Food you love but can't get any more

Let me lead with the Waitrose pecorino and back dip. They've discontinued it and I have no idea why. I have been whingeing about it for two years now why would you discontinue such a popular product ?

I am just hoping the pork and iberico chorizo sausage rolls, also from waitrose, don't go the same way. It's been ages since I've seen them on the shelves.

Not only is it lockdown with nowt eke to think about but for, but I'm on a calorie controlled diet atm trying to get back in my dinner clothes before the weather warns up! All I can think about is eating.

What foods do you miss? Have they been discontinued? Can you only get them in a location you can't access? Are you trying to lose the lockdown lbs? Please make me feel better about being an obsessive foodie by joining me!

Marks and Spencer's used to do these aubergine dim sum things with a really spicy dip. They were lush.

Crunchymum · 28/03/2021 12:54

I cannot believe they've discontinued that dip?

I'm watching what I eat so haven't been down that aisle recently (mainly as I cannot resist buying and then eating it!!)

M&S seem to be the worst offenders? Years ago they used to do amazing chicken escalopes. Haven't been able to recreate them or find anything else that comes close. It still makes me sad.

Not a food item but Vaseline used to do deodorant when I was younger (cotton something or other? I can't quite remember) but it was the nicest smelling deodorant ever and I'd have have stockpiled it had I known.

sueelleker · 28/03/2021 12:58

@Buggerthebotox

Oh god yes, that Tesco mushroom paté. Loved that.

Liberté yoghurt. Suddenly disappeared off the shelves last year never to be seen again. It was my "go-to" dessert.

Vesta Paella in a box. I know you can get it still if you're really persistent but I haven't been able to get it in a shop for years.

Uncle Ted's Chicken and Mushroom Risotto (one of the rice pouches). Gone. Haven't seen it for yonks.

A crispbread called Vita Wheat. My mother was obsessed with them and I liked them too but I've never been able to find anything similar on the shelves.

I don't know what they've done to the Vesta Paella, but it hardly tastes of anything these days.
VouisLuitton · 28/03/2021 12:59

Do walkers sensations still do the minted lamb flavour? I used to love them but not seen them for years!!

sueelleker · 28/03/2021 13:06

@vampirethriller

Worcester sauce twiglets and lychee Rubicon ice lollies.
I think Rubicon still do the lychee juice drink; you could make your own lollies.
Whatwouldscullydo · 28/03/2021 13:07

Can you still get doritos with a hint of lime?

Last couple of times I've been into m&s I was unable to find their tray of dips. It contained 3. One.pea and Mint ( I think) it was green anyway, one carrot Nd cumin and one beetroot and mint. They were all delicious. I saw the beetroot one separately but not all three together in the tray.

Pink grapefruit calipos

Drinks without sweetener

mrstea301 · 28/03/2021 13:08

@greyspottedgoose

Sainsburys used to do a pea and mint fresh pasta that was amazing, never seen anything similar in any other supermarket
I know it's not the same when making it yourself, but there's a lovely Jamie Oliver recipe that sounds similar to this - it's in his Ministry of Food cookbook!! Can dig it out if you want!
veeeeh · 28/03/2021 13:10

I wonder how many of the products mentioned were imported from EU, and how many other things are difficult to get now because of the B word.

Just wondered, and I could be completely wrong in my thinking of course.

Flamingosarentreal · 28/03/2021 13:12

Sweetened Shredded coconut- used to buy it in the waitrose baking section as a snack
Options Mocha hot chocolate

lockdownfeelings · 28/03/2021 13:20

3 years ago, on summer, M&S had an absolutely delicious rosemary fresh baked bread. Just to take it away and never make it available ever again Sad

ChrissyPlummer · 28/03/2021 13:23

Waitrose used to do pork loins stuffed with apple & apricot and wrapped in bacon. The only pork product I would eat....and so, of course they’re discontinued.

Strawberry Sunny Delight.

Proper Cherry 7Up, I’ve had it from a few of those American shops but it’s not the same.

