Things I’m never buying from Lidl again....

I like Lidl a lot. I like that there’s little choice of brands which stops me dithering. I like that there’s only about 5 aisles so it’s quick but there’s definitely things I’ll never buy again.

  1. tortilla wraps. They stick together in the pack and tear when you try and separate them.

  2. and the main reason for this thread. The sanitary towels! Awful, so awful for many reasons and I’ve only been using them for today. Never again.

Anything else I need to swerve??

The lovely till assistant noticed that my bagels had been chewed by what could only be rats 😮😮. The store is by a river. He buzzed the manager who came over and could not have given less of a shit. It was like a comedy sketch! The lovely young keen checkout lad was outraged the manager literally shrugged. Put me off rather.

The melting chocolate cottage. We don’t shop in Lidl (Aldi is nearer) but I sent DH especially to get the cottage I saw advertised at Christmas. Nice idea but thick, bitter dark chocolate filled with over sweet mousse, caramel and the chocolate sauce your pour down the chimney. Most of it went in the bin.

Love Lidl and Aldi, there does seem to be alot of supermarket snobs on here!!

I prefer Aldi as their bread is better imo,not the fresh bakery stuff, Lidl wins on that, but our Aldi store is much nicer.

Never had a problem with their fruit or veg. Their fancy chocolate is great, their cheap stuff is passable.

Aldis extra special macaroni cheese is gorgeous, like Charlie Bingham, but without the wanky wooden box!

It's only cheap though if you don't have to rebuy everything as it's gone off/tastes grim. I like the concept of Aldi and Lidl and some stuff is fine, but I wouldn't say I was a snob for wanting food that tastes nice, or is at least edible in the case of their fruit and veg after a day!

singsingbluesilver · 07/03/2021 08:07

A lot of these comments are snobbery - and some from people who almost certainly don't shop there. Heinz beans and ketchup is sold in Lidl along with own brands.

The veg is ours is mostly good - the odd time there has been an issue with the odd potato or sweet pepper in a pack - but I have had this from Tesco too. Can't see the issue with bananas - they are always good. As are caulis, cabbage and sweet potatoes.

The Scottish beefburgers are the best I have found. Steaks are hot and miss - had some lovely pieces this week, bur again I find that it can also be tough from other supermarkets. The pork joints are lovely. I don't like the gammon. The cheese is good - especially goats cheese. Milk is milk - just cheaper here.

Pepsi max is cheaper here - though rarely in stock lately. That can be over 50p per bottle dearer in other supermarkets. The butter cookies are lovely.

Woolysock · 07/03/2021 08:32

Smooth peanut butter for me, it was really sweet.

Boiledeggandtoast · 07/03/2021 08:33

I agree that some of their fruit and veg is a bit hit and miss and their fresh tomatoes are tasteless, but I'm amazed at the criticism of Lidl chocolate and coffee. Their Madagascar dark chocolate is fantastic (and does NOT contain palm oil), as is their Deluxe Colombian coffee in the blue bag. Their organic eggs are good and much cheaper than Sainsbury's and I have never had a problem with their free-range chickens.

eatsleepread · 07/03/2021 08:43

Their own brand Hula Hoops crisps are no good. They taste only of oil.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 09:14

What becuase we don't actually like it we can't have shopped there Confused

I dont like tesco much either.

If you are secure in your choice of supermarket and happy with the stuff then why does it matter if others don't rate it.

I'm.not gonna keep buying shit to make strangers happy Confused

Sparklingbrook · 07/03/2021 09:16

It’s not snobbery if you think some of the stuff Lidl sells is horrible. Confused

SenecaTrewe · 07/03/2021 09:22

Their razors scratched DH to shreds!

I love their skincare stuff though.

singsingbluesilver · 07/03/2021 09:23

If somone claims not to like it because they can't get Heinz there then they 100% have not shopped there - they stock heinz.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 09:27

They don't stock any thing on a consistent basis. That was one of the reasons we ended up having to give up shopping in lidl aldi a few years back. Stuff just disappeared or was forever out of stock and over time the list of stuff we were having to go elsewhere for just kept growing.

singsingbluesilver · 07/03/2021 09:27

And I don't care where anyone shops - each to their own. But to claim that there is next to nothing worth buying in Lidl is incorrect. I don't work for them. I don't care if you go there or not. But I recognise that some of what they sell is good, and some bad. I also recognise that they are considerably cheaper than Waitrose and M and S and a fair bit cheaper than Tesco and Sainsburys. In terms of value for money Lidl is hard to beat. And for some people saving money on their shop isn't just nice - it's essential.

They is a lot of snobbery about Lidl and Aldi - to dismiss all of the food ranges without trying them p yes that's food snobbery.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 09:28

What makes you think they haven't tried them?

singsingbluesilver · 07/03/2021 09:30

I think it highly unlikely they have tried ALL of the food in Lidl. I certainly haven't!

Frubecube · 07/03/2021 09:31

I agree, it's almost the reverse of snobbery (and just as nauseating) to assume any criticism is because someone is up their own arse, rather than they just don't like it.
Sparklingbrook · 07/03/2021 09:31

If Lidl and Aldi had Scan as you Shop I might be tempted in. But they don’t sell everything I like so I’d still need to go elsewhere.

I notice Aldi are now doing click and collect for 4.99 so progress is being made.

Frubecube · 07/03/2021 09:32

Surely people have only tried the stuff that they buy. You dont have to have bought all of the range to form an opinion, surely.
SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 09:34

I've never had Aldi fruit or veg go off more quickly than Sainsbury's or Waitrose.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 09:36

How many chances are you supposed to give them then? Are you just assuming those who dont shop in lidl automatically have money to keep going back and binning their shopping until one day hopefully they find something?

singsingbluesilver · 07/03/2021 09:38

Absolutely you can have opinion based on trying some of the food - I have.

My comments were directed at people who say Lidl is rubbish with little or no experience actually going there. The pp who bemoaned that they cannot buy branded goods there for example - this is simply untrue.

I do my main shop there because it's cheaper and I like a lot of their stuff. I also top up elsewhere for things I don't like there so much, or that they don't sell.

I don't care where people shop - it's their choice. But I do get fed up at people who write off Lidl stuff as all being poor quality, tasteless etc. It really isn't all like that.

Pyewackect · 07/03/2021 09:39

I avoid the place. The quality of their meat and veg is iffy. They never have the same stuff on the shelve the following week and queuing at a till went out with the Ark. Sometimes its worth paying the extra.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/03/2021 09:44

Maybe others get fed up of being accused of being snobs becuase they dislike stuff. We had a new one built I thought I'd give a chance because was new..first day I went there was mouldy fruit on the shelf.

I dont like the meat in tesco either. Its as bad as the stuff in lidl and aldi taste wise only difference is its not green in tesco. But we seem to be able to say other places aren't much good.

Saving a few quid is no good if no ones eating what you have bought. I dont even tell my kids when I've been shopping either they just get given stuff.

the80sweregreat · 07/03/2021 09:46

I couldn't use a lot of their toiletries or washing powder because of allergies but their bread , meat, wine and snacks are all ok.
I tend to shop everywhere for different reasons and products. Morrison's or Tesco are my favorite and also Sainsbury for the self scanner machine which work well and save me time at the check outs. I'm lucky I live within a five mile radius of every supermarket or shop known to man though so mix it up!
