Names that are never coming back

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

@Clymene

They will come back. All the Victorian names the post war parents avoided are now back in fashion and I'm sure all those names like Gary, Barbara, Sandra etc will come back round again
David Mitchell and Victoria Coren-Mitchell have a daughter called Barbara.
AnotherFruitcake · 23/09/2021 18:48

And as some pps said, some of the names listed are definitely being used. There are lots of primary-school age Violets, and I know two hipster kids called Mona and Ursula, and a Cornelius (generally known as Con) who must be in his teens now.

Youcancallmeval · 23/09/2021 18:48

Many of the names mentioned are in evidence in settings at the moment. We have lots of Kevins around, it seems to be popular in our Eastern European families. I teach a toddler Edna. I did have a Barry a few years ago, made me smile everytime I said it.

I think Karen is unlikely to be used for a long time

4BlueTowers · 23/09/2021 18:50

@ILookAtTheFloor

Gillian Tracey Malcolm

I'd actually love to resurrect Malcolm. He'd be the only Malcolm in his class, nay, in the whole school Grin

Except for the teachers Grin

My younger Ds has a name that is really unpopular (named after his GD) and i always say he is the only one in the school, except for the teachers.

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet

I don’t think there’s been a single baby named Gary since 1992 or something. So it’s effectively been out of favour for 30 years. I think Barry will die a death too.
You say that but when I named my daughter in 1987 her name hadn’t been in the top 100 since 1905 and created very mixed reactions. It suddenly appeared in the top 50 in 1994 out of nowhere, and has stayed between 90 and 45 ever since.
MintyGreenDream · 23/09/2021 18:51

Keith.But having said that I know of an 11 year old with that name.

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:51

Definitely all those seventies names will be back.

I can't see Beryl or Gertrude making a comeback though. Although Beryl is a precious stone so you never know.

Gaylord, Randy, and Fanny Blush

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

My DD 8 has a class mate called Violet.
Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 23/09/2021 18:53

Lisa is my name and I can't see it making a comeback.

QuickieNCforthis · 23/09/2021 18:54

Based on another thread;

Myra
Adolf/Adolphe

and I agree, Karen sadly.

Then,

Gaye
Gaynor
Bertha
Dai
Les
Desmond
Willy
Dick
Bruce

I actually think it's some 60s, 70s and 80s names that are likely to not come back maybe ever.

Names like Tracey, Denise, Jacqui, Beverley, Tiffany, Courtney, Stephanie, Michelle, Brett, Wesley, Darrell etc

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2021 18:54

Randy is an American nickname for Richard, I don't think it was ever used in the UK. Fanny short for Frances.

Jason
Wayne

@CallMeRisley

As a primary school teacher, that just out of the ones mentioned so far there are many Violets, a Kevin, a Mona and I know a toddler Vera. I have to say I don’t think there are any names that couldn’t potentially make a come back other than ones with very negative connotations such as Adolf (as mentioned by PP), Myra (Hindley).
@CallMeRisley

I wouldn't bet on Myra, there was a thread fairly recently where someone was considering it & loads said 'NO', but many said by the time she's at secondary no one will make the connection.

I disagree!!

MrsJBaptiste · 23/09/2021 18:54

Of all those mentioned, Fanny and Gaylord are the two that will never come back! 😊

Rainbowheart1 · 23/09/2021 18:55

Gary, Barry and Derek

Karen I imagine because of the memes.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/09/2021 18:58

I don’t think you can possibly say. 20+ years ago I would have said Arthur.

Mariell · 23/09/2021 19:00

Nicola.
Joanne.
Sharon.
Mark.
Richard.
Jeremy.
Helen.

Those are some of my classmates names in the 70s that I don’t think I’ve seen being used in the last couple of decades.

AnotherElaine · 23/09/2021 19:00

Can’t see Elaine being popular… 😬

GameSetMatch · 23/09/2021 19:00

Well my niece is Mildred but we all call her Millie
My friend had a baby called Birdie recently and I never though that would come back.
My next door neighbour three year old is called Elver never thought that would make a come back either.

HorsesHoundsandHills · 23/09/2021 19:00

We have a Derek in the family, and I know of at least two others under the age of 12.

HairyToity · 23/09/2021 19:02

I know a gorgeous 8 year old Stephanie.

I also know a toddler Paul.

I agree certain names such as Adolf are never coming back. The rest never say never.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/09/2021 19:02

Cuthbert
Herbert
Cyril
Gertrude

But then I used to think the same about Mabel and Ada - names that conjured up someone in a pinny with rollers in her hair and a fag hanging off her lip, wielding a mangle.

Pixxie7 · 23/09/2021 19:03

Eileen

Bluesheep8 · 23/09/2021 19:07

Eileen

Come on...
