Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

Ethel

I think the names that are unlikely to come back will be the ina type names where they took the fathers name and shoved ina on the end of it like Hughina or Tomina. It used to be a really popular way to name girls in Scotland

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 19:36

I knew there was a website that graphed names over time, and I've just found it again:

www.babynamewizard.com/voyager

Funny how fashions come and go. All names along the lines of Christina, Kristen, Kirsten, Crystal etc. were hugely popular in the 60s 70s and 80s, but those sounds have just gone. It's all vowels now.

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 19:42

I agree Cuthbert, Ethel and Marmaduke are probably gone.

Archibald will be back, shortened to Archie.

Some names definitely vary regionally/communally. I've seen Judith, Naomi and Deborah mentioned as fading away and they are super common in my community. I can think of multiple people in every age group!

Lucinda is one I haven't heard used in any age group. Also Herbert, Doreen, Maureen and Stanley in anyone under 70. But then again some of the names I thought went out with the dinosaurs are becoming popular again!

Dasher789 · 23/09/2021 19:43

Brenda and Maureen - agree! Cant see those on the comeback list Grin

Stasiland · 23/09/2021 19:45

I have some indian colleagues who have those names - very traditional and slightly old fashioned to our ears. Obviously a cultural kind of thing.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 23/09/2021 19:46

Also Herbert, Doreen, Maureen and Stanley in anyone under 70

I know several teen and preteen Stanleys.

And a 68 year old Maureen...

But yeah, I don't think Maureen, Doreen or Herbert will be making a comeback any time soon.

Bigboysmademedoit · 23/09/2021 19:47

Oral - yes I do know of someone with that name. Hope it doesn’t make a comeback!

Imissmoominmama · 23/09/2021 19:50

Kevin, Keith, Wayne

Sharon, Tracy, Christine

Imissmoominmama · 23/09/2021 19:50

I know 4 little Stanleys!

home2012 · 23/09/2021 19:51

@CallMeRisley

As a primary school teacher, that just out of the ones mentioned so far there are many Violets, a Kevin, a Mona and I know a toddler Vera. I have to say I don’t think there are any names that couldn’t potentially make a come back other than ones with very negative connotations such as Adolf (as mentioned by PP), Myra (Hindley).
I know a six year old Myra
CatTerrier · 23/09/2021 19:53

Fanny
Dick
Rodger

grlwhowrites · 23/09/2021 19:56

I love the name Mildred! I love quite a few old names (Audrey, Mabel, Vera, Margot, Betsy chef's kiss) and some will definitely come back but I think it's the likes of Ian, Gary, Craig, Trevor, Denise, Tracey, Carole and, of course, Karen, that won't make a comeback any time soon.

LST · 23/09/2021 19:59

Carl, Alan, Dave, Ian, Keith & Brian.

doctorsnoddy · 23/09/2021 19:59

Euphemia - I have an aunt with this name. She's in her nineties and the name was old fashioned when she was born!

bluestarthread · 23/09/2021 20:01

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

I have a Violet! She’s in Year 11 now and there are no others in her school but we do hear of others from time to time. Old lady names are cool!!
vinoandbrie · 23/09/2021 20:03

Roger.

NigellaSeed · 23/09/2021 20:04

Lindsay for a boy

Some of these mentioned I think are too nice and will always be around, like Jeremy.
