Actors who play the same role in various programs

I wonder if they get bored playing the same character over and over again.

I mean two I can think of straight off my head is Melissa McCartney and Rebel Wilson

They always seem to play the fat, happy go lucky, funny girl.

If I was an actor I would love to play a mixture of characters. Personally I’d love to play a villain just so I could experience it Grin

Lily James, I’m sure she just plays herself. I find Reece Witherspoon a bit similar, but maybe not quite so bad.

I don't think Colin Farrell was baffled in Intermission or Tigerland. He was in Phone Booth but he was meant to be and it was a good performance. I think he's a decent actor.

Johnny Depp was very good in The Libertine

Keanu Reeves.

Judi Dench.

Pissed off with a posh accent and a steely glare.

Boring!

Can I throw in a radio one? Geoffrey Whitehead as a grumpy old man.

16purplecolour16 · 22/05/2021 21:05

Why is Lily James cast in everything? Baffled.

Eyesofdisarray · 22/05/2021 21:11

James Nesbit- I can't watch him at all
Keira Pouting Knightley
Emma Watson.... just Hermione
Was tempted to say Sean Bean: though he was really good in Jimmy McGovern's Accused series- 'Tracie's story' and in 'Broken' loved that

Gordon Jackson. Great actor but Hudson and Cowley were barely any different. He played a slightly more ruthless version of Cowley in The Whistle Blower.

Martin Shaw, to his credit, largely left his Doyle persona behind but became a luvvie at the same time. Chief Constable Alan Cade and Judge John Deed were much the same. Likewise, John Thaw only had to broaden his Mancunian accent a little to go from Inspector Morse to Kavanagh, QC.

I once saw a film starring Peter Falk, among other luminaries. I forget the name of the film (he sang Deep Purple) but his character was essentially Columbo for the big screen.

Giggorata · 22/05/2021 21:16

I was going to say Bill Nighy, too. I generally enjoy watching it, though.

Rubyrecka · 22/05/2021 21:37

@murbblurb

James Nesbitt. One trick pony.
This! He’s such a bore to watch!
JadedStrumpet · 22/05/2021 21:47

@elp30 Pip does it sooooo well though!

IslaMann · 22/05/2021 21:56

@HuntingoftheSnark

The first time I saw Sean Bean was in Stratford with the RSC - he was Romeo and had a whole year of 15 year olds from my school waiting at the stage door afterwards. He was brilliant and nothing like the armour hard man roles. I'm now 51 so it was a few years ago.
I saw this production too, except at the Barbican in London. He was amazing. Nothing I've seen him in since matches it.
jincanpoops · 22/05/2021 22:02

@RedRec

Jim Carrey has always played the bendy faced loon.
Not in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
purpledagger · 22/05/2021 22:04

Jennifer Aniston - always playing Rachel in Friends.

Bill Nighy - posh and vague

Gordon Jackson was very different as Mr Lowther in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
WildRosie · 22/05/2021 22:23

I'll take your word for it, as I've never seen that film. Perhaps the authoritarian Gordon Jackson was a later persona.

Germolenequeen · 22/05/2021 22:27

There is an American actor that plays a doctor in so many things I wouldn’t blame him for thinking he is an actually doctor now.
He played EXACTLY the same parts in both Virgin River and Hart of Dixie. Small town grumpy doctor close to retiring feels threatened by the new female doctor from The Big Smoke but gradually comes to love her like his own daughter.

Tim Matheson - do a Google search - had a varied career spanning 50 odd years & oh so handsome - really can't blame him for easing up in his old age 😅

GiantKitten · 22/05/2021 22:29

@singsingbluesilver

Hugh Grant also really surprised me as Jeremy Thorpe too.
Agree about Jeremy Thorpe! He is loving not playing floppy-haired fop any more. He’s hilarious in The Gentlemen (even if there is an element of “my name is Michael Caine” in his delivery Grin)
WingingItSince1973 · 22/05/2021 22:30

Anna Friel. Tortured soul in most programmes. Do like her though.

Needhelp101 · 22/05/2021 22:31

Danny Dyer is always Danny Dyer. He is nonetheless great in Human Traffic and Severance.

Dwayne Johnson has some comedy chops. Great comic timing. He's excellent in Jumanji, Central Intelligence and Pain and Gain.

Agree on Bill Nighy and Clive Owen!

Needhelp101 · 22/05/2021 22:33

Oh and second Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me. Very nuanced and subtle performance (wasn't she Oscar nominated for it?)

Hugh Grant has grown into his career. He's fantastic in Paddington 2.

GiantKitten · 22/05/2021 22:34

@elp30

Pip Torrens

If the role necessitates a posh, authoritarian, snobby/ stuffy person, Pip is your man!

Except Cary Warleggan in Poldark! That was the first time I saw him (I don’t watch much TV or films) and I was stunned when I realised that Tommy Lascelles in the Crown was the same bloke Grin
