Don't leave your Leap Day William plans til the last minute
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/11/2021 16:49

@LanaDelBoy

your hair is your head suit

YouChump · 07/11/2021 16:49

Don't use your teeth as tools
Don't remove you lenses after chopping chilli
You don't need to be the perfect mum, just good enough
Don't wash cashmere in the machine, ever.
Get some daylight and a bit of exercise every single day

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 07/11/2021 16:52

@OakPine
People you work with are not your friends, even if they are friendly and you go out socialising with them.
A significant proportion of them would not piss on you if you were on fire.

Sadly, that is so true.

gingerbin · 07/11/2021 16:53

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba, don't mind me. Just working on my night cheese!

stillcrazyafterall · 07/11/2021 16:54

A decent company won't fire you for telling the truth. Do it politely but don't allow yourself to be walked over.
