George Michael for me. During lockdown I found a vocal coach on YouTube who did reviews of live singers and even he said he’s never seen GM have an off day.

DeadButDelicious · 18/09/2021 06:29

Devin Townsend. His voice is incredible.

Eyesofdisarray · 18/09/2021 06:31

Freddie of course
And Mike Patton; 6 octave vocal range 😍

MaudebeGonne · 18/09/2021 06:35

Can't believe no one mentioned Prince! He was phenomenal live. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were also excellent. Nick Cave (with or without The Bad Seeds) always do a great gig.
My wild card are Iron & Wine. Saw them in Shepard's Bush a few years ago and they were phenomenal.

Most disappointing live performance - Bob Dylan. I love Bob Dylan, so was heartbroken.n

It’s subjective.

I’ve never seen Meatloaf, although I’d love to.
Dh had, several times.

JorisBonson · 18/09/2021 07:08

I saw Gnarls Barkley live a while back and Ceelo Green's voice almost made me fall over.

I've seen both Meatloaf and David Bowie live.
Meatloaf behaved like a petulant child, got stroppy about something after 3 songs, told everyone he was "through" and left.
I hadn't wanted to go to Bowie. It was 1990, I wasn't particularly a fan.
It was amazing- it was mainly him, on stage, alone, almost acapella. No fancy lights or staging. Just one man and a microphone. Which was the most incredible staging ever.

I imagine Freddy Mercury would have taken some beating though. And I'd love to see Liam snarling in his orange cagoule.

I think because of the vague pop ballad easy listening canon that GM belonged to, people didn't realise how good his actual voice was. Apparently one of the X factor judges, can't remember now if it's Nicole Scherzinger or one of the other ones is the same. But because it's pop and doesn't "test" the ear, nobody notices how amazing the actual voice is.

My absolute stars best live performers I’ve seen live would be -
Ella fitzgerald
Liza Minnelli - peerless when on form
Patti smith
Loudon wainwright
Kiri te Kanawa esp as the countess in M of Figaro
Leonard Cohen
Gill Scott-heron

For me, it's not about the absolute best summer but stage presence and interaction with the crowd. I haven't seen anyone live in so long so can't really comment on who was better at that. I've seen some good ones though.

EmeraldRaine · 18/09/2021 07:25

Are you having a laugh? Meat loaf is a terrible live singer. He might have been ok in the 80s but his voice went years ago. I saw him about 10 years ago and his backing singers did the whole show and he did a little bit of dodgy vocal over the top.

I can think of about 100 people off the top of my head who are better than meat loaf. Pink is the best live singer for me. She can sing live while doing all sorts of acrobatics and sounds awesome while she's doing it.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2021 07:25

That's very true @Geamhradh, easy to dismiss George Michael because of all the poppy Wham! stuff, not highbrow enough possibly.

Onlinedilema · 18/09/2021 07:26

I've seen lots of bands and singers live. Never seen Meatloaf though. I've heard mixed reviews about him.
Seen Pink twice and she certainly can sing.
Bowie was disappointing to me, an absolute legend but not a great vocalist.
I think Barbara Streisand for sheet vocal talent is hard to beat, her voice is beautiful and so in tune.
For me musical theatre performers are the absolute pinnacle of perfection. I have cried at many performances for their ability to reach deep within the song.
I also want to say how fabulous Axel Rose was, a bit of a diva, but what a voice.
Have to say S Club 7 were memorable only for their lack of vocal talent. Jo was the only one who could hold a tune.

HumbugWhale · 18/09/2021 07:26

Jarvis Cocker
Thom York
Lemmy

Also for putting on a great show Juatin Timberlake who I would never have thought to go and see but a friend had a spare ticket. It was his dancing that was amazing!

bigdecisionstomake · 18/09/2021 07:29

George Michael - beyond compare. So sad won't get to see him again.

The one I always wished I had a chance to see was Freddie Mercury - recordings of his live performances look awesome.

Onlinedilema · 18/09/2021 07:30

For 'entertainment' Freddy Mercury was unbeatable. He held the crowd in the palm of his hand, as did Bruce Springsteen I have to say. Made you feel like he was performing to you alone in your back garden when in actual fact it was more like 90,000 people.
