Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

 1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

 2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

I have discovered some quite nice merlot, name something like chevalier ? (Bottle is in the recycling and too cold to go outside to look). It’s french. But, yes, the wine generally is not that good.

Rosehip10 · 06/03/2021 20:46

The fresh blueberries are always over ripe and vile

SarahAndQuack · 06/03/2021 20:49

Aldi fruit and veg here is always much better than Sainsbury's, except the potatoes and leeks. For some reason I don't understand, they cut the root off the leeks so they go dry, and the potatoes go off far too fast. But everything else is much nicer than other supermarkets and in better condition. It must be individual suppliers. Sorry, digression because we're talking about Lidl.

I can't stand Lidl chocolate. My mum raves about it and my German SIL goes on about how authentically Germanic it is, but I have an unsophisticated palate and to me it all just tastes bitter as fuck, or bland.

Elouera · 06/03/2021 20:52

The central aisle of mystery had a mini-chopper/food processor thing once. It worked fine for a month, but soon started jamming and is now blunt from only occassional use.

Fruit and veg doesnt last long

I loathe Lidl. It's the only decent sized supermarket within 10 miles of us and I would rather not have to shop there. Agree with so much of what has been said. DH likes it because he hates food shopping and likes to look at screwdrivers instead, so it's ideal for him.

Fruit and veg is awful and rots so quickly
Bags of salad - wet and smelly within a day
Awful shampoo/toiletries
Awful toilet roll
No decent butter
Rosemary crackers are nice - but almost every packet you buy they are shattered into pieces. No point buying crackers for cheese if they end up so tiny you can't actually eat them. I don't want a packet of crumbs
Crisps are tasteless
Dishwasher tablets/washing up liquid is hopeless
Even the dog won''t eat their dog food...

They are basically ok for anything you don't particularly notice the taste or quality of - cooking oil. Salt.

And there is only ever one till open and the service is shit. It pisses me off that I cannot buy branded stuff and have to go elsewhere. I DO actually want Lurpak - not "Danpak" - and I DO want Heinz Ketchup and Hellmans Mayonaise, not some fake version.

I don't want a wetsuit, thanks. Or a blowtorch. I'd rather have decent quality food.

Thanks jericho

XingMing · 06/03/2021 20:54

Strangely, @megletsecond, it's the only Weetabix alternative that that DH likes.

AnnaSW1 · 06/03/2021 20:57

Any fruit and veg. Tbh it put me off buying anything there.

FrenchyQ · 06/03/2021 20:58

Have to agree about the tortilla wraps, gave up on them after a couple of packs.
Never had a problem with their fruit and veg or meat.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 06/03/2021 20:59

The laundry detergent scent is so overpowering. It asked me feel ill when a load is drying.

Also the scented toilet paper. (It doesn’t say it is scented, it just is. Horrible scent)

Tinned chick peas: utterly tasteless and watery.

PrtScn · 06/03/2021 21:04

@Kotatsu

post kids my period seems to be so heavy that one day I bought the incontinence pads instead, and haven't looked back since - no stupid wings which stick to me, absorbant without being plasticy, and unscented, yet absorb any smell very well. They are quite fat, but then I need the absorbancy so I don't mind that.

Aldi steak is better that Lidl (the kids agree - Lidl is too gristly). Fruit is extremely variable, but the veg is fine, I buy the luxury toilet rolls, otherwise the roll itself is slightly too short to fit properly on my toilet roll holder and keeps falling out.

You know what, my mum gave me some incontinence pants when I’d just had a baby, and OH accidentally bought me some instead of night towels, and I agree. They are really good, and I have menorrhagia. I don’t get on with Always, they irritate down below, I think because they are scented and the material they are made of is not nice.
Sidewalksue · 06/03/2021 21:07

Tomato purée. Rank, ruined a meal with it.

PaperMonster · 06/03/2021 21:09

Never had a problem with their meat. I have set items I buy and that’s it.

I will never ever buy an electrical item from there. The level of customer service on their faulty electrical things is appalling.

GreenSlide · 06/03/2021 21:11
@GreenSlide, where can you find Always Infinity now??!?!?! They have disappeared from my local shops and I miss them.
I'm not sure sorry! I'm pregnant at the minute. I always got mine in Tesco before.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 06/03/2021 21:11

@ClangingChimesofDoom

Meat, always goes off the day you bring it home regardless of the use by date!
What temperature is your fridge running at? You really need a fridge thermometer - digital ideally - and your fridge should be running at 0-5C
StellaOlivetti · 06/03/2021 21:12

Their toothpaste(dentelux?) stripped the top layer of skin from the inside of my mouth!

mummywantstobeslim · 06/03/2021 21:13

Nothing. They have too many E. coli/ salmonella and plastic in food scares.

ConeHat · 06/03/2021 21:16

The front, veg, meat and sandwich meat go off really fast. You can freeze and defrost on the day for fresh meat.

Sandwich meat like ham I avoid now. That's true for Aldi too.

KettleWentBang · 06/03/2021 21:17

I'm not keen on much in there tbh. I like aldi more. But if I do go to lidl. I avoid their fresh chicken. Only because once i t went off within 24 hours and the smell was so bad I had to bin most stuff in my fridge. So that's Down to a bad experience rather than taste

The kids didn't like their cereal either. But will eat aldi. I even swapped the bag inside the box to see if they'd notice as didn't want to waste it.. And they did!

thenightsky · 06/03/2021 21:17

I don’t get on with Always, they irritate down below, I think because they are scented and the material they are made of is not nice.

The layer that sits next to your skin is pure plastic. Yeah, it has tiny holes in that they call 'dry weave', but it still fucking plastic!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/03/2021 21:17

Most of their wine. Some of the more expensive stuff is OK and their Prosecco is good, but the cheaper end is not very nice. It’s not the price point as Aldi’s stuff at the same price is much nicer.

thenightsky · 06/03/2021 21:19

Their Cava gives me the migraine from hell.

Mrbob · 06/03/2021 21:24

Washable sanitary towels solve the plastic and scented issue...

curlymom · 06/03/2021 21:24

Panty liners. Non existent adhesive. Put them in and hope they don’t fall out while I walk along 🙄

ManCubsMama · 06/03/2021 21:26

Surprised to see the cereals and pizzas mentioned by many PPs. We love their blueberry wheaties, Fruit & Fibre & omg they do the yummiest 2 pizzas EVER... my fave is their ham, mushroom & marscepone, 2nd fave is the Njuda sausage. So delish