Smoked turkey - used to get it at a local butcher, they stopped doing it, Sainsbury’s used to do it but don’t anymore.

M&S Deltas/own brand potato triangles; crap now as they have reduced the salt so much.

Wizard mousse.

Turkey drummers - apparently still available but all the supermarkets near me have turkey dinosaurs which aren’t the same.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/03/2021 13:23

Going back many decades to student days, an occasional treat for myself when marginally less skint than usual, was a Vesta Paella.
I swear I’d still enjoy it now.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/03/2021 13:26

Wagamama Coconut, Ginger & Lemongrass stir fry sauce.

I bought Haagen Daz Peanut Butter Crunch earlier which is very similar to the vanilla and peanut one.

AlPacino · 28/03/2021 13:27

Marks used to have a salmon ‘plait’ that was salmon and broccoli in a cheese sauce in pastry. Was lovely and we bought it all the time.

Their lovely salmon en croute has also gone and been replaced by a bastardised Gastopub version.

I miss Spira bars too.

I doubt anyone else will remember this, but in the 80s/90s Sainsbury’s sold these individually wrapped cakes in silver wrappers, and I used to have one in my lunch box every day. They were bloody lush.

ignatiusjreilly · 28/03/2021 13:27

M&S Pain aux Chocolat Bread and Butter Pudding. Jonathan Ross talked about how high in calories it was on his TV show so they discontinued it. Don't eat it then, Jonathan, but don't ruin it for the rest of us!

Sainsbury's used to do an amazing cranberry muesli which had little white yoghurt drops in it, like white choc chips but sharp-tasting and delicious. Lots of nuts too. I was so disappointed when that went.

McDonald's hot fudge sundaes. Still available abroad but not here, for some reason. So much nicer than a McFlurry.

DianaT1969 · 28/03/2021 13:30

M&S had a beetroot dip that I haven't seen for a couple of years.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 28/03/2021 13:31

About 25 years ago Sara Lee did a chocolate meringue pie.

I'd love it to come back so much.

bumblenbean · 28/03/2021 13:32

Porkinsons sausages. So good. Also Cadbury’s Nuts About Caramel ... why oh why did they discontinue them?!

PissTestRightNowDaniella · 28/03/2021 13:43

Coffee flavour angel delight ( I am literally the only person who remembers it)

Cool minty eggs - like creme eggs but mint fondant.

Linda Mac did some southern fried fillets in the 90s. My Friday night treat with chips and salad as a student.

Jaspers biscuits

tuliprosedaffodil · 28/03/2021 13:43

Those of you missing the 90s childhood dessert of dreams, the mighty Sara Lee double chocolate gateau I had a Morrison's own frozen double chocolate gateau the other day and whilst it wasn't identical to the original, it was pretty close!

Tartyflette · 28/03/2021 13:46

Cadbury's chocolate covered whole nuts, in a tin, that used to appear around Christmastime.
It was a nice tin of whole brazil, almond and hazel nuts in a really thick glossy milk chocolate coating.
Probably would not be the same at all since they have traduced their dairy milk chocolate and would probably also be insanely expensive (not that it was ever cheap) b ut it was a lovely Christmas treat.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/03/2021 13:50

Nutty and Texan bars
M&s walnut cake
m&s potato bread with rosemary

Medusa1 · 28/03/2021 14:03

Bisto roast potatoes &
Gino Ginelli ice cream

MapGirlExtraordinaire · 28/03/2021 14:06

Cherry Garcia people, three comments:

  • It is definitely the best ice cream flavour, you all have excellent taste
  • I haven't seen it in shops for years but did relatively recently have some in a cinema which had a B&J stand
- I've got the B&J recipe book, I regularly make cherry garcia from there. I wouldn't want to be challenged to a blind taste test, but I think it's a pretty good approximation of how I remember the real thing? Happy to send recipe, pm me
thenightsky · 28/03/2021 14:07

Morrisons used to do an amazing chocolate cheesecake on the deli counter, alongside the cheese. Me and DH used to treat ourselves to a slice each every Saturday.
