Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

  1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

  2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

Meat goes off very often on the day of purchase, despite having a few days still on the BBF date.

Perfumes smell weak and sickly.

Chocolate often very fatty and full of Palm oil.

megletsecond · 06/03/2021 20:00

Fresh fruit and veg. Blink and it'll go manky.

Their own brand weetabix. One of very few things that eating machine DS won't eat.

Notabove25 · 06/03/2021 20:00

@Baconking

Fresh fruit & veg....it always goes off quickly.

The last time my DH bought a bag of potatoes in there we had to throw the whole lot away as they were manky and rotten

It always was a problem in Lidl but I think they've been a lot better for the last few years. At least fruit is nearing an edible level of ripeness, unlike most supermarkets.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 06/03/2021 20:01

Avocadoes.

Also their delicious potato salad. The tub is too big and it never gets eaten.

Notabove25 · 06/03/2021 20:05

It bothers me what the other supermarkets do to their produce to make it last so long. Fresh fruit and veg isn't supposed to last for weeks.

Apples. Always bruised, no matter how much I scrutinise. Toilet cleaner is ridiculously thin.

I'm actually quite happy with their sanitary towels, tampons and purple packs of loo roll.

icelollycraving · 06/03/2021 20:10

Fresh fruit, veg & salad, not all of it but it is hit and miss. The pizzas look grim but Ds will have them if no pizza express ones in the fridge.
Dishwasher salt was huge crystals.
Most things don’t make it to the sell by date I find.
There are lots of things I love there though.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 06/03/2021 20:12

Agree about the tortillas they must glue them together and never had the same issue with other supermarkets.

Grapes furry after less than a day also low stock levels in general can't even buy cumin and for ages couldn't get an all in one salt grinder.

Doublechins · 06/03/2021 20:12

Agree with the meat, wraps and avocados also the biscuits that are trying to be Oreos but just aren't.

PutTheBathOnPlease · 06/03/2021 20:12

Horrible place, and you can never get everything you want so end up going somewhere else as well. I stick to Sainsbury’s now, rarely disappoints. Yes I am a shopping snob - judge me 😜

KirstenBlest · 06/03/2021 20:14

I like the wine and the fresh fruit and veg - It doesn't keep as long as some supermarkets but I eat it fairly quickly anyway.
I usually buy hummus and eggs.
The ice creams are delicious and not too pricy (but check out Iceland). The Q10 serum is really nice, and I like the salt your own crisps.
Last time I went to Lidl I treated myself to a bar of chocolate and it was good.

I prefer Aldi, but there's no Aldi near me.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 06/03/2021 20:15

100% agree with the tortilla wraps, maybe get one useable one out of the entire pack.

The baby wipes are dreadful! Thin, dry, very plasticy. I need to use about 5 wipes just to clean DSs hands after lunch, I wouldn't even reach for them in a poonami situation!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/03/2021 20:16

Formil soap powder clumps in my drawer. Ds doesn't like the pizzas. I'm happy with everything else. 🤔

@ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave

Bodyform seem to be the only decent ones around at the minute, although I did get a free pack of Lil-Lets at the chemist and they’re ok. Didn’t even know Lil-ets made sanitary towels up until then. Always are horrible. There’s such a gap in the market for consistently nice ones which are available in most shops.
Agree totally with this. Bodyform are getting harder and harder to find in the shops though. Always have taken over.

This is main reason I now order flex soft discs from America, as most tampons and pads are poorly made
Frubecube · 06/03/2021 20:18

I've always found their fruit and veg goes off really quickly, so I tend to only buy veg if we will be using it within a day and don't bother with fruit. Overall though I don't get the hype other than 'its cheap', but it seems other supermarkets are price matching on a lot of things. I think I'm in the minority though as everyone seems to love it.

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2021 20:20

Any of their own brand laundry detergent or cleaning stuff.
Fruit

Kotatsu · 06/03/2021 20:22

post kids my period seems to be so heavy that one day I bought the incontinence pads instead, and haven't looked back since - no stupid wings which stick to me, absorbant without being plasticy, and unscented, yet absorb any smell very well. They are quite fat, but then I need the absorbancy so I don't mind that.

Aldi steak is better that Lidl (the kids agree - Lidl is too gristly). Fruit is extremely variable, but the veg is fine, I buy the luxury toilet rolls, otherwise the roll itself is slightly too short to fit properly on my toilet roll holder and keeps falling out.

underneaththeash · 06/03/2021 20:22

I don't get the love with either Lidl or Aldi? They're just like Kwik Save, unless you really have no money and are time rich, why would you want to walk round somewhere horrible, with only half the items you need to buy, to then have to queue for ages to get to a check out with an unpleasant individual who won't let you pack.

Kotatsu · 06/03/2021 20:22

Oh! Stock cubes. They just don't seem to do anything.

cretelover · 06/03/2021 20:24

If I can derail the thread slightly, does anyone else find the Aldi mango chutney vile? It's the only thing I refuse to eat from there.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 06/03/2021 20:25

Yes @megletsecond. Definitely agree about their own version of Weetabix, they’re like cardboard.

Our new Aldi is lovely. Wide aisles, lots of stock, plentiful self service checkouts (plus a couple of tills) and lots of friendly staff around to help.
