Actors who play the same role in various programs

I wonder if they get bored playing the same character over and over again.

I mean two I can think of straight off my head is Melissa McCartney and Rebel Wilson

They always seem to play the fat, happy go lucky, funny girl.

If I was an actor I would love to play a mixture of characters. Personally I’d love to play a villain just so I could experience it Grin

Martin Freeman is the same whether he’s Tim in the Office or Bilbo bloody Baggins.
I thought he was good in Fargo though I get what you mean
Phyllis321 · 22/05/2021 14:01

Martin Freeman did a remake of one of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads monologues and was very good in it, nothing like his normal persona. It's on YouTube.

There is an American actor that plays a doctor in so many things I wouldn’t blame him for thinking he is an actually doctor now.
He played EXACTLY the same parts in both Virgin River and Hart of Dixie. Small town grumpy doctor close to retiring feels threatened by the new female doctor from The Big Smoke but gradually comes to love her like his own daughter.

Yes his talking heads was good, I watched them on iPlayer.

The first time I saw Sean Bean was in Stratford with the RSC - he was Romeo and had a whole year of 15 year olds from my school waiting at the stage door afterwards. He was brilliant and nothing like the armour hard man roles. I'm now 51 so it was a few years ago.

JaneJeffer · 22/05/2021 14:05

Will Mellor is the same in everything.

iklboo · 22/05/2021 14:09

Colin Farrell - also only has four expressions - baffled, happy baffled, sad baffled, angry baffled.

YellowScallion · 22/05/2021 14:11

I'm sure he's played lots of other roles but David Harewood always seems to be a CIA/Military officer or similar in everything I've seen him in

HarrietHairbrush · 22/05/2021 14:11

Bradley Whitford (Josh in the west wing)
Basically plays harassed white middle
Manager no matter what he is

MamaRaisingBoys · 22/05/2021 14:13

Jennifer Aniston
Shane Richie

SocialAffairsAndWoodlandFolk · 22/05/2021 14:15

I really like Martin Freeman but, whenever I see him on screen, I can never see the character he's supposed to be playing- though he plays them well- I just see Martin Freeman.
Really, so far as I'm concerned, Martin Freeman is an ex paper salesman who settled into being an assistant to a consulting detective after spending a few years as a hobbit.

HappyWipings · 22/05/2021 14:16

Matt leblanc is another one. Hes always a Joey type. Even in episodes where he played himself.

I'm sure hes okay with it though as it's made him a very rich man , and hes very watchable.

Spidey66 · 22/05/2021 14:23

Ray Winstone always seems to play the hard man. Does it well, admittedly, and I do like him.

Cocolapew · 22/05/2021 14:28

I can only see Tom Hanks no matter what character he's playing.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 22/05/2021 14:38

Nicola Walker always plays slightly grumpy ‘feisty’ woman. High flying London divorce lawyer or hard up Yorkshire farmer, all the same.
It does make a difference if you like the actor or not obviously because I’d have to agree with both Stephen Graham and Keeley Hawes, but I love them both, so I’ll forgive them Grin

Floralprints · 22/05/2021 14:38

Tom Hardy has played the unhinged, violent criminal a few too many times now.

PollyPepper · 22/05/2021 14:40

This is going to be controversial but.....Michael Caine.
Terrible, one note actor.

singsingbluesilver · 22/05/2021 14:47

Tom Hanks - if you think he is a one trick pony you can't have seen Philadelphia.

singsingbluesilver · 22/05/2021 14:48

Hugh Grant also really surprised me as Jeremy Thorpe too.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 22/05/2021 14:49

Richard Curtis makes Hugh Grant appear as though he is really only one character. I think he’s very underrated actually. He’s very funny naturally too.

So agree! Tom hanks isn't on this list. Forest gump, Philadelphia, green mile, the captain in the highjacked boat thing. All so different role wise. He does look the same of course, because that's what having a face does for you 🤣

Completely agree, he was amazing as Jeremy Thorpe and also in Paddington 2 (the best film ever madeWink Grin)
Footloosefancyfree · 22/05/2021 15:45

Tom cruise action hero
I think Emma Watson and Emma Roberts are themselves, zero acting range.

cortex10 · 22/05/2021 15:49

I'm afraid it's Olivia Coleman for me - even as HM Queen Elizabeth in the Crown I just kept seeing the detective from Broadchurch in a nice frock.

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2021 15:49

Tom Cruise is more or less the same character in everything apart from Rainman and the one where he's the injured Vietnam War soldier with straggly long hair.

Sid James. Same character in every Carry On film. Ditto Babs and Kenneth Williams. Grin Wink
