Yes, I think there's a difference between great performances, and great vocalists.
Bob Dylan doesn't have a good singing voice, neither do many others. Grin

Vocalists that make you go "how did they do that?" for me tend to be women: Ann Wilson, Grace Slick (Woodstock rendition of White Rabbit frequently gets awarded best female vocal moment of all time) Whitney, Barbra Streisand etc.

Sometimes though, that perfect vocal makes the performance look a bit cold. In popular music. If you listen to most musical theatre singers- in any West End show, their singing is a billion times better than most big stars. Technically. Yet they'll never become stadium fillers or megastars like Chris Martin and his heartfelt but nasal whine. Grin

I forgot Ann of Heart.

Kelly Clarkson can certainly sing as can Kelly from Stereophonics.

George Michael - incredible voice!

And a surprising one, Tony Hadley. Saw him about 10 years ago. Deep, rich, strong voice that reminded me of Sinatra for some reason. Gorgeous to listen to live.

onemouseplace · 18/09/2021 17:53

Totally agree with George Michael - he was phenomenal vocally when I saw him live. I only went as a bit of a pop nostalgia sort of thing, but was utterly blown away.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2021 18:01

Here's the vocal coach and his comments on George Michael.

I saw Bowie in '72 when I was a child. Can't begin to describe how extraordinary he was, a gorgeous creature from another planet.

It's fascinating isn't it? I discovered Ken Tamplin last year during lockdown and ended up watching so many of his videos on YouTube I got a bit of a crush on him. Blush
