Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

  1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

  2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

I didn't think much of the frozen pizzas, but it's been a while since i had one

Ddot · 08/03/2021 06:56

Fruit and veg ok but it doesn't last long so I buy the day I'm using.

Mummadeze · 08/03/2021 07:12

I really disagree re the loo roll. I won’t buy mine anywhere else and specifically go there to get it. It lasts three times as long as loo roll from other shops.

Yogalola · 08/03/2021 07:25

Had to return cheddar cheese recently, though vacuum packed it was covered in blue mould!

fireplaceburning · 08/03/2021 07:26

@TurquoiseDragon ooh thanks I'll have a look as I've a Morrison's delivery this week

Frownette · 08/03/2021 07:26

@Branleuse yea googled and looks like them. Are you supposed to fry them..? Maybe that was the problem, they looked like normal pasta so they went in the saucepan.

Flatoutonsofa · 08/03/2021 10:01

I do most of my shopping at Lidl, but you're right, there are certain things to be avoided. The Cien body lotion is horrific. Smells awful and just doesn't rub in at all. A lot of the speciality food from different countries is dodgy. Stupidly, because I've been caught before, I bought some Black Forest ham the other week, and it's awful. Any type of clementine/satsuma is unreliable. One week they're great, the next horribly sour. I only buy the most expensive small tomatoes. The normal size tomatoes are tasteless. Oh, and the fat free natural yoghurt has a really weird taste. Other than that I like Lidl, but I generally have to get a few things from Tesco as well.

@cretelover

If I can derail the thread slightly, does anyone else find the Aldi mango chutney vile? It's the only thing I refuse to eat from there.
Agree. The mango chutney from Lidl is delicious.
TheKeatingFive · 08/03/2021 10:07

I only buy the most expensive small tomatoes.

Yes me too. They’re very good in fairness.

The small ‘snack size’ veg tend to be rubbish actually. Like the different colour tomatoes and the little cucumbers.

@icelollycraving

I never spend less in Lidl but come out with a full trolley containing normal shop, 3 crates of Prosecco, 3 saucepans and a ping pong table.
We once went in for milk and came out with a chainsaw.
NoseOfJericho · 08/03/2021 10:18

Lidl marmalade/preserve is disgusting, the orange stuff that is. Bears no resemblance to proper marmalade at all.

A lot of Lidl stuff contains some very odd ingredients and tastes bloomin' awful. It's as if it's been Jamie Oliver'd.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 08/03/2021 10:43

@ClangingChimesofDoom

Meat, always goes off the day you bring it home regardless of the use by date!
Not in my experience. Meat I have bought from Lidl has stayed fresh as long as any other meat, but is much cheaper!
Preech · 08/03/2021 10:48

There's a lot I love getting from my local Lidl. But not the coffee.

Definitelyrandom · 08/03/2021 11:02

We mix and match between Lidl, Morrisons, Aldi, plus butchers and greengrocery market stalls. Never tried the meat or fish. Have occasionally bought fruit and veg and it's been ok.

DH raves about the Lidl washing up liquid - lasts twice as long as other brands, more bubbles etc.

We like the Greek Yoghurt, apple turnovers, baked pea shoots, salami etc (the Black Forest ham is fine), the bite sized "shreddies", mineral water. Dog likes the meaty treats, the biscuits and the tinned tuna. German sausages are good. Quite a lot of the wine is excellent for the price - the Gruner Veltliner is nicer than some (but not all) GV from the Wine Society.

I like it mostly because it feels like shopping on holiday. The "country speciality" weeks often have something we would have bought/brought back with us. Last week they had spaetzle, which is the first time I'd seen it on sale in a supermarket in Britain. Bought 6 packets.

Salmon, left in the fridge fir a couple days, still had two days before it’s use by date but both me and DH had upset stomachs after eating it, and I’ve not got gastritis from it- very painful feel like someone used my stomach as a punching bag this morning. Put off for life.

24butfeeling80 · 08/03/2021 11:14

On that note though- if you haven’t tried the GI load from the fresh bakers bit of Lidl- that I’d a must. Such a lovely loaf of bread every single time!

24butfeeling80 · 08/03/2021 11:14

Loaf* 🤦🏼‍♀️

PattyPan · 08/03/2021 11:25

@TheKeatingFive I love the baby cucumbers! I could get through a couple of packs a week just to myself 🤣

Chocsmyfav · 08/03/2021 11:27

Walking round Lidl and there was a horrible smell. It didn’t click that it was coming from my trolly when I noticed the potatoes were off as I packed them into the car. My god I feel sick thinking about it. Now I always smell potatoes when I buy.

willibald · 08/03/2021 11:30

The toiletries are rank.

Darlingx · 08/03/2021 11:35

Their bagged salads are the worst for rotting quickly better buying the loose lettuce and checking the base of the lettuce brown means its been hanging around for a while!
I would never buy meat from Lidl but I buy their salmon as its a good price .
Bagged salad is actually filled with gas thats how the bag is puffed up your much better buying the lettuce as it is packaged from nature although I do like a bistro salad Smile

TurquoiseDragon · 08/03/2021 14:08

I've had zero issues with the daffodils, they've all come out great here.

longtompot · 08/03/2021 14:46

Their Formil washing powder in the big box. Didn't dissolve in the water so the clothes had bits of powder on them.
Avocados that were hard so waited until they were ripe, only for them to black inside.

Have had problems with the fish being off when opened and well before the use by date.

Their stuff is cheaper for a reason.

On the subject of smells, one Lidl we went to had a terrible smell wafting through the store. It turned out to be rotting chicken from the meat fridge. It couldn't have just happened either, so hate to think how long it had been like it.

likeamillpond · 08/03/2021 14:53

Their own brand
Sage & Onion Stuffing is way too salty.
Worcester Sauce. Also too salty.
Their knockoff Lurpak is very greasy and more like margarine than spreadable butter.
I also agree their washing powder is harsh.
