Names that are never coming back

543 replies

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I just remembered my great grandmother’s name was Adelia. Very old fashioned name that you don’t hear anymore but I think it’s beautiful and I hope it will make a comeback.

Alcemeg · 26/09/2021 17:43

My great-aunt Vin was short for Lavinia. Very poor Brummie family with fanciful/escapist romantic/Italianate names. My gran's name was Selina.

Spindrifting · 26/09/2021 18:07

Yes, Mavis, Maud, Enid, Barbara, Betty etc are total hipster baby names.

namechangedisgrace · 26/09/2021 18:13

Well in the last 5 years I've taught: Alfred (Alfie), Edith, Cynthia, Penelope (nelly), Guy, Neil, Gareth, Felicity, Maude, Winifred (Winnie), Eduardo (teddy), Augustine....

namechangedisgrace · 26/09/2021 18:13

And a Malcolm!

Spindrifting · 26/09/2021 18:18

@namechangedisgrace

And a Malcolm!
It’s only from Mn that I realised that Malcolm is a perfectly standard/classic name in Scotland rather than the ‘Bernard-and-Malcolm the arfing, boozing, gammon-faced golfing stockbrokers’ type of name it’s always been for me.
midsomermurderess · 26/09/2021 18:28

Exactly, with Malcolm. And Ian and Kenneth aren't regarded as oddities in Scotland either. They might not be that common right now but they will come back.

Vin sounds better than Lav :-).

I quite like the name Malcolm.

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

I know loads of kids called Violet.
PeriChristmas · 26/09/2021 18:45

@HHSchultz

I doubt Kevin will come back but you never know.
DS has a kevin in his year4 class.
PeriChristmas · 26/09/2021 18:48

@Fateofthecookies

Archibald, fanny, Gertrude (don’t know why that last one reminds me of a pickle).
Because gherkins?!
midsomermurderess · 26/09/2021 18:58

Kevin had a very big moment in France for a while. For what it's worth. A few years ago no one would have entertained Arthur, Alfie, Archie et al. Nothing is out of bounds in the future

EishetChayil · 26/09/2021 19:00

I know a baby Zelda and a four-year-old one. Gorgeous name.

PighillJamie · 27/09/2021 14:49

There's a French film Le Prénom staring one of my wife's favourite singer/actors Patrick Bruel where he tells his group of friends at a dinner party of his intention to name his as yet unborn child Adolf.
Cue lots of shock and horror amongst the group but has he points out, no one has stopped naming children Catherine, nor Joseph despite Catherine the Great and Joseph Stalin.
I won't spoil the outcome for you.

Kitty

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/09/2021 12:35

My daughters called Kitty. There are 3 in her secondary school and about 5 in the infant and juniors.

Most of these names are showing on the Darker green website, that has stats up to 2019.

Very, very few exceptions for the names in this thread. Most, even Gertrude, Doris, Violet, have a few entries since 1996.

Obvious exception is Adolf, 0, and Fanny also has 0.

And people might be surprised that Myra is already coming back, 74 babies given the name in 2019, and similar in the last 4 or 5 years, with at least a hand in every year of the stats.

That's because a lot of the youngsters are not aware of, or interested in, the Moors murders. My son has heard about them but simply hasn't remembered the names of the perpetrators.

Adolf is in a different league, kids get taught about him in school.

Many of these names are already showing signs of revival, even Brian.
