Actors who play the same role in various programs

I wonder if they get bored playing the same character over and over again.

I mean two I can think of straight off my head is Melissa McCartney and Rebel Wilson

They always seem to play the fat, happy go lucky, funny girl.

If I was an actor I would love to play a mixture of characters. Personally I’d love to play a villain just so I could experience it Grin

Samuel L Jackson,he just plays a wisecracking character in every film.

And I agree about Adam Sandler,he just plays the father rather than the son in films.

topcat2014 · 22/05/2021 17:45

Martin Freeman is about to be in a police drama (as the police officer), which could be good - has he done police before?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/05/2021 17:49

Michael Fenton Stevens, even he says himself that if you want a slightly posh, slightly baffled, comedy character for a minor role then he's the go to.

Danny Dyer. Professional cockney

@NamechangeApril21

Adam Sandler
The thing I don't get about him is that he gets leading man roles.
HappyWipings · 22/05/2021 18:03

@cortex10 but OC's characters in Greenwing , Peep show and that Mitchell and Webb look are completely different. She's very versatile actually.

SpacePug · 22/05/2021 18:05

Liam Neeson is a bit like this. I disagree about Sean Bean though, have you seen Snowpiercer? He's great in that

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/05/2021 18:08

Will Smith is himself in everything.

purrswhileheeats · 22/05/2021 18:11

@iklboo

Colin Farrell - also only has four expressions - baffled, happy baffled, sad baffled, angry baffled.
I think it's Colin's eyebrows that help him with the bafflement Grin He also did angsty baffled in 'In Bruges' Hmm
Mydogisagentleman · 22/05/2021 18:32

Michael Caine

CatServant2020 · 22/05/2021 18:38

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Sean Connery, not only did he play the same character in every role but just played himself in every role 😀

Yes he played Steve Fulcher the detective that circumvented PACE laws to get Christopher Halliwell in ‘A Confession’ He Was good in it
Councilworker · 22/05/2021 19:01

Tony Pitts. I never saw him in Emmerdale as Archie but since then he seems to have only ever played Coppers. It's almost as if it's a casting in-joke now. Need a gruff Northern copper, get Tony Pitts

woodhill · 22/05/2021 19:08

@RedRec

Jim Carrey has always played the bendy faced loon.
Absolutely with huge gnashers
woodhill · 22/05/2021 19:10

MC was quite good in Sleuth though imo

newnortherner111 · 22/05/2021 19:37

Bill Nighy plays the same character, even though with different names. Or as I have previously put it, Bill Nighy plays Bill Nighy.

iklboo · 22/05/2021 19:42

Samuel L Jackson,he just plays a wisecracking character in every film.

Definitely not in Jungle Fever.

woodhill · 22/05/2021 19:52

John Le Measurier but still great somehow - perhaps Hugh Grants role model

Sue Pollard

woodhill · 22/05/2021 19:52

@HuntingoftheSnark

The first time I saw Sean Bean was in Stratford with the RSC - he was Romeo and had a whole year of 15 year olds from my school waiting at the stage door afterwards. He was brilliant and nothing like the armour hard man roles. I'm now 51 so it was a few years ago.
I saw him in this too! He was so good.
howsoonisnow85 · 22/05/2021 20:02

Cant believe no one has said Johnny Depp! Worst 'actor' ever- just does the same thing in every film!

Soubriquet · 22/05/2021 20:04

Actually I think Johnny Depo is pretty good at adapting

He does funny and crazy in things like Alice in Wonderland or Pirates of the Carribean, but then he also does serious in this like Sweeny Todd

Kiether Sutherland - drippy martyr in everything!

EvilOnion · 22/05/2021 20:13

Richard Ayoade. It doesn't matter what he's in/presenting/advertising - it's always in the style of Moss!

Same with Simon Bird playing a variation of Will in everything - I'm still convinced that Pus face is just a grown up Briefcase 🤣

I'm not sure if it's an assumed comedic personality or something?!

EvilOnion · 22/05/2021 20:23

@howsoonisnow85, I actually think Johnny Depp is pretty adaptable.

He manages to pull off being a drugs lord, a weird recluse with scissors for hands, a murderous singing barber, a pirate, a an eccentric chocolate factory owner and a mad hatter. If that's not eclectic I don't know what is.

I don't get the attraction to the bloke though!
