Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

Oh Mortimer is cute. I could see that becoming a cult fave.

CallMeRisley · 23/09/2021 18:30

As a primary school teacher, that just out of the ones mentioned so far there are many Violets, a Kevin, a Mona and I know a toddler Vera.
I have to say I don’t think there are any names that couldn’t potentially make a come back other than ones with very negative connotations such as Adolf (as mentioned by PP), Myra (Hindley).

I'd have had a guess and said names like Audrey and Arthur as they're god awful imo and should have never come back but they're so popular now so what do I know 😂

I do know a 12 year old Clive. I mean, who looks at a lovely little baby and says, yeah Clive suits him.

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

Violet is back! I have one and was surprised how popular it is!

I think all names will make a come back eventually. And it probably depends on your region as well. Craig isn’t that uncommon where I am (more wee Craig’s than Arthur’s , for example) but I couldn’t believe it when I heard people starting to use the names Peggy and Effie for babies. To me they’re so old fashioned, but 3 years ago they were getting raved about on the baby names board, and there are a few in nursery with my DC.

Clymene · 23/09/2021 18:39

They will come back. All the Victorian names the post war parents avoided are now back in fashion and I'm sure all those names like Gary, Barbara, Sandra etc will come back round again

DaffyDaffy · 23/09/2021 18:40

Loads of these are actually really great names! I also think that they will become the names of our grandchildren.

Susannahmoody · 23/09/2021 18:40

Kevin

ScrambledSmegs · 23/09/2021 18:43

Gaylord. To be fair I think it was more popular in America, but I suspect that one is gone for good, due to it being used as an insult.

Similarly, my DM and DGM between them knew several women called Gaye. That one has also probably gone for good too.

Unless the name causes offence or is unusual and intrinsically linked to something terrible I wouldn't write it off altogether. There was a child called Keith in my DC's school. He was pretty cool.

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet

I don’t think there’s been a single baby named Gary since 1992 or something. So it’s effectively been out of favour for 30 years. I think Barry will die a death too.
But that’s only because they were in vogue too recently — when the name cycle turns a bit further and the Garys, Keiths, Sharons, Tracys, Brians, Nigels and Barrys die off, I’m sure they’ll be back, and those of us still alive to remember them will be as baffled/appalled as the people who remembered the last period of Arthurs, Stanleys, Elsies, Mabels etc.

I work with the parent of a Violet. I don't think it is even that unusual
