Actors who play the same role in various programs

I wonder if they get bored playing the same character over and over again.

I mean two I can think of straight off my head is Melissa McCartney and Rebel Wilson

They always seem to play the fat, happy go lucky, funny girl.

If I was an actor I would love to play a mixture of characters. Personally I’d love to play a villain just so I could experience it Grin

I agree with most of these but Sean Bean was terrific as a priest in Broken and Bradford Whitford was quite chilling in The Handmaid's Tale. Hugh Grant seems to have finally escaped his stuttery posh twit role, i hope he doesn't get sucked back in. I think Ben Whishaw is a great actor, but he is definitely typecast imo.

Damnloginpopup · 22/05/2021 15:56

Bill Nighy doesn't even act. He is just bill Nighy.

UselessTrees · 22/05/2021 15:57

Joey Lawrence. Not only always the same character, but also always called Joe(y). Nice work if you can get it, I suppose.

Quite a few whose names escape me are always, always CIA and appear in any film or TV series that has anything to do with the CIA occasionally they get to expand their range by being the baddy/mole within the CIA but they are always CIA never anything else! I reckon their on a list entitled 'Use these actors for CIA roles only'Grin

BlueLobelia · 22/05/2021 16:04

@PollyPepper

This is going to be controversial but.....Michael Caine. Terrible, one note actor.
Oh no, not in The Quiet American.

He was brilliant in that. And desperately fanciable. Blush

Gilead · 22/05/2021 16:06

Colin Firth. Sorry.

MrsTophamHat · 22/05/2021 16:13

Martin Freeman. Always.

CrazyCatsAndKittens · 22/05/2021 16:13

Tom Cruise is more or less the same character in everything apart from Rainman and the one where he's the injured Vietnam War soldier with straggly long hair.

Really!?

iklboo · 22/05/2021 16:21

He's very good - and barely recognisable - in the new series of Fargo.

KittyKatChonky · 22/05/2021 16:24

I watched the terrible “The Girl in the Spiders Web” and Stephen Merchant was in it with his ooooh arrrrh accent (Bristolian?) He was supposed to be Swedish 😂

Adam Sandler

Soubriquet · 22/05/2021 16:29

Adam Sandler yes!

You never see him doing a serious role

Have you seen Uncut Gems?! Definitely not comedic and he's the lead.

Soubriquet · 22/05/2021 16:36

No I haven’t. He’s not a favourite actor of mine so I don’t go out of my way to find films with him in it

@singsingbluesilver

Hugh Grant also really surprised me as Jeremy Thorpe too.
Have you seen The Gentlemen? Hugh Grant is fantastic and not "Hugh Grant" at all.

YES!

He drives me up the wall to be honest. He' been dining out on the same ''blow the bloody doors off' act for years.

tobee · 22/05/2021 16:41

Hugh Grant great as Jeremy Thorpe
Melissa McCarthy great and definitely not happy go lucky in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
James Nesbitt great in Bloody Sunday.

Lots of directors/casting directors seem unimaginative but mass audiences seem to like seeing stuff on repeat.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/05/2021 16:43

William Roache always seems to play a northern character,
I reckon he's probably stuck with that sort of role now. Hmm

RosaBudDrood · 22/05/2021 16:43

Cameron Diaz always seems to be the ditzy, flirty blonde.

Laiste · 22/05/2021 16:58

Laurence Fishburne. I enjoy him in films, but you always know what you're going to get. Brooding, grumpy reluctant hero. Wise, and wounded by the world, pulls out the stops at the end Grin

RedRec · 22/05/2021 17:07

Jim Carrey has always played the bendy faced loon.

Pinkblueberry · 22/05/2021 17:10

Clive Owen. He is literally just Clive Owen I’m every film - I think I did see a film not too long ago where he puts on a really terrible American accent so I guess there’s a reason why no one tries to make him do anything different.

Crankley · 22/05/2021 17:11

No matter what part, Emma Thompson always plays herself from what I've seen.

elp30 · 22/05/2021 17:23

Pip Torrens

If the role necessitates a posh, authoritarian, snobby/ stuffy person, Pip is your man!

rookiemere · 22/05/2021 17:29

Lily James - gawd knows why they cast her in things, always the flighty young lady.
