Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

  1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

  2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

They looked a bit less closed today from Aldi so i bought a bunch.lol

O ive remembered other good Aldi items Their facial primer is fab as good as many cosmetic ranges and their eyeshadow pallettes are a dead ringer for urban decay and as good..And wine is good better than Lidl, always a good choice.

I started using Aldi again as they do click and collect but I’ve noticed the quality has suddenly taken a nosedive. Their big lasagnes which used to be good for a lazy midweek meal have now become chemically slop. Most of the meat has been shit or smelled dodgy before the best before date so has been chucked out. Fruit and veg has also gone mouldy before having a chance to eat it.

Their tinned and long life stuff, pizzas and bakery have all been good. Plus great chocolate selection. But it seems anything fresh is just crap. Back to Sainsbury’s I guess.

Avoid the kitchen roll (too soft and flimsy) and their Greek yoghurt (thinner than skimmed milk and tasteless).😡

Good buys I've had from there are swing bin liners (very strong/excellent value), washing up liquid, antibacterial spray and sparkling mineral water.😁😁

bemusedmoose · 08/03/2021 18:58

I love a lot of lidl things (food, nappies, plants, dishwasher tabs, ground coffee, the different foods from other countries and the middle isles have lots of goodies) but things i will now never buy -

loo roll! the rolls look the same BUT they make the middle smaller and the paper is looser on the roll so you are actually getting far less paper per roll - it actually makes them more expensive to buy than a basic shop version.

Family lasagne - absolutely horrible, even dustbin son left it. Tastes awful, mushy yet full of gristle. Once was too much. I have an iron stomach yet felt like gagging.

Toilet cleaner is rubbish.

Shower gel seems to suck the moisture out of your skin like sea water! Left the whole house itchy and dry.

Tampons couldnt be more useless. Couldnt stop a paper cut.

Pet food - both cat and dog food has such high sugar and cereal levels it is next to useless. They bulk it out with maize as a cheap way to bulk out and up protein but it is un-digestable. The sugar is damaging to pets health and not required at all in their diet. It's cheap but it's the same as feeding your kids cornflakes for every meal for their whole lives. You will spend more in vet bills buying cheap food than you will feeding good food.

@mynameiscalypso

I think this is a problem in general with sanitary towels. I didn't have periods for about 18 months due to fertility treatment / pregnancy and when I started them again, I found that all sanitary towels are useless. I'd been using them for 20 years without issue and now they're all just crap.
I agree. I don't think you can beat Bodyform tbh but even those aren't foolproof. Cheap own-brands are just rubbish and don't do the job.
kennycat · 08/03/2021 20:07

You lot sound dead fussy! All supermarkets have dodgy things and it's rare i can get everything I need whichever shop I go to. How can you not love the bakery section? Huge pretzels, brilliant baguettes and those pizza things. Yum Yum Yum!

TheNationsFavourite · 09/03/2021 08:56

Frownette

A PP was saying they do sour cherries...?That would be like heaven

Currently on promotion for their Italian week - get down there fast!!

Harmonypuss · 09/03/2021 13:14

@Mummadeze .... how does toilet paper last 3 times as long as any other?

Are you using it, washing, re-using, washing, re-using and only then flushing it?
Here's me thinking using a teabag twice is a bit rank, using toilet paper 3 times 🤢🤮

100% agree with this.

Interesting to hear everyone else’s hits and misses!
Just had some Kefir yoghurt for lunch from Lidl and I said to DD ‘I’m never buying that again!’
Don’t really know if that’s what it’s supposed to taste like as haven’t bought it from anywhere else but it wasn’t very nice either way.

Harmonypuss the rolls are much thicker. Ie you get a lot more for your money. A normal roll lasts us about a day. These last about three days. And we are a family who use a lot of loo roll for various reasons including allergies.

And the cookies esp if you grab one whilst warm...omg heaven!

Ddot · 09/03/2021 17:41

Love the low gi bread and unsalted butter, Gin good too. You just have to check fruit and veg for freshness. Oh just remembered fishcakes are yum

MsTSwift · 09/03/2021 18:16

Frozen fish. Defrosted and cooked. It’s going to the cats. It’s not right 🤮

Ddot · 09/03/2021 19:50

Frozen garlic bread, shape of pizza, smells of petrol. Can't remember if it was lidl or aldi

Inwiththenew · 09/03/2021 20:11

Packaged meat (pork) after finding worms in it 🤮

MsAlva · 09/03/2021 20:11

Also, I wanted to add that there's nothing wrong in being a food snob. At the end of the day food should be your priority. I'm amazed that some people spend hundreds on cheap branded stuff (majority made in China), but can't justify spending a lot on good quality, healthy, local and organic food.

ihaveallergies · 09/03/2021 20:12

How can you not love the bakery section?

I have heard good things to be fair, but I’m put off trying their bakery. Every time I visit Lidl, flies are alllll over the bakery goods. The section is situated near the entrance, the food is uncovered and unpackaged. So there’s definitely been insects crawling all over your food, but god knows what the invisible “additions” to your food are. Not very COVID-secure, is it?

DrCoconut · 09/03/2021 22:08

I go to Lidl for their own brand Pringles which are gluten free. Much cheaper than schar (big gluten free brand) crisps and ok quality. I can also get some acceptable freezer meals and gluten free cookies there. I also love their own brand San Pellegrino (sp?) water for occasional use. I don't buy loads of bottled water though.

ALongHardWinter · 09/03/2021 22:18

Fruit and veg. For some reason,it deteriorates really quickly.

CrayonInThreeBits · 10/03/2021 14:14

DrCoconut I know right, Schär want two pound bloody fifty for theirs!

VeraGriffin · 07/04/2021 13:11

I regularly shop at Lidl and I particularly like their:

  • packets of unsalted pistachios, walnuts, cashews etc
  • deluxe small tomatoes
  • low GI bread loaf (I've not seen flies around the bakery section at ours)
  • own brand Ryvita type crackers
  • pomelos and pomegranates, when they've got them

I tried their pretzels and brownies this weekend after reading recommendations for them in this thread.

The pretzels were chewy but I found them salty (salty to the point of being inedible, was my first impression). Appreciate that this is a subjective thing. I wouldn't buy again but it was fun to take them along on our picnic to try.

The brownie was so inexpensive compared to the ones sold at our local cake stall and contained large chunks of chocolate, but the quality of the brownie overall was not a patch on our local cake stall's. Lidl's brownie had visible grains of sugar (demerara or similar to demerara) and wasn't as chocolate-y in taste. Overall the brownie was an inexpensive treat, but do manage your expectations!
