Things I learned too late in life

No one anywhere has ever had their life improved by me wearing high heels. I now wear comfy shoes for every occasion and life is immeasurably better. I can move quicker, get more done in a day and never miss any fun because my feet hurt or I don't have suitable footwear. I don't know what on earth possessed me for so long. Grin

What's yours?

@secretbookcase

Too late now to do much about anything.

@MrsTidyHouse - it is never too late. As long as you are still alive, you can take some chances, do the things you longed to do but put off. Never ever too late to get onto the right path.

Very true, @secretbookcase Flowers

In fact that might be just about the most important lesson I ever learned (late in life, of course 😋)!

Good luck @MrsTidyHouse. Let your "house" be less "tidy" for a while...

Don’t judge people by their appearance. A good person with a kind heart is worth a hundred good-looking people. This goes particularly with regard to choosing a life partner.

julieca · 08/11/2021 14:57

Agree that marriage should make your life easier. Life can be so hard, so many shit things can happen. Your marriage should be a strength to help you deal with those things and enjoy the good times. But for too many people their marriage makes their life harder.
Also that your bosses don't really care about you. Dont work yourself to the bone. Do what you need to do to have a job and be promoted, but put yourself first always. I have learned this, but too late for some jobs.

@TigerRed
Curious what you meant by this ?

"Social media has done to Boomers what they warned us TV would do to us... "

Presumably make them credulous, compliant, lacking independent thought and easily led…? And goggling at their screens all the time, which going by my parents is leaving them with more “square eyes” than they ever warned us we’d get as kids. Grin

AngelinaFibres "This. I was a people/parent pleaser. So stupid to recreate someone else's life to gain their approval."

That's so true and so many people do. When I read Bronnie Ware's book, 'The Top Five Regrets of the Dying' the number one regret was, 'I wish I'd led the life I wanted to live and not the life other people wanted me to live.'

Do not let anyone judge you for being you
Do not waste so much time fretting about men. Concentrate on you.

FontSnob · 08/11/2021 17:23

Diets don’t work, you’ll always end up fatter in the end.

Iziz · 08/11/2021 17:40

ThistleTits · 08/11/2021 17:46

@GoodnightGrandma

When I was in my 40’s I didn’t realise how old I would feel in my 50’s.
Me too ^ absolutely shocked me.
Bunchymcbunchface · 08/11/2021 17:46

Snowboarding

52andblue · 08/11/2021 17:50

@threebeforetwo

You can’t control what anyone else does but you can decide how you will respond to their actions.
Yes. I am still learning this, rather late on. But it's SOOOO important.
KellyanneConway · 08/11/2021 17:54

The effort involved in owning a dog pays back every penny spent and every second of effort a million fold in friendship and good health.

Request:
Please can someone start a thread on compound interest? I've just googled it and I don't know how it works in real life. Why is it so good to know about it? Can you get compound interest savings? Will I be able to retire early if I harness it?

amethystbell · 08/11/2021 17:55

Always make the choice that gives you more options.

Such a simple concept.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/11/2021 17:58

That it’s ok to be single. That you can be a “proper” family even without a man, and you do not need one to complete you.
That your relationship disasters have long reaching consequences, especially for your children - make sure things are solid before even thinking about having a baby.
Who cares if it isn’t cool to be smart?! Ignore the bullies, stay in school, make something of yourself - twenty years later they won’t even remember you, so don’t let them destroy your chances.
A relationship with an older guy isn’t a means to bolster your self esteem, it just means he’s a predator.

Londoncallingme · 08/11/2021 17:58

Get health insurance

calvados · 08/11/2021 17:59

That people will only remember how you made them feel … not what you looked like nor your achievements

Diian · 08/11/2021 17:59

"The bigger your career gets, the less of a life you will have." Quote by Adele. So true.

WickedWitchOfTheTrent · 08/11/2021 18:00

Pay a small amount into a pension as soon as you start earning

No one gives a shit if you have designer bags, watches etc in fact most people think you're wearing a fake anyway

Don't invest in friendships that don't make you feel good

If it's not going to be important in 5 years time it's not worth worrying about now

entropynow · 08/11/2021 18:03

@GoodnightGrandma

Opposite. I didn't realise how young I'd feel at 60...
caringcarer · 08/11/2021 18:07

Being kind is more important than great looks. If I had known that at 22 I would not have married first husband. I did not make same mistake second time. Giving gifts gives me more pleasure than receiving gifts. I love to give my children and dgc little gifts. Their happy faces mean every to me. As you get older you need less. Less clothes, less make up, just less stuff and still feel content. Never wear tight shoes or tight knickers, go for comfort now.

Pliudev · 08/11/2021 18:12

That money really matters. Creativity is fine but without money it's hard to be that creative. I think they teach that in art schools now. I just wish they had when I was there.

redfuchsia · 08/11/2021 18:13

I'd enjoy life more without alcohol
