Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

 1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

 2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

The problem is that Lidl doesn’t have everything you need for a full week’s shop. Making a veg tagine and want harrissa? No luck. Ditto many other ingredients.

I have tried to cut down on the number of shops I enter during the pandemic, so going to Lidl for their things I do like and find very good value, has become less frequent. Plus their aisles are narrower and SD harder.

Tesco Clubcard prices have upped the price war ante anyway.

Lidls price on Linda McC veg sausages is always cheaper, I buy their 59p unscented deodorant, their fake HobNobs and various crackers are good, love Greek Week.

HiPieInTheSky · 07/03/2021 10:04

Another one who does not buy their fruit, like everyone else it goes off to quickly, even the lemons shrivel and die very quickly.

Dont mind most of the veg though, but I bought celery in Sainsburys as Lidl had none, and the taste was completely different, Sainsburys was so much nicer for about 7p more.

One thing they do have though is some cracking wines, not the £3.99 efforts but the more expensive ones, which regularly feature in papers and magazines as recommendations.

And I do like the fact I have had quite a few £10 off my shopping with using the Lidl plus.

Popcornbetty · 07/03/2021 10:07

@mynameiscalypso have you tried Asda's own brand? They were a revelation for me and i wish id discovered them years ago instead of always which are rubbish!

NoseOfJericho · 07/03/2021 10:55

It's only value for money if you don't end up having to bin rotting meat and fish and mouldy veg, and try to force people to eat the stuff that tastes foul. Lidl branches vary and ours is pretty bad. Yes I have been to more than one.

I am not a snob, I just don't see the point in buying stuff that is below standard if it isn't going to be used. Lidl is not so cheap any more and the quality isn't that great. A few things are good, cottage cheese, yogurt, can't think of much else, but they are no cheaper than anywhere else, so shopping in Morrisons is just as good and less wasteful.

I have had more rotten stuff from out Lidl than anywhere else put together. Even my partner who used to love Lidl agrees that we have bought some shit from there in the last few months when it has been manky in a couple of days, so we have only been buying things that don't go off.

It really isn't worth the bother for us.

Funny you should say that, my parents, who have been shopping there for years and years , who would literally lick the floor and tell you it's the best they ever tested if it comes from lidl/aldi and seem strangely obsessed with trying to get me to shop there, seem to be spending more time in.morrisons of late....

Branleuse · 07/03/2021 11:14

I dont buy beans but thats interesting.
Aldi coffee i find much better than lidl. Aldi Java coffee is excellent. Smooth and really well rounded.

Aalvarino · 07/03/2021 11:37

Can't understand people saying it isn't cheaper than the big 4..it really, really is, unless maybe you go round only putting branded things in your trolley. Typically I spend 1/3 less in Lidl/Aldi than in Tesco, Sainsbury, or morrisons. Doing the same shop in Waitrose would be nearly double.

Re the coffee, both Lidl and Aldi own brand Nespresso pods are great and 10p cheaper per cap than Tesco/ sains. Asda's are ok and also cheap. I get through 4-6 per day so it adds up over the course of a month.

If I store fruit and veg in the fridge (not potatoes or tomatoes) has always lasted fine.

Lidl steak (particularly their salt and pepper steak joint) is my favourite. Not like that weird all-red stuff you get from Tesco. Good streak should be slightly marbled.

devildeepbluesea · 07/03/2021 11:45

I must be very undiscerning, I've never had a problem with anything from Lidl.

Fresh fruit is actually edible, as opposed to being like a bullet for days. I shop twice a week because, you know, perishable stuff.

The meat has always been great. Steaks better than the butcher - the deluxe stuff anyway.

No issue with sanpro, shower gel, washing stuff. All great.

Wine - provided you go for the Wine Route stuff, and a few carefully identified ones from the main shelf - absolutely delicious. But there is a bit of dross there I wouldn't touch.

icelollycraving · 07/03/2021 14:01

I never spend less in Lidl but come out with a full trolley containing normal shop, 3 crates of Prosecco, 3 saucepans and a ping pong table.

Scarriff · 07/03/2021 18:39

Their chocolate is ace. Large wholenut bars. Buy several when you are there. Not much else and they are hopeless about social distancing/mask wearing.

Ilovewatermelon · 07/03/2021 18:44

Fruit!! Always turns mouldy too quick!!

Ilovewatermelon · 07/03/2021 18:44

But there brownies and yum tums are to die for!!

Kellymumto2 · 07/03/2021 18:45

I don’t buy anything at all in Lidl anymore. Aldi all the way for me. I think aldi quality is better and prices are lower and I never have an issue with aldi fruit and veg. My partner doesn’t have aldi where he lives and he uses Lidl all the time and loves it so maybe it’s a regional thing.

Mrssheppard18 · 07/03/2021 18:45

Not quite the topic but always sensitive are brilliant and cheap, 95p a pack in most places. After lots of lady problems these are the only ones that have never let me down. I do love Lidl but some of their cheeses don’t melt properly which is annoying if you’re doing cheese on toast or anything really that involves melted cheese. Also they’re flavoured microwave rices are awful, the plain ones fine but the flavoured ones are bad

Mrssheppard18 · 07/03/2021 18:46

Omg the brownies are to die for 🤤

Mrssheppard18 · 07/03/2021 18:48

@Ilovewatermelon the brownies are my absolute favourites

cherish123 · 07/03/2021 19:02

I tried to shop there but the quality was so bad. The roasts were same price as Sainsbury's.

karen2402 · 07/03/2021 19:08

I love Lidl but really don't rate their toiletries at all and their fabric softener i find never really smells as strong as comfort or lenor. X

LentilShanklet · 07/03/2021 19:23

Their instant coffee (Bellarom?) is absolute shite.

Everything else for me is basically fine. But seriously Lidl, if you're listening, sort your coffee out.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 19:29

their fabric softener i find never really smells as strong as comfort or lenor.

Sounds like a bonus to me!

angela99999 · 07/03/2021 19:33

@Baconking

Fresh fruit & veg....it always goes off quickly.

The last time my DH bought a bag of potatoes in there we had to throw the whole lot away as they were manky and rotten

I'm surprised to hear this, I've never had a problem except some dry satsumas which can happen anywhere. I tried the frozen lobster though and it was horrible, dry, spongy and tasteless.
Thewithesarehere · 07/03/2021 19:34

YABU for just the tortilla wraps! I have never had that problem and their wraps are divine when fried in salted butter!

TurquoiseDragon · 07/03/2021 19:41
@Harrykanesrightsock I agree, I'm wondering if that's why in some stores the meat doesn't keep either.

I like our lidl but don't use ready made sauces so can usually get everything I need for a week. Haven't been in ages as I'm doing online at the moment but need to go as am missing their lazy garlic which at 89p is a bargain!
My local Morrisons hs now started stocking their own brand of chopped/crushed garlic (and ginger) in jars for about 80p.

Purplealienpuke · 07/03/2021 19:43

@thenightsky Tesco sell bodyform, with and without wings.
Only ones I can use, they don't seem to be perfumed

TurquoiseDragon · 07/03/2021 19:43

The only stuff I buy from Lidl::

Instant Lemon tea
Pomelo (because a lot of places don't stock them)
Bockwurst

Otherwise I use a mix of Aldi and Morrisons.
