Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

Bertha?

My friend's son is Mortimer, or Morti for short. Cute name.
My friend 40's is called Mona, pronounced moaner, not what I would choose tbh.
I love the name Violet, I think girls names based on flowers and precious stones will never go out of fashion.

Gosh I know lots of little Kitty’s.

I love Mortimer / Morti! Very cool.

A friend called her baby IAN!

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 18:18

My son is nearly 19. We didn't know until he was born that he was a boy, and considered Frances and Georgina as names!

I also really like the name Christine, but DH didn't.

Some of the names people have mentioned will never die out as they are very Catholic names.

And I met an Adolf in Germany in 1992 and he was about 27 at the time!

Millie is short for Amanda and a friend of mine has a daughter of about 8 who is Amanda known as Millie.

I do think calling a child Gertrude or Ethel would be child abuse!

In my late 1970s primary school class we had Sarah, Linda, Tracey x 2, Karen x 2, Melanie, Mandy, Caroline, Helen, Hazel among others.

Myra, my ex boyfriends mother was called Myra. She said once ‘you never hear of anyone being called Myra now?’ Erm there’s a reason for that!

housemdwaswrong · 05/10/2021 18:34

I teach 4 Ivors atm. in year 7. Not a name I ever thought would revive!

Sweetpea84 · 05/10/2021 19:05

I look after a nursery child called Ian and there’s a Naomi in my sons class.

It's already coming back. The younger generations aren't associating it with Myra Hindley, they don't seem to have a clue about her.
DemBonesDemBones · 05/10/2021 20:48

Someone has probably already said it but Isis. A beautiful name but you couldn't use it now.

DemBonesDemBones · 05/10/2021 20:56

@LaBellina that's a beautiful name! My great Grandmother was called Robina. Which sounds pretty but is very close to Ribena Grin

@Handsnotwands

There’s a yr 2 Philip at my sons school. V v posh. Must be a family name
My partners (27) name is Philip, they're far from posh but it is a family name only stemming from his Grandad though.

I've demoted it to middle name should we have a boy, it's an awful name and I'm fine with breaking tradition.
Middle is a good compromise I think 😂
