Honestly Ive just finished Time what an amazing piece of tv. I love him. My friend has put a downer on it saying he cant act and his accent is the same in everything. He can, cant he?

OP posts:

He was amazing in ‘Time’ but I guess he was just playing the part of ‘Sean Bean Goes To Jail And Doesn’t Like It’ as the accent was the same as usual (gruff Yorkshire) 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rosesareyellow · 18/06/2021 12:44

Sean Bean is Sean Bean. A bit like Clive Owen is always Clive Owen. And I’m my probably unpopular opinion Judy Dench is always Judi Dench. They learn their lines and are indeed good to watch. But they can’t ‘act’ for shit.

Oneearringlost · 18/06/2021 12:45

Jimmy McGovern, OMG. Watch "The Street". He has a huge and enduring loyalty to his actors too.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/06/2021 13:33

was absolutely gorgeous back in the day

I didn't know him at all from his younger days. First introduction really was the priest in Broken, and he was amazing. Then as Douglas Bennett in World on Fire, another wonderful role.

But I didn't think he was gorgeous at all! I just googled him as a younger actor & realise you're right.

But it was definitely his acting.

I hate that I know about his personal life now, God he's sounds awful.

Fyredraca · 18/06/2021 13:48

I've been in lust with him since Clarissa which I watched in my room with the sound on low so my mother wouldn't hear (it was too racy apparently).
Also he can do accents. He was incredible in "Legend" a few years back which was a US tv show that was a casualty of the writers strike.
World on Fire was a recent highlight.

Bibidy · 18/06/2021 13:50

Acting isn't all about doing different accents!! That's such a poor measure of a good actor. Colin Firth rarely uses a different voice than his own and he's still a wonderful actor.

I think Sean Bean is a great, particularly his performance in Time.

MarshaBradyo · 18/06/2021 13:52

I hadn’t considered accents as that important either

Wanting to watch them is a good sign. I could watch Stephen Graham in more stuff, feels compelling

Bibidy · 18/06/2021 13:52

@Ozanj

If Sean Bean had graduated from Eton / Oxbridge and spoke in a cut glass English accent he would probably get the recognition he deserves. He is a fantastic actor. The emotions he portrays, the realism, the complexity is far beyond many, many other actors.
Yes I agree. Just because he has a distinctive regional accent he is being called a bad actor, even though loads of prominent southern actors never change theirs!
DumpyDonkey · 18/06/2021 13:55

He can't act and he is also an arse. He used to frequent the bars in the area. He was a jumped up moron.

pigglepot · 18/06/2021 13:58

I think he's an amazing actor and I thought Time was absolutely brilliant

Gothichouse40 · 18/06/2021 13:59

If I remember correctly, Im sure he said he wouldn't change his accent. I think he's a wonderful actor and have followed him since Sharpe, which was an excellent series. I think he should have got some kind of award for Broken. Time was excellent. I also watch anything with Stephen Graham (prison officer in Time) too, he's another really good actor.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 18/06/2021 14:02

@DENNYCRANE

Lol, bless you, no.

He can do 'Sean Bean'. That's about it.

Oh dear. Patronising AND wrong.

He’s a very good actor with an amazing range. Unfortunately a lot of people really struggle to get past the Yorkshire accent - interesting, especially when there’s no real need for him to use a different accent in a role. Would everyone have a similar problem with an actor who always spoke in RP?

@fyredraca Legends was brilliant. In fact I may watch it again.

CatherineMorland · 18/06/2021 14:43

I saw him as Macbeth with Samantha Bond years ago. He was amazing.

Peach01 · 18/06/2021 14:47

I tend do avoid things he's in, I don't like him and it's completely unjustified 😂 he was on something years ago that my parents watched and I hated it. That's probably why.
Sorry I've no idea what his acting skills are like. He could be outstanding and I've been missing out.

GloriousMystery · 18/06/2021 14:49

That was excellent -- in fact I kept thinking of it during Christopher Eccelston's recent RSC Macbeth, which didn't convince me, because he didn't seem to get on with the pentameter. Like another poster, I also saw him as Romeo at the RSC aeons ago, and he had whatever that is about certain actors, that means you're aware of them even when all they're doing is standing still and listening to someone else talking.

I like SB as an actor (though his NI accent on Patriot Games only ranks as 'Not as awful as Brad Pitt's for me). He chooses really interesting material, too.

I vaguely remember him in some pub in Belsize Park wearing nasty white sports socks and half-cut, once, back at some point in the 90s...

fussychica · 18/06/2021 14:54

What Ozanj said.
Loved him in Accused - amazing performance. Similarly Broken. Also good in The Medicis.
I actually think it's Stephen Graham who is the same in everything he's in, not a popular view I know.

My initial thought hmm not keen on him and I don’t know why. But Time is incredible so I’d say give it a go, he’s very good in it

......
He did go to RADA.

There are loads of actors with cut glass accents who regularly pop up on TV as barristers, army officers and the like. Sean Bean is well spoken, he has a regional accent; we've seen him as an officer, he could just as easily be a barrister or a doctor. I remember him as Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I certainly agree with your last sentence.

DinosaurDiana · 18/06/2021 15:01

He’s fantastic just as he is 😉

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/06/2021 15:38

You have to love Stephen Graham.

He's from Kirby

His wife, Hannah Walters, is quite a bit taller than him and still wears high heels and stack wedges. And he always looks delighted.

He's a fucking good actor.

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 18/06/2021 16:42

My BIL has worked with him a lot. The first time was a film called When Saturday Comes in the 90s. He said he is very friendly and down to earth but drinks a lot. Apparently he was called Shaun Bean at birth but goes by Sean Bean as it is more memorable.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 18/06/2021 16:45

Can I just shout out the amazing episode of The Accused Stephen Graham and Sean Bean did together? The Lady Of Shallot

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 18/06/2021 16:46

I remember Stephen.Graham and his wife taking part in a Stand Up To Cancer event on Channel 4. At the end all the participants were stood together on stage. As the credits were rolling someone's mic picked up a male voice slagging off Hannah and saying how fat she was. I thought it would've been all over SM but it must've only been our household to hear it.
