Names that are never coming back

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I teach two Stanleys! Also a Mabel and a Violet.
You think names won't come back, but they do.
I never thought I'd teach an Elsie or an Archie but they're popular names.
Never say never!

Mandy and Angela.

Yvonne and Barbara.

hiredandsqueak · 23/09/2021 20:06

Neil, Shane, Mark are names I've not heard in years. Rodney, Victor, Neville and Maurice.
Colette, Kerry, Janet, Carol, Terri, Paula all popular when I was at school but haven't met any young ones with the names.

I know a little Gwendolyn.

@ILookAtTheFloor I teach several Malcolms. It's never been out of favour in this region. Names like Henry are very uncommon though.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 23/09/2021 20:20

I know a baby Philip. Classic name!

WhistlersandJugglers · 23/09/2021 20:20

I think Malcolm is a great name. I know of a small Mark and teenagers called Kevin and Jeremy. I think a few names like Claire and Sandra will come back a bit in 10 or 15 years when my generation are grandmothers.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 23/09/2021 20:21

I also know an Angela, beautiful name.

Nigel...made infamous by a particular creep who can't say no to "RussiaToday" money, and who helped do our country down.

I think Karen is unlikely to make a resurgence any time soon!

Maireas · 23/09/2021 20:29

I teach a Sally and a Shona.
There seems to be a Thomas in nearly every class.

Twenty years ago we said certain names were never coming back but they are back in fashion. Never say never

chickenandchipsinabasket · 23/09/2021 20:39

@NigellaSeed

Lindsay for a boy

Some of these mentioned I think are too nice and will always be around, like Jeremy.

Don't see many boys named Jocelyn, Evelyn, Vivian or Hillary these days

Not many girls named Hillary come to think of it
